Sadly a lot of the harware in Iridium is specifically desgined for switching voice comms - ICO however were able to re-design their sats due to the fact that they haven't got any into orbit yet...
As far as I understand the situation, it's not law per se, but legal precedent. The guy who sued Demon Internet and got a ruling from the judge that Demon were libel for the content on their servers forced the emergence of a huge 'grey area', that urgently needs sorting out - hopefully when the libelled magazine mentioned earlier takes their case to the European Court of Human Rights.
1. RDS and RDS EON (Extended Other Network) is a great system for it's time. ie about 1981. That's why there is no security built-in - it just wasn't a design consideration (should of been, maybe?).
2. Very limited info is delivered to the user, including:
Station name Station music type (Blues/Jazz etc) Station Freq's Traffic Flag
3. 'TP' (Traffic Programme) is OPTIONAL. You just hit the TP button to turn it on or off - it's not totalitarian! We're not that bad!
The Traffic signal is broadcast by any station delivering traffic info. The radio detects these signals and switches to that station, if you have selected TP 'ON'. The signal is not broadcast by the station you are listening to.
First off, if your elected government grants licences for radio stations, then they are by extension giving your, or rather the population's, approval.
Second, there are only a finite # of frequencies with which you can put together a coherent national broacast system. Without licencing there would be chaos - what if your pirate station picked the police frequency? Ambulance? Fire? It doesn't bear thinking about.
I'm 20 years old and am about to drop out of Uni for the second time because of a great deal from industry (lured back by my old management into a new startup, v.promising).
I really don't want to give up my degree though so I'm thinking of doing it via distance learning.
Have you though about a degree with a Uni outside of the states? I'm thinking of the Univsity of London's external program (www.lon.ac.uk). (I'm in the UK).
I'd love to have a chat with you about this, and if you've got anywhere with your research. Drop me an e any time!
Whilst I accept that English is not everyone's first language, that people type quickly/in a rush, etc.,etc., and therefore accept that user comments might not always be 100% gramatically correct and might 'feature' a few spelling anomalies, I don't think that it's much to ask for the _actual stories_ to be given the once over with a spell checker, or at least proof read!
Actually, the inner workings of the Enigma were known before the war; it was a German peacetime invention that was patented in several countries including the UK! One of the rare cases when trade secret might have been a better idea....
Now now, was that sarcasm I detected? I can identify with this AC - my Domino server doesn't crash regularly, but it does periodically bog down severely. And I hate it when the Server Admin GUI crashes and then refuses to re-start until you've cycled the server. I can't wait to switch my Windows box over to Linux!
I agree completely... after using Lotus Notes/Domino to implement an extranet for a bluechip, I've become physically repulssed at the software! Now a second project has come up I'm using MySQL/PHP/Apache. But I still like Domino for your basic services and out-of-the-box capabilities. Anyone who wants to know more, feel free to email! james
Lack of transactions can be worked around, in many cases. As for the table corruption - which version of MySQL were you using? The latest branch with MyISAM, although offically 'alpha' is very cool.
...which, remember, is exactly the same support we (the UK) give to the USAF when we let them fly F-111's etc. out of British bases.
I think the proof-of-capability bombing of the airfield at Port Stanley by an RAF Vulcan was pretty cool - pitty one of them had to go and break a refuelling boom so it couldn't make it back to home soil...
As a Brit living in California - this is looking like a hell of a lot more of a Police State than Jolly ol' England, or most of Europe for that matter.

co-ordinated by whom?

Oh, grow up and get a sense of humour.

A lot of the stuff going on here in the UK is to bring us _into line_ with the rest of the European Union. Now *that's* scary.

After all, it's only really 73 thousand megabytes. Use a proper numbering system! james
All this from a FRENCHMAN? ;-) (ps we're going to cream you in the Rugby World Cup if we get drawn *grin*) j. (Brit)

I have to agree with this completely; the O'Reilly book was very disappointing. Not a patch on the on-line docs.

Nearly - it's the 'increasingly inaccurately named Hitch Hikers' Guide tilogy'. Babelchip here we come! j.
Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!
Nah, she's alive and well and having JFK Jr.'s love child.

..ROTFL. As Jeremy Clarkson observed re the American war of independence:
'It was a civil war. Therefore, we kicked our own butts'.

Yep, she even changed official protocol so that bowing etc is optional.

You know, I always get the impression that America would love to have colonies, if it were politically correct to do so...

Get a clue.
