I know it's idle, but where is the news..? I don't come to slashdot for comics, that's what RSS feeds are for.
Maybe they figure they'll be posting an article about cut cables later in the day and are trying to head off the "OBxkcd" posts.
Speaking of which, OBxkcd: http://xkcd.com/33/
what's with real-life shrink-ray, freeze-gun and devastator?
I know you didn't mean the thing that the Constructicons combine into, but I want one of those. Only with less evil-robot and more I-ride-around-with-my-purple-and-yellow-awesomeness.
Quake Gauntlet is a circular saw with a lot of extension cords, and the guard removed. (or one of those battery powered ones, but they don't last long enough to win a deathmatch with)
I cannot imagine--if this did happen as reported--it did not violate laws.
How could it not? Doesn't matter what technology you use to do it, either a computer with a webcam or a zoom lens and a slightly-opened curtain or hiding in a closet with a Polaroid, taking pictures of someone without their knowledge or permission while they're in their home is illegal. Hell, just plain old LOOKING without recording it is still illegal.
Another note: If they retrieved one photo of someone underage engaged in a sex act (this includes the "m" word, I assume), they are guilty of manufacturing and distribution of c. p, which means 10+ years in federal prison.
Never mind sex act - a person undressing could be enough.
What were these people thinking when they set this up?
They were thinking of "security" (actually control in the guise of security) and nothing else.
"Disabled" might mean "removed"
Disabled means not working, removing it would stop it from working. Yes I know that's not normally how the word is used, but non-tech people might use it as such.
So, is it a case of a person using the wrong word and accidentally being misunderstood, or a person using the right word and hoping his audience misunderstands him?
About damn time. I feel a bit pumped that the tide is shifting here, the things we know are immoral are starting to get called on why they're done, even with the best of intentions.
I think the only reason they're getting nailed for this is because they went so far over the line. A less flagrant violation - one that didn't raise ZOMG KIDDIE PORN fears - wouldn't have caused any uproar.

So for some reason this page wasn't loading right, so I went to Google to get a URL. Saw the video, but also found the site. The comic is genius. Reminds me of being a kid without being entirely mindless kiddie fare. And some of the plot twists are as logical as your average SF or comic-book plot twist.
Some of you guys probably know these already, but it's important to get them out there:
Michael Geist's Blog - Dr. Geist is a law professor who takes a rather dim view of the constant calls to make copyright law more strict.
The Pirate Party of Canada - a small concern now, only about 100 card-carrying members, but it's not going to get any bigger (or reach the point where it's officially a party) if people don't get involved and at least send a bit of money their way to get over the legal hurdles. ($10 membership fee).
Yep. If you see any news item these days that can be summed up as "retarded Australian legislation and/or ban", just assume it has the Michael Atkinson seal of approval.
Or Stephen Conroys.
Oh, yes. The minister of the Internet who seems to think his job is to destroy his portfolio.
it's all inside the confines of the school, but it still scared me.
I'm pretty sure that students have no expectation of privacy on school grounds unless they are in a bathroom or locker room.
While stupid, it's entirely possible for a laptop to be taken into a bathroom or locker room, especially if the kid just chucks it into their bookbag and takes it with them.
If any device is capable of doing 24/7 surveillance, I think it's a good idea to assume it IS doing 24/7 surveillance.
I've already signed about a dozen contracts that allow them to monitor anything I do with the computer. I'm going to go back back and reread those _very_ carefully.
NOTICE: Your recent anti-company speech (excerpt: "What the hell did I sign here?") has been recorded, transcripted, and reported to your superior.
Also, don't take your work laptop into the bathroom anymore. We don't need that.
If the French Government really cared about Child Pornography, it would be taking studies like [1] below seriously and not playing cloak and dagger with treaties like ACTA.
Politicians care about child pornography. They just care about power and money more.
Oh, and helping out their buddies. But don't worry, child pornography is somewhere in the top five... ten. Probably top ten.
Oh, and hiding their misdeeds. Top twenty, almost definitely. Maybe.

