Actually I'm a rather astout "MS-bitch" as someone put it above. I like Linux, but I like my w2k more. I just want to see a little more even coverage and comments.
This happens all the time? When will people realize that Linux is inferior and unsecure. Everyone knows that open-source peer-review is a lousy tool for security-audits. No, why doesn't everyone run Microsoft products? They're completly secure and doesn't have any problems at all. Because that's the power of closed source.
Ah, the classic "If you've done nothing wrong, you should have nothing to hide".
The problem with this is who decides what's wrong. It's enough with one rotten egg in an organization to be able to severly misuse this technology, not to speak of it the whole governing body is a rotten egg! We have democracy, and such a fractioned way of government just to prevent abuse of power. The same should apply to the technology in the hands of those ruling. It shouldn't be all powerful or all-seeing for that one off chance that they go bad. You have to think one step ahead, and not just at how the present situation looks.
I've yet to meet anyone with any degree of experience in multiple operating systems who still feels positively about Microsoft.
I've used Linux since 1993, FreeBSD has been on my harddrives for several rounds spanning over 2 years, used BeOS for half a year, MacOS at work, DOS 2.1 -> Windows 2000, SunOS at school, Amiga/Workbench (sitting right next to me), C64, and more. Do I qualify? No? Does it help if I say I'm also studying Computer Science & Engineering? Oh? So you're at least prepared to listen. Good.
I like Microsoft. Nono, I really mean it. I mean, DOS sucked, Windows 3.1{1} sucked, Windows 95 sucked a little less, 98 even less so, NT was ok, and 2000 is actually very good, far more so than Linux.
During all those years Microsoft put out shit, I ran Linux. But Microsoft caught up, and improved. And to be honest, Windows 2000 is a hell of alot better than Linux. Sorry to say it. Windows got a consistent GUI, good administration possibilities, easy to use and quick tools, all the software I want and need (can we say Diablo 2), and even an ok command line nowadays. Oh. And the VC++ debugger - you can't beat it.
I also really like their hardware, I've got a Microsoft keyboard and a microsoft mouse, and it's the best ones I've ever had. (Would be nice if xfree86 supported more than 5 mouse buttons (and that's including up/down on the scrollwheel), or didn't force me to edit a textfile to be able to properly set my refresh rate)
So don't say you've never met anyone who didn't like Microsoft. Generalizing is bad (but inevitable).
You prove my point exactly:) You're one of those 1% who really just want to do one thing. However most of the things you mention have very little to do with OS, except 1, 3 and partly 2. The rest is app-wise. And the thing is, any buisness trying to put down all that time, writing an OS that might be just a little better for audiophiles like you, would sure as hell go out of buisness. An open-source collaboration wouldn't have to worry about that, but I doubt anything useful would come out of it for a very long time. Writing OS:es isn't child play.
I must refute this. This seems to be a widely spread misconception, which is true when it comes to servers, but absolute b*llshit when it comes to clients.
A normal developer often run some kind of IDE/Compiler which is heavy on some operations, and then perhaps some graphical suite which is heavy on others, and probably xmms/winamp/mediaplayers/whatever which taxes other systems yet.
A normal office worker wants to use an office suite, perhaps a graphics program, and several communication and networking packages.
A gamer wants to be able to push everything to it's max not just "media-capabilities" for example, and games often really bog down on everything in the system.
A scientist probably wants to be able to take in several measurements through various means, while still being able to produce sound/graphical output and perhaps being able to do some reports.
There's simply no way you can "aim" a client-OS in any sensible ways, without losing 99% of even the aimed-market. Client-OS:es can't make any predictions as to what they'll be used to, contrary to server-OS:es which might be aimed for DB work or something else specific.
The destruction isn't mutual anymore, and it is assured if you fuck with Uncle Sam.
Well, luckily, given some more years, and with the current rate, there will be no intelligent US citizens left to build or use anything more advanced than a remote control, so why worry?
I downloaded the file (aobeta4.zip) yesterday, with 400k/s and it went just fine. And it was from one of the official download places. So I don't see why this should really be a problem? I higly doubt all 100k persons actually will download it.
