  2. Re:I like version numbers that tell me something on Linus on Kernel Version Numbering · · Score: 1

There are many things that use numbering that does not follow the idea of a huge difference between 1.x and 2.x. openSUSE is such a product. There you have SUSE (SLES and SLED) that go 9, 10, 11. openSUSE somewhat follows this numbering. Theversion before is e.g. 11.0, the numbering after it is 11.1.

These numbers have no other meaning then marketing.

So perhaps it is like this with the kernel. It is not something that is so with everything.

Even when the language that their parents speak have different word orders. There's some hard-coded syntax for at least gestural language.

That might be, but how much is the influence of the people who DO speak and hear and interact with these deaf children?

Yes, I use NVidia drivers that are closed source. Yes I have Opera running. Yes I have other software that I payed for.
I use openSUSE and there I can select between an OSS and a Non-OSS. That way I can decide myself wether I want it pure or not.

The reason they did it was because some people were moaning about Non-OSS software in the distribution and that that wa s what holding SUSE (now openSUSE) back, so they changed it.

And that is were the choice should be. With the user, not with the distribution, not with some freak with a beard.

To me it is about choice and if I have a duistribution that does not give me that choice (I do not know if they exist) that that is NOT a good thing.

          2. We succeeded without the distributions doing a cavity search
          3. A11 y0ur L1nux are b3l0ng t0 us!

openSUSE does the following. You are asked to be added as a mirror and they add you. However YaST (or better zypper) will point to http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/ by default which will then point you to the mirror.
Then they also look if you have the latest version available or not. If not, they will not point to you untill you do.
The reason is that this way they can spread the traffic among the mirrors, so that not everybody is using the same mirror, making the idea of mirrors obsolete. They also test if the mirror is up.

So there is already a big barrier to overcome. Obviously you could still make your own repository like Packman or http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.0 and then see that people point there. This will need some social enginering and can be done, just as you can convice people to type in a code for a ziptfile, unpack it and then run the file inside as admin.

I hate it when I call people and do an explanation and at the end of it say "I will have to call you back. I am in a meeting." That is rude to me and rude to the people in the meeting. Put some key people (your boss, your wife, your parrents) in a specific meeting group and all the rest on silent when in a meeting.

I have had people in my team call me and I, not so nicely, explained that they knew I was in a meeting and NOT call me. They were a bit pissed of and said they would solve the problem themselves. RESULT! They started to actualy think instead of calling me for each and every issue.

No, I do not feel importand when I get a lot of calls. I feel importand when I can show good results with a team that thinks for themselves and can take decisions when I am not around.

Organise work so that people CAN work when you are not there. If your procedure tells you, you must contact person X, change the procedure. If you are the only person who can do something, then you need to find a way of how other people can do it who ARE working.
