Bad math. If you use oversimplified or wrong models, you will solve for bullshit.

That's why you have to explicitly state you assumptions, then go back over your solution checking them. e.g. sin(theta) = theta. Fine, no problem, theta better be small when all's said and done, or you've just wasted your time.

'Engineers' that don't use math, those are the ones to watch out for.

But this was a trigger happy sniper, likely prone out with cover. Head shot. 'Raised his hands too abruptly'?

He could have just twitched on a light trigger and made up the justification, believes it now though.

I honestly believe that universal cameras will sort the cops as much as they can be. But only if they kick the ones whos cameras repeatedly 'fail mysteriously'. Which I expect, maybe, half the departments to do.

It's not that the SWAT guy's camera is all that much help, (and putting CCDs in scopes isn't easy) it's that he wouldn't be on SWAT if he had a camera on his chest as a rookie cop.

Postal service is dying. Volume of 1st class mail shrinks every year.

Having them pre-fund their pensions is the sane thing to do. There will be perhaps half as many postal service employees in 20 years.

  12. It took a reboot to get the Roku to return to normal function. If the Roku didn't end up hard crashing, you typically had to reset it after exiting youtube.

I think the mpeg decoding hardware/code combination wasn't working right with common codecs. Roku 2...so kind of old. In the end, who cares. Disposable hardware.

Roku's ongoing denial that there was any problem, when a second on forums showed it to be common, put them off the list for new hardware. I don't expect hardware to last forever, but expect transparent discussion of issues. Make me waste an extra hour...that was worth twice the price of the new hardware...fuckoff forever.

In places like Chicago, Albany, Boston, you typically put a thermostatically controlled antifreeze heater wire in you gutters.

Ice dams are bad, destroy roofs, somewhat unavoidable, but size must be controlled. Icicles can and do kill people off three story buildings.

  14. Last I checked Chicago has an average of two deaths/year from falling ice.

Icicles on cornices are unavoidable to some extent, heated wires in gutters etc only do so much. Designing your roof to side off snow, right onto a sidewalk is not unavoidable.

The trick would be to do it on schedule, so the cleanup crew is standing by and the area is safe. Best would be to get it to slide with a simple long handled snow rake, high pitch roof style. But that ship sailed.

Spray the roof with 'Pam' in fall Find a way to blow some air under the snow, get it moving on cue.
