Even about 10 years ago it was pretty easy to find information about people. e.g. Person makes contact via Yahoo Pager using his own name. We figure out the IP, so we know he is from a University. Search on the website and we have a phone number. We call him. All this within 5 minutes. I am sure he did not choose to put his name and phone number on the website.

A lot of information is out there that you did not put out there or were not even sure that existed and people here on /. are not the average user. You neighbors grand parents and uncles are. And those are the people that get shafted by all this.

That is also the reason why I and many others do not use their real name. However many people do not have the knowledge to make that decision. On the Internet nobody is paranoia, because your ARE being followed.

Otherwise they would not told us to copy the books. The first thing I always did was making a copy of the page that the copyright was on. When shown to others, they did not understand the irony. How do you know if a URL will produce a 301 error? Because that is what they do. So all you should be able to do is get a message of where a redirect is send to and ask permission to do so. Or in case of TinyURL enable the preview.

  11. Re:*shrug* on Why Twitter's T.co Is a Game Changer · · Score: 1

I never click on a shortened link. You never know when it migh be a redirect to goatse.cx or worse.

That is why TinyURL has a previeuw you can enable: http://tinyurl.com/preview.php (Not a shortend link)
Advantage is that the originator has no influence on it. Disadvantage is that it is needed for each and every different redirector.

A way around is is to edit how the 301 error is handled. Instead of directly going to the new page, first show where it is going. This should be done by the browser. Even better would be to have a seperate and new 'error' message for this.
    e.g. 308 "Redirected on purpose"
Similar to 301, but specific for forwarders for the purpose of URL shortening. You could even easily implement that on your own site.

I looked for a plugin for Firefox that could change the behaviour of error 301 to show where it was forwarding to, but was unable to find anything.

Co-pilots are there to handle things in case the pilot gets sick or something.

So how often does that happen? One could argue for the same reason that a second co-pilot would be good, in case something happens with both of them.

The chance of a need for that will be extremely limited. So how high are the chances for the actual need of a co-pilot? Are numbers available? Real numbers, not incidental evidence. And are there situations where having two pilots caused issues? Just to be sure to have no false positives and false negatives.

And the next is the question if we are willing to take the chances. Each day I get into the car, I take the chance that somebody kills me or I kill somebody and yet I do it.

I understand emotionally the reason for a second pilot as much as I understand the reason for redundancy in computers. It would be great if it would be confirmed with actual numbers. I also understand that it is not so much about lowering the prices, but either raising the profits and/or being in the news again.
