But what you're trying to do is to pass judgment on something you don't know about first-hand, when so much of the issue is first-hand. You don't experience it-you have nothing resembling the motives behind it. Transsexuality isn't a case of someone being screwed up or delusional and choosing based upon those delusions to change their sex.

No, XX/XY doesn't hold. Google the aforementioned Klinefelter's, androgen insensitivity syndrome, or just ISNA-there are plenty of other possibilities, and XX does not mean female, and XY does not mean male.

Oh, transfolk never say you can pick and choose your gender.

Larry is not choosing to become Linda.

In fact, Larry has likely had periods in his life where he wished Linda would just go away.

But that's not how it works.

Transsexualism isn't about "men choosing to become women" or "women choosing to become men", it's about "women finally telling people they're women" and "men finally telling people they're men."

Oh, and I think you meant your sex is decided by your DNA(mostly). Gender's quite a bit more than just DNA.

  5. Re:Linda *is* a female (Was: Re: One of ...) on V For Vendetta Trailer · · Score: 1

What I was asking about was whether Linda was actually identifying as transsexual, rather than transgendered-that is to say, she is establishing her identity(in this case) as a transwoman, as opposed to say, crossdressing or any of the other possibilities. And yes, most do agree, but one of those groups that don't are transsexuals who don't identify as having switched genders, just sexes-and so, as we're talking about a transwoman, it's important to differentiate between the two.

I think there's a difference between transsexualism and transgenderism, but I do think that it works as a category-it just doesn't work for everyone, including, as I noted above, some transsexuals, who prefer the inclusive term of just trans(and transfolk to replace the transgendered).

  6. Re:Linda *is* a female (Was: Re: One of ...) on V For Vendetta Trailer · · Score: 2, Informative

Actually, Klinefelter's is a form of intersexuality and is not a mental disorder. Even the concept of Gender Identity Disorder as a mental disorder is arguable, for various reasons. And Gender Identity Disorder isn't developed...the two possible other causes you site can't have anything to do with it-generally, this is one of the few things the psychiatric and trans communities can agree on(CAMH and Blanchard/the whole "Man Who Would Be Queen" school being the exception, I believe). And yes, Linda Wachowski needs help-being herself. Transfolk are transfolk-try to deny that and you create or perpetrate transfolk gender hells. Actually, transsexuality is right(sorta) from a biological and psychological perspective-not for everyone, but it's right for the people who are trans. And the jury's still out on the flaw/feature bit.

There's a rumor that Larry(Linda being her true name) Wachowski has disclosed that she suffers from gender identity disorder and has a female gender identity.

If you want that in language you won't need to look up: There's a rumor one of the Wachowski brothers is a transsexual, in which case they are siblings, not brothers. Undergoing sexual reassignment surgery has nothing to do with their status as brothers or siblings.

I wish I did have mod points, but as I don't, I'll just have to add a bit more onto your post.

I've only heard small rumors and such from various sources, but from what I've heard, what Linda's going through is transsexualism, not transgenderism-or am I wrong?

Other possible keywords: transsexual(just the first page of results for that is very informative), HBIGDA, gender dysphoria

Wikipedia's section on trans stuff is an okay starting point(although they use the outdated and problematic term of transgendered as a category).

And I wish modern science and medicine was beyond that in general...there's so much we could learn...

  16. Regarding FLA. on Trent Reznor Challenges Music Norms · · Score: 1

One thing a lot of people forget is that FLA(Front Line Assembly) is roughly only 1/3rd of a band-that band being Rhys Fulber and Bill Leeb(although Fulber did leave FLA for a little while)-the other two thirds of the band being Delerium and Synaethesia/Intermix(Conjure One plays a minor part, too). Between the two of them, they have produced an insane amount of music, but if you're trying to track the evolution in their style, you've got to listen to it all. Together, they make for an excellent study in just how blurred the lines between trance, ambient, and industrial music can be, and you also get to listen to a large collection of simply amazing music. If you really like FLA, and you want more stuff exactly like it, pick up Delerium albums from before Semantic Spaces(the stuff after that is not industrial at all-still really nice stuff, but much more ethereal, melodic and involving many more female vocals)...For example, you'll get the original track The Bonening(by FLA, off Complete Total Terror Disc 2) is based off of-Bleeding, by Delerium. It's a really nice way to see how the same basic melody can be interpreted two different ways by the same people(although Rhys didn't have much input into the contents of Complete Total Terror, as it's mostly unearthed stuff Bill did by himself).

