I think the reason Google is allowing news story comments is to gain content they own and can advertise against. Until now they didn't own the news content and had no way of monetizing it.
The CPAN modules available make writing a complex script possible on a short deadline. Try, in an afternoon, with PHP, to write a script to read from an email box to get an excel attachment whose contents you use to create a midi file.
(Perl is also useful for parsing posts like this.)
I have the same feelings about Google. Google is remarkably powerful. I've been blindly using their free beta software and have let all sorts of information about myself, my data and my interconnections be harvested. I worry that the Google rug is about to be pulled out from under me.
I should start finding other options to cover my bases. Diversify.
I use PHP on the front end and call Perl and C programs when necessary. The results of the Perl and C programs are then rendered to the screen with PHP.
I've had problems with the scalability of some of my back end stuff that was written in Perl. Some image processing modules had to be rewritten in C for speed.
It was funny because someone was standing over my shoulder and I was treating it like the comptuer on Star Trek, saying "Computer, who is the governor of Massachusetts" as I typed in the query.
I bought a flat panel monitor from Dell.com this weekend. The difference in price seems to reflect a difference in shipping. I paid a little more for the monitor, but got free shipping.
It is a particularly bad idea to suddenly apply the brakes if the road is icy. Or if you are in the middle of a turn. Or if you are merging onto a highway.
