"My wireless LAN doesn't work, my webcam doesn't work, my scanner is a pain in the hole to set up, none of my existing games and application software works, I need to download lots of little things to be able to play MP3s, the desktop is slow as hell and the audio and video in Flash is out of sync...PRAISE BE!"
Because emerge and apt-get aren't downloading and installing software at all, are they?
Let's do a fair comparison; VLC (Linux) vs VLC (Windows). Hey, look at that, the videos play! On both OSes! More to the point, the K-Lite codec packs I use don't have any spyware in them...isn't it nice how "spyware" is the rebuttal to any criticism of Linux in comparison to Windows?
As I mentioned in another post, the Linux Flash plugin is so terribly broken in so many, many ways that it's really not worth the effort. Other than that, your post is spot on...command lines should not factor into a normal person's PC usage.
VLC has proven itself to be a true challenger to Media Player.
Maybe for playing video and one or two MP3s (in fact, it's better than Media Player for playing video, although I tend to use Media Player Classic for that). For managing a music library (something WMP is good, if not fantastic at-its habit of rewriting my ID3 tags makes me want to destroy it) it doesn't even come close.
Flash works, but the plugin for Linux is so utterly pisspoor it's not worth the effort. There have been sound/video sync problems for years now, and Macrodobe don't seem to give a shit.
Sometimes, you do get what you pay for, and while Firefox is a great improvement over IE in many respects, it's been trailing Opera for several years IMHO.
FYI, Opera is free (as in beer for the pedants) now.
I'm getting a Mac Mini soon. But other than that no. And it doesn't have a bearing on this discussion, because they are different systems running on differently priced hardware.
How about something at the start with the cast and crew saying "Thank you for paying for this film. We appreciate it". Real customers feel better, and those who ripped it might feel some guilt if they see it.
Fantastic idea! A genuinely good idea in a Slashdot comment, nice:)
HL2 works, and the Sims I can live without. I don't know what F.E.A.R is, but I don't suppose it's going to be good enough to make it worth while putting up with a whole new level of Spyware support from Microsoft.
Does it? Half the reports I've seen, including personal experience, say it's unplayable. *waits for lots of people saying they finished it using Cedegay*
Windows is not a spyware magnet. Internet Explorer is. Don't use Internet Explorer (yes, you don't have to use IE on Windows!) and you're fine.
I will admit to dual booting Windows, purely because the games available for Linux are still catching up with the commercial offerings.
That's one way of putting it...
All the big houses are shifting the consoles which they see as less demanding in terms of development and support and less prone to unauthorised distribution of their software.
You really think nobody will release games for PCs anymore? They're a massive market. Far more people have PCs than have the latest consoles, and some types of games simply don't translate well to consoles (e.g the original Sims, strategy games...).
If it comes to a choice between enjoing only those entertainments that make moeny for Microsoft and Sony, or of doing what I damn well please with my own machine, I think I'll stick with Linux. However, your mileage may well vary, and I wish you joy in your choice of software platform.
That's fair enough. I have nothing against people using Linux or whatever, just people who go around claiming Windows/Microsoft are some kind of satanic evil in the world and that everyone should shift to Linux (which for most people is nowhere near sufficient) because they say so.
It's been my experience that people who like windows just don't know any better.
What a lovely generalisation you've made there. Would you like to explain this comment to someone who's used god knows how many Linux distros and FreeBSD, but has chosen Windows because he can't be fucked to go fixing it every few days? How about telling me if "just don't know any better" is, as I suspect, code for "are complete retards because they don't use my favourite operating system"?
Apple aren't banned from starting a record label, or selling music. They just can't use the Apple name on either the label or (debatably) the music store, so as to avoid confusion. This is the kernel of trademark law.
Funny, because when I installed Windows or, hell, Ubuntu, Fedora, FreeBSD and Debian on the same box, they all worked fine, giving me a full range of resolutions and refresh rates. Mandriva was the only broken one.
That anyone using an Nvidia graphics card can't use it. The shipped X server on the DVD ISOs, and probably the CDs as well, is broken for NVidia cards and just shows a corrupted display. You have to do a text mode update, or use VESA while you do a graphical one, for it to work properly.
"Hi, I'm trying to run Doom 3 on a 486 with a Voodoo 3D card and Windows 95, but my frame rates are around 0.2 FPS!"
Honestly...

What fucking planet are you living on?

...unless you're using a Stallmantastic distro like Debian or Ubuntu which doesn't supply libdvdcss so you can't watch most DVDs.
IIRC either TurboLinux or Linspire or something like that have a licensed DVD player included. Other than that, no way.

Christ you've got a good memory.

...I can look forward to getting support from the NTL Broadband outsourcing Moonbase. Joy.

Yeah, I couldn't figure out how they managed to miss that. After all, Slashdot introduced the site to a whole new audience!
I think you're thinking of Goatse.
...which is where the problem with X was. Do keep up.
Maybe "don't use Microsoft" might be a better solution for those of us who like to have fun with our computers?
Yeah, everyone can have fun playing all those really popular Linux games like Half-Life 2, The Sims and F.E.A.R.
OH FUCKING WAIT.
You might as well ban mannequins.
Don't give him ideas...
I doubt that Boeing would want gravity outlawed...surely that would dent their business a little bit?
Friended. Best post I've seen in ages :D
You only give me your funny papers..
Probably typeset using Quark XPress on an iMac, ironically.
Duly noted :)