I like some previous post's suggestion that he try to ban or "rate" motorcycles according to how gang-like they are, and see how far that gets him, with the Hell's Angels or anyone else.
I never understood why people didn't want to be catalogued. I think life would be lovely if everywhere I went, everyone knew what I wanted.
That can't *possibly* be a bad thing!
"Economic automation is complete. Our research will now encompass other frontiers. Yes, this is the consensus we have created. Our unity will soon be absolute. The remaining boundaries are vanishing. Yes, share your mind with everyone. Open yourself. Your needs are the needs of all. Let us understand and be transformed. Yes. Transform each other and transform yourselves."
Yeah, the Helios ending from DX2 rather scared the crap out of me. Like Borg 1.0. Yes.
Yeah, thats a good pre-emptive way to handle that.
I would prefer that over having to deal with an upset customer.
Funny thing is we just had one of those. Had the disk and a handwritten license key. Said he threw the original away because it was "just a sticker". I was like, "So you knew it was important enough to write out a copy, but threw the original away...?" He got mad and stormed out. And that's the end of it. No phone calls, payments to reverse, etc. etc. You can talk customer service all you want, but some people are trying to pull something.
Really. Why not write out everything on their driver's license and hand the written copy to the cop next time they get pulled over, see how far it gets them.
Best I could do with that is "okay, give me the Windows CD and the key it comes with and Ill fix it", when they cant produce it, they shut up.
Usually. Not always. (My favorites are the ones who insist I'm the one who sold the OS, because apparently "that computer guy at the place there" is specific enough to mean me. Yeah, sure I jeopardized my job to sell you a cracked XP under the table!)
Where I work standard company policy is to get them to show the original license key FIRST, if at all possible. If they can't prove they have one, we don't do the install. You get a few jerks who are cranky about it (most are reasonable) but it saves massive blow-ups down the road. Also saves "Of course it's XP Pro! I'm a professional!" when trying to sort out OEM/retail or Home/Pro distinctions.
Somehow I don't see that being easy to enter on an iphone while playing doom...
Wasn't easy to enter on a keyboard while playing Doom. Hell, wasn't easy to remember (I'd need to recite the full name and use that as a mnemonic). Made worse because usually you had to type it twice in fairly quick succession. All likely reasons for why it was changed to IDCLIP for Doom 2.

Actually it's more like "all the enemies in the direction you were facing when you fired it from the position you're standing when it hits".
Yep. A picture for illustrative purposes. (From the BFG FAQ.)
Not really something you can build in real life.
Alas, life does not let us shortcut the laws of physics with a code patch.:)
Where's my portal gun? I thought we were supposed to be living in the future.
Sorry, you'll have to get in line behind Avery Brooks, who's STILL waiting for his flying car.
Who uses a crowbar? Real men use chainsaws.....
And real ninjas use chainsaw nunchucks.

files that have been over-written still contains bits of the old files that will execute and cause blue screens.
Why not? DNA contains bits that will de-evolve you back into a frog or lizard or caveman.

$100... that's £64.
100 decimal is $64, silly.
(Sorry, couldn't resist. Now all we need is a currency that uses a 0x prefix and we can be REALLY confusing!)
This is the same idiot?? All is explained!

In fact, as soon as I read that Mark was going to the dark side, I did a full rip of the entire SysInternals website
You too? That makes three of us so far that I know about.
There's a "laser dentistry" place down the road from me. I considered it because it sounds awesome.
I've seen Space Mutiny, so it sounds hilarious.
Pay for storage AND maintenance of said storage. The ISPs shouldn't be forced to spend a dime on this, even if it does pass.
ISPs pay, increase rates to make up shortfall. Result: The average joe pays to lose his privacy.
Government pays, increase taxes to make up shortfall. Result: The average joe pays to lose his privacy.
I'd like a third option, please. How about "we don't do it and no one pays"?