I am not american and as such, I KNOW where the countries of Earth is. Don't make stupid assumptions. Your arrogance baffles me. And btw, I've had to work with people from Kazakhstan, and if it's something they aren't good at it's english (and keeping timetables, and having sane custom regulations). I've even fucking encountered people IN the US that doesn't speak sensible english.
Just quick question? Don't you study other languages in american schools? I'm a swede, we begin studying english in uhm..3rd grade nowadays I think (9 years old), and our next language at something like 6th grade (been awhile since I was in school and they've changed it a bit). Many then proceed to studying even more languages when they get older. Seeing the fact that you don't have to learn english it would seem you're in a perfect position to be truly multilingual?
I just wish your parents had chosen not to have you, but oh well, you can't get everything. There are reasons why they have that many children, primarily because it's the only thing that can keep them alive when they're older. It's also a good strategy to ensure your family lives on.
"Lack of motivation" I think they have more motivation than you will ever have. Hey...let's do it like this. I colonize your country, take you and your family as slaves, then leave, creating a power vacuum in which civil war emerges, then when your home has been burned and plundered, and you're starving to death, I'll drop by and say "Hey...if you only had some more motivation you'd be fine". How about that?
On Water Paradox's homepage at http://www.trios.org he seems to take a strong dislikening at the Scientologists for trying to force their views upon other with legal matters, while he himself tries to force his views on other with retorics and mythology. Is any way better or worse than the other? Why do you think Water Paradox makes a difference between Scientologists and their views, and Christianity and their views? Is one more dangerous than the other? Why or why not? Discuss.
Öhh...what?!? My unmoderated comment above has been rated as "overrated". People on Slashdot will never cease to amaze me in how stupid and narrowminded you can get.
As stated above, I have Win2k and IE 6 preview without the key. And after actually READING the Tech Report article and the comments on the article, you quickly learn that the key comes from Terminal Services and can be set on any MS OS. To quote an anonymous poster:
"More than likely what has occured is that the system in question (the one that these keys appeared on) has connected to a Windows 2000 Server via MS Terminal Services or Citrix ICA. That will result in these keys appearing in the registry of any Win32 client OS (2000 Pro, NT4 WKS, 98*, 95*). "
They rightly assume that most users will be able to cope with whatever they're given.
What kind of retarded attitude is that? If that's the way you feel I have a programminglanguage for you. It's called Mupp and every command is state-dependant. Meaning that only way to know what a single character do is to read the program from the beginning, keeping track of state as it changes.
And I actually have a point with the above. It's that even though you CAN do something that's bad interface it doesn't mean you should. I've used Linux since 93, I'm a developer myself, and I'm a bit interested in UI design. And one of the major reasons that I switched from Linux to w2k was the lack of standard interfaces. I might be able to use Netscape, Emacs (which I *cough* still use in win) and Balsa, but that doesn't mean I want to. If I can get a consistent desktop, where everything works the same way, that makes me a lot happier, because I don't have to think and "fight" the application, just because things work diffrently than the other apps that I have running. In the end that makes me faster, and that I like.
The only good UI Linux has ever had on the other hand was the commandline. The only usuable GUI Linux has ever had is KDE, which is making tremendous achievements considering what they have to fight against.
The problem is that the unions in the states have gravely misunderstood their purpose. Just like american law, they take it by the letter instead of by intent, which makes everything go horribly wrong. Unions are supposed to protect the workers from mistreatment by the companies, not, as they are, trying to be as greedy as possible.
Look around you in other countries for better examples of good and working unions.

Hope the irony isn't lost on you...
But I have to say that was the best, most interesting and most funny celebrity site, I've ever seen. :)
Congratulations to a well-performed troll.
Real simple. Don't run Linux.
If ANY country in the world have rulers it's the USA. Sorry to say it.

Err..what you just calculated is
/(Price/QphH) which is QphH^2 / price
QphH
which really isn't especially interesting.
Difference being that MS isn't quite that stupid. It's not a coincidence that they've stayed alive for this many years :)
