Strange - I like vim for the very same reason. In Vim it's the different modes which make the different keyboards. And more so then in vanilla Vi because Vim supports more key combinations and more modes. See:
You are right about "Joe Average" but big "Big Corporation" buy "Corporation Edition" windows.
They buy them bulk on so called "Golden CD's" which are quite cool because each installation has the same registration number and do not need to be "activated":-).
Don't you know that all banks in all developed countries have a central register for "bad" customers?
If HBCS has frozen the account and ask to terminate relationsship they will have him put on the black list as well - it's standart procedure.
And getting off that list - even when innocent - is not easy. And finding a new bank when you are on the list is more then difficult. Only banks with nasty conditions/interest rates will then take you.
Realy you should qualify for compensation in such a case - but you are not of corse. You probably won't even get a "We are sorry" letter.
If they wanted that they would have done so. The project owners know about Wikibooks - in fact there first book is hosted at Wikibooks. They just plainly don't want to or they belive there own project is better.
"The closer to the metal you can get while programming, the faster your program will compile -- or so conventional wisdom would have you believe"
Well actually I can disaggree here - Because for C there is the issue of
#include
Includes need to be read and parsed over again and over again. Most other compiled high level languages use modules or packages where the specification is read and parsed once. (On top of that they can determine the compilations order and package dependencies theself - almost no need for make)
Ohh shure, some clever C compiler builder thought of copy cating that feature and called it "precompiled header file". Only they don't work because of:
#if defined(....) #endif
I the programm becomes complex enough then other high level languages start to outperform C in terms of turn around (edit - compile - debug - edit) speed. Apart from beeing more high level and therefore beeing easier to understant by humans.
Martin
PS: all that is even more true for C++ and it magic STL.
Well Wikipedia has it's own police and it works well enough to get most of the bad guys.
But - even been a Wikipedia supported and admin on Wikibooks - one thing that is a dagner to Wikipedia are indeed the SPAMers - or PR-Guys as you call them. They destroyed free E-Mail transfer (I can't send any E-Mail directly to the intedend destination any more because I have a dynamic IP address), made watching so called "Free-TV" a pain (Who ever had the idea of pop-up-advers for TV) and are in the progress of destroying free web service as well (I deinstalled Macromedia Flash to get rit of the most anoing adverts).
"and it really is something MS can be proud of if they pull it off"
Why! Microsoft only has caught on. The only thing they can be proud if is there marketing department selling us stuff "cool and new" which the competition had for 10 years.
Well, last time I was in Karstadt Computer Department I saw PowerPC MacOS Shrinkwraps there for anybody to buy.
But you are right: The x86 MacOS is too new to stand there as well. But I guess it is just a matter of time. Unless Apple doesn't want to make any more money from the upgrade market.
Sorry I am only a German - can't figure out the finer line of your post.
But what I do know is that it took M$ quite a while to fully support AMD64 with there Windows 64 or what they call it.
In fact: My Father deleted Win x86_64 from his mashine again and had Win x86 reinstalled because the x86_64 version still does not work properly - not they way a 60+ gameholic (I should have never lended him my Atari ST so many years ago) would like it to work.
Interesting twist: At the same time I prepare the reformat my Linux x86 partitions because Linux x86_64 is now fully usable and I don't need 32 bit support any more.
But still: What did you actualy wanted to tell me...
If I go into my local shop, buy a MaxOS X DVD then why exactly should I not be allowed to install I own where I like? I mean I just bought it - it's mine.
It is not the fist time. Back in the 16 bit times you could install MacOS (V.3 ??) on Atari computers. And if you owned an set of original Apple ROM there was nothing Apple could do. They whined but they could not do a thing. At least not here in Germany.
I think it's called "fair use" in the US. You own a legitemate copy and you install it (once) where you like.
However you missed something: In there glory days muslims also had a good drink of wine and cup coffee as well. In fact they had so much coffee that "don't drink as much coffee as a musmlim" is a saying in germany (Original: "C-A-F-F-E-E - Trink nich so viel caffee - sei doch kein Muselman der ihn nicht lassen kann.").
So I think they where a different kind of muslim at that time as well. Far more relaxed. Only later "new" interpretations of there religion made them what they are today. Which is worse then beeing complacent. One usualy can accept that (My fault - I should not have been so lazy). But religious interpretation....
I have written to them more then once that I found the "new" Novel site crap. I like your description: mazelike! You click in circles and never get anywhere.
Of corse I never got an answer!
Ahh, the other thing that has upset me: I18N support with Novell is not was good as it used to be with SuSE.
BTW: Best is when you are in another country where don't understand the language. Go to google.com and get google.ua all with cyrilic letters - just great.
I wrote a very unfriendly (but not unpolite) mail and a month later the "Google.com in English" link apeared. It had been there before but now it is not translated into the local language any more - allways in english and allways latin letters.
Indeed - I allways feel as if I have been beamed back in time when I have to use archaic Vi.

Especialy the visual mode is cool. Select some text and you have a whole new set of commands to operate on selected text.
And of corse you can customize the key mappings for each mode seperatly - another feature missing from Vi.

Which is the reason I program Ada nowadays.
I know I repeat myself but VMS also has
/Version_Limit=1
PURGE [...]
and
DELETE *.*;*
or
SET DIRECTORY
And - as others pointed out - users who know what theses command did.
But VMS has:
PURGE [...]
and
DELETE *.*;*
Do I have to say more?
Martin
If you would not have said it I would have done so.
Martin
PS: If you do get around trying to learn Ada here my shamless plug:

Microsoft has Offices in Europe. They have subsidiraries in Europe. They have warehouses in Europe.
Anything they own in Europe is up for graps.

I have a similar problem with firewire attached storrage. I just moved the mount commands into: /etc/init.d/boot.local
which allways served my well for tricky a file system mounts.

All very true. I remember those times. But it is all gone now. M$ could not make big bugs with non x86 and stopped supporting anything else.
