Before you flame me, read this whole article. This is a fairy tale of linux winning over microsoft. Not that it couldn't (or didn't) happen, it's just that the author presents it in such a format as to make it unbelievable. Did anyone else get that same impression?
You are my hero. I hate dual booting because I always have to set up new HW twice. (or more then that) Until I can plug everything into my USB and have it work, then I'll build 2 seperate machines. When I was in HS, and had a crap load of time to mess around with the computer, things were different.
The ps2 won't kill the X-Box, but the GC will. However, after the dust settles, we'll see if Nintendo can reclaim the title of living room gaming champion. I hope that they give Sony a run for the money. The quality of the games for the PS2 hasn't been what it should be. ( but then I haven't played FFX either )
I just want a DVD-RW that will record off of my CABLE (digital or otherwise) so I can record the simpsons (and other shows). and not have to worry about the quality of the recording degrade so quickly. Or a Tivo that has one of these puppies.
Why? Sun is a hardware company, not a software company. They make very little money directly off of Java compared to the money that they make from selling a Sun Enterprise Server or 2. Java is their way to promote their hardware. Strange I know.
Is what he said about Direct3D not being as scaliable as OpenGL true? and if so, why so. Is it because in OpenGL any hardware vendor can implement their own extensions to OpenGL and directX the apis are totatly controlled by MS? Or is there a more technical reason that has to do with the way that the API works. I've read a lot about both APIs but haven't actually programmed with them. If anyone knows the answer I'd like to know
This story was terriable! Unless you've played most of the FF games or at the very least FF 7 the plot made no sense! The plot was heavily based in the concepts told in FF7, hell you even get to see some of the same visual scenes in the movie that they had in FF7. I was expecting Cloud to pop up any moment and slash Sepiroth to pieces. ( Maybe a little supernova to REALLY confuse the crowd )
One of my friends that I dragged to the movie fell asleep during it! That's how bad the plot was. They drone on and on about this Gaia thing, all the while not giving anyone in the theater a reason to care or relate to the people in the movie.
The insurance companies (as well as the credit card companies already maintain a crazy amount of info on everyone. This is just the unreversable step twords making it easier to access any information at anytime.
By current line of PC cards do you mean the GeForce 3? Because the PS@ seems to be able to handle anything that any OTHER video card can pump out these days.
The difference is that with drugs, (as opposed to jeans) that a large cost of developing the drug is the testing involved to make it FDA approved. There are many trials involved. All a 'knockoff' has to do to clone a drug is reverse engineer it (from a sample) and then get that (FDA pre-approved) approved. The drug industry would die if patents were to be disallowed. (That might not be the WORST thing, but it would be bad)
Kinda of a side note, but how can MS say that 'Windows Media Audio 8 format (which can store twice as much CD quality music as MP3 in the same amount of hard disk space)' The bitrate at which they encode the music sounds like crap. I've encoded a bunch of songs in WMA in order to get more music on my Nomad II and when I compress them to '96KBps CD Quality' they sound just like an mp3 at the same bitrate!
I play both console games and PC games and more often then not I play console games. Why? because I am always reformatting my HD, or installing linux again. Or, if I manage to install a game it doesn't work.
Yesterday I spent over an hour installing and upgrading my drivers so that I could play Black and White. Is this a good use of my time? No.
I loved the original DOOM and downloaded every map that I could get my hands on and 95% of them were crap. I downloaded tons of UT maps.. Most are CRAP. Point in case? Most expansions are crap. Not to knock the HalfLife CounterStrike team, they are awesome! but unfortunatly the exception rather then the general case.
It takes a lot of time and effort to make quality product.
The X-Box will allow you to customize your game. The Hard drive will let you download/install massive amounts of crap (skins/weapons/etc.) So don't think that the PC will be the only kid on the block with that ability. While most of the content will be created on the PC still, if the X-Box is a success, then you will see CounterStrike style mods for X-Box games. You can count on it.
It will be cool.
I play console games because I know they will work and won't crash... I really hate games like B&W when they crash.
That's true, these gaming titles are WAY better then this 'Matrix' game that nobody knows what it will be about.
The battletech series of games are really awesome. I need to get MW4, but MW3 rocked the house. These games could actually MAKE me buy a X-Box as opposed to the MAtrix.
This is a key license for MS, but until the game is proven to be a good one, then it doesn't matter what key license it is.
The X-Box isn't going to kill or even hurt the PS2/GameCube in the long run. I think that it will more likley be the beginning of the end of Windows-based PC gaming. If it's as cheap to develop for a console as for a PC, then why develop on a PC. I think that most smaller outfits will prototype their 'breakthrough' game on the PC, then present it to a publisher. If the publisher decides it's good enough, then give them the money to make it an X-Box game. There is and always has been more money in console gamin for the producers and programmers of games then in PC gaming. That's why nintendo still makes gameboys instead of switching over to PC games.
I really wonder why it took them so long to announce a matrix based video game. With the popularity of the Matrix movie you would think that they would to have cashed in on it before. Maybe they are using this game to help generate awareness and hype for the next movie since most 'normal' (read non-slashdot reader) people have not been aware of the next movie.
Why get a clear case, I just leave mine off.
And don't give me that crap about you might spill something in it. Mine runs better now that I cool my Athlon with Coke. I think that I should switch to diet cause it's starting to get fat.
Hate to be an a** but the X-Box only has 6 megs total memory, the 32Megs you are talking about is shared with the total 64. Second, the PS2 has only 4MB texture/Framebuffer.
Does this mean that the X-BOX beats the PS2? NO, in fact this does not mean that the X-BOX is a 'generation' ahead of the PS2 ( a comment on another comment). Truth be told, we don't know what either box can truely produce in the terms of graphics. A few advantages the X-Box has are real VGA out and a HDTV out. (The HD/Ethernet are not advantages to games, I truely fear that someday I will play a X-BOX game and it will wipe out my entire HD)
I don't think so, since the PS2 is playable today and the X-BOX isn't out yet. Don't believe the hype and don't even worry about getting one of these machines. (PS2 or X-BOX) If they are successful then you will be able to buy one.
I already own a PS2, maybe I'll buy a X-BOX, but whatever box you buy, don't listen to Daily Radar, they are just a hype machine and always blow the stories out of proportion in order to get more web hits.
With an attitude like this, it's no wonder that third party companies don't make it. I hope that Be doesn't release the source as open just to spite the attitude that "Well, we can't make money, might as well release the software as open source." Anyone that plans on using the software after it's open source should go out right now and buy a copy of Be Software (assuming that they don't already).
BTW, I only have angst against those who don't pay for the software they use, yet complain when software costs too much.

Informative?

Mod this guys UP!!!
Dude, Half Life doesn't use the Quake 2 engine. It uses the Quake 1 engine, modded a lot in the terms of AI. B4 u tr0ll, chek y0ur f4cts

Actually it is the people who have 50 icons in their taskbar that cause windows to crash all the time.
Sun One. (No, really that's the name of the Sun initiative to stop .Net)

You'll never be able to play HL at 1600x1200 on a console. But then again, you'll never have a driver issue either.

This guy maybe anon, but I think he's got a clue as to WHY they are doing this.
Sorry about the first line, it hav 64 megs total memory. Typo.

One thing you are forgetting is that USB 2.0 tries to solve to low speed problem of USB 1.0. So that all you'll need is USB.
