That's a great quote. BUT... It over-simplifies things quite a bit. The rapid outsouring of high paying skilled labor needs to slow down a little to give those economies that are losing jobs time to re-adjust.
High tech (high-skill) jobs require a major investment to get... 4 to 6 years of college at a cost of thousands of dollars for many of us. It's dangerous to confuse manufacturing jobs which require little or no training (and thus little or no skill) with high tech jobs that require years of training. Jobs that require very little training tend to pay much less.
Right now in the US the average new job created pays about $800 less a month than the jobs that are lost overseas. If the trend continues and the outsourcing increases at an exponential rate, it could lead to a serious economic disaster and a hollowing-out of the middle class.
Okay. I'm done venting. Feel free to yell at me if you wish.

  2. Great... on Online Gaming Ad Network Launches · · Score: 0

Everywhere you look there's advertising. EVERYWHERE. I got so sick of hearing nothing but ads on the radio that I finally switched to satellite. A company needs to get its message out, but our culture is quickly becomming super-saturated with ads.

Now I'll be subject to advertising while playing games, too. Product placement ads I can deal with (like all the Sony Ericson stuff in Splinter Cell). That's pretty passive, and is easily dismissed when you're really in to playing. Having massive in-your-face banner ads on the walls while playing an up-coming game like Quake4 would completely irritate me.

I used to work at ChimpUSA, also. Sometimes people would ask, "I have a Packard Bell... will this run?"

The moment they said 'Packard-Bell' I knew the answer was "NO" regardless of how fast or how much RAM the pile of junk had.

Heh. Replying to my own comment. That's sad, much like having a conversation with one's self.
Apple's iPod is doing well because it looks great, performs great, and gets the last part of the equation right- price. I think Apple as computer manufacturer would have a larger market share now if they could have done something about the price several years ago. Their products have always been innovative in design and functionality, but their "go-it-alone" approach to everything drove up the cost of their products.
So... I guess my revise crappy equation for gadget success is (shiny + smooth - price) = success.

  6. Shiny parts... on The Technology Hype Cycle · · Score: 3, Insightful

Lots and lots of shiny pieces. Or smooth pieces. Shiny + smooth = success.
I think there's some truth to that. If Gadget A catches your eye and is aesthetically pleasing it will probably sell better than an uglier but more functional Gadget B.
Apple tends to blend form and functionality rather well.

You are correct, kinda. Mars is a little different than Earth if you examine its orbit and its tilt, which has a lot to do with the 'global winter' that everyone seems to be talking about.

Don't be so silly and assume that all networking solutions are implemented in the same way. The typical build can transfer about 2Gb of data between build servers. But... here's the kicker... that's on our unix network. Doe you see where this is going? Web browsing usually doesn't happen within that network because... duh-duh-duh-dummm... our Windows network is COMPLETELY SEPARATE from our unix network. Most people use their Windows boxes for email and surfing. That's it. But good thinking there chief.

  13. I'd actually get work done... on Ethernet at 10 Gbps · · Score: 0

At my place of employment we have a distributed build environment that can slow to a crawl sometimes. That's typically when I make my usual web-page rounds. If we had a network that fast I'm sure everyone could get more work done since the build bottleneck would no longer be the network but the build servers themselves (which are blazing fast :-).