  18. Not D20 based. on Cartoon Based on D20 Modern Setting · · Score: 1

Remember, D20 doesn't refer to a game using D20s, it refers to games using the D20 system-the system first introduced with D&D 3.0, and used in D&D 3.0, 3.5, the last two Star Wars pen-and-paper roleplaying games(the ones WotC has done), the Everquest pen-and-paper roleplaying game, the Wheel of Time pen-and-paper roleplaying game, and the D20 Modern game(including Urban Arcana, D20 Future, and D20 Past), and a few others I've forgotten. The D&D cartoon was based off of 1e D&D, IIRC, which is not a member of the D20 family of systems, but is a member of the D&D family of systems.

UA cartoon: There's plenty of room in that framework.
Eberron: See http://games.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=145400&c id=12182177 for why Eberron was possibly the only option for a D&D MMORPG.
Bioware: A proven track record for trampling all over Realmslore.(7 games/expansions. How many broke Realmslore? 6. SoU had the stupidity that was stingers in Anauroch. For some reason, I'm thinking Tales of the Sword Coast broke something, but I can't remember anything exactly, so for now, it's the one that didn't.) The Realms community is one of the most vocal pen-and-paper roleplaying game communities out there, and definitely the most vocal of the groups that WotC is still dealing with. And WotC needs to keep them happy-or they will not only lose a community, but they'll lose the people that keep that product line straight(Boyd, Greenwood, Costa, Krashos). And they care about continuity in everything. WotC is heading more towards giving them stuff to be happy about then the other direction, as they get more of a net benefit from that, actually. And that community enjoys Realms based computer games-to some degree. At the same time, they're compiling a list of what they did wrong. This is different from just straight persistent fandomism-because it matters to their games-it's kind of hard to run a game in Saradush, for example, if Throne of Bhaal blasted it to the ground...So, if this group will scream and cry if Bioware tramples over the Realms again, then they had better make sure Bioware doesn't trample over the Realms in what they're doing. It wouldn't surprise me if they got Boyd or Greenwood to check over the modules before giving them a go or stop signal. It doesn't make creating Realms games impossible, it just makes it a bit harder. Hell, there are still unresolved hooks from 1e(if only Troy Denning hadn't slain the Sleeping Lords-that would make for an excellent computer game!).

Oh, and I'll respond to any parts of either this or the post I linked to, if you've questions or criticisms.

But I don't think that's the reason why. Disclaimer before I continue: I've nowhere near as much experience with Dragonlance as I do with the Realms-so some of these factors might not be applicable to Dragonlance.

First off, geography. Doing a FR MMORPG is a huge task, because you have to cover all of Faerun. Which you probably can't. So you have to set borders. WHERE? The Realms does not lend itself to setting borders on the areas you're playing in, and that's fine. The only place you could use without setting arbitrary borders would be the Dalelands, and that has its own problems(hugely detailed, too few cities, no metropolises, too undiverse a monster/enemy population). If you try and take on all of Faerun, you actually run into the same problem-you'd need to set arbitrary boundaries(sure, the Spine of the World's to the north, but how about the Endless Wastes to the east? Those are past the Sunset Mountains, yes, but you could easily get around them by going to the north of Lake Ashane and heading along the Golden Way).

Additionally, any MMORPG has to set itself from its competitors. Ignoring the system/rules options the developers implement, you face the fact that D&D is so old. It's especially apparent in the Realms, which is so old and so influential that a lot of Realms content(which has uniquely Realmsian twists and aspects near-always) has been ripped off and put in other games over the years(minus the uniquely Realmsian aspects and twists, of course). An MMORPG wouldn't preserve those aspects-and as such, it would seem tired and worn out to your average MMORPG player, even with the D&D Online name.

    What's Eberron's responses to these?

    1. Set it on Xen'Drik. Yeah, it's a continent, but not too large of one-and you can set boundaries wherever you like, it's that undetailed.

    2. Be Eberron-infused with new concepts and a slightly different theme from what's out there-seem different from the rest of the pack.

    3. (No, you didn't miss a paragraph above) Eberron is new. Eberron is undetailed. As such, Eberron can give the developers the freedom they need to develop their setting as they want to-they don't have to be constrained(see how well SWG did with that)

And of course they gain interest in their new setting-but I don't think that's it.
