The whole "make an argument look stupid by changing a couple of the words" thing would work better if you weren't wrong.

It is that I was there myself that I heard these exact words as to why the CD would not catch on. The fact that the arguments were wrong does not change the fact that they were used.

Hell, I even remember arguments as to why the Walkman would never catch on. It was because nobody was so rude as to shut themselves off of the rest of the world. Or why nobody would need a cellphone. Oh and obviously nobody would need a phone where you can see each other. Quadrophonie replacing stereo? Never.

Just like you now are saying that there is no reason, other people have said it of similar products. It could be that you are right, it could be that you are wrong. Only the future will tell and only then can we be certain why something has failed or not. But the arguments that are used have not changed. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. Could be that the reason it fails is because people think it has something to do with bluetooth and they don't want a dvd player for their mobile phone.

Could be that suddenly there is a movie that comes out and for some reasone everybody want to see it on the new device.

Sounds to me as if there were other reasons and they just used those as an excuse. Pretty lame excuses I will give you that, but most likely they did not wake up and thought "Let's pick a name and fire that person."

I have fired people myself where the final straw might have been pretty lame, but it was a final straw after several warnings.

That said, your point was to never leave people without unemployment benefits. In Belgium (and the rest of Europe) that is a pretty hard thing to do.
I can fire you for no reason at all. You will get your 3 months pay and after that you can get your unemployment benefit if you still don't have a job.

If you do something like stealing or are absent for no reason or some other things, you will get fired on the spot without any benefits. Strict laws and not an easy step to take.

Why would we buy a CD? We have music cassettes players in our cars, we have hand-held cassette players for $99. We have cassette players/recorders in our computers. A cassette is the media we can use where we want to use it.

CDs are expensive, need an expensive player, and can't be used with all our devices.

The only "advantage" beyond new and shiny bling appeal for techy nerds, is dubiously better picture quality on an CD for new music releases.

It isn't good enough to be worth it.

(And yes, I am old enough to have heard the argument and even participated in it. Now get of my lawn)

The main reason that the discussions are of a higher level is that accessing them needs more effort.
e.g. a person has to first know it exists, then needs to configure (perhaps even download) a newsreader and know what goes where.

This means that people who have absolutely no knowledge of the medium will seldom get to Usenet. It is a minority who uses it and those are also the people who have some internet experience.

Seldom have I seen people posting that did not know what it was. That is until some 'forums' started to host Usenet and made the access easy.

Each and every webforum that has an NNTP interface sucks for either one or the other.

There are plenty of free usenet servers for text groups (and free IPv6 for binaries) that there is no need to use a webinterface. And if you boss does not want you to use Usenet, then do without it. His loss, not yours if he doesn't give you the tools to work with.

Voting by fax should be illegal as your vote can be traced back to you.

Voting by mail is ok, as long as you put the ballot in a sealed blank envelope and at the other side people check if the envelope is really blank and closed.

I have done some sit ins in Belgium and votes by mail were opened one at a time. And checked against a list, so that only one vote would be done for that person. If the envelope was not closed or if there were clear recognizable marks on it (somebody even put his name on the envelope) the envelope is destroyed without opening and the vote is not counted.

All the blank envelopes where then placed in one place and then first opened one by one, to see if there were no two ballots in it. Once that was done, the ballots were divided by party and counted.

This all under the watching eye of people who were of said party, but were NOT allowed to tough the ballots. Even with this paper, there was a LOT of overlapping control and about 4 to 5 times more people involved as would actually be needed.

And still that is something I trust more then a machine that counts all that in 2 minutes, instead of us doing it in 6 hours.
