  5. Re:Low Linux Budgets ? on Businesses Slow to Adopt Linux · · Score: 1

The prevailing thought that you can hire just anyone to administer a NT box is just crazy. Have you really thought about that claim? Can you take anyone off the street, and sit them down in front of a NT box and have them start administrating it ? no you can't, same goes for unix. Just because everything has a GUI for windows doesn't make it easier to use. It just makes it look easier to use. You still have to have the same knowledge of the internet, of TCP/IP, of security holes ( and how to plug them ) in either case.

What makes unix more expensive in the long run is that MS, unlike unix, makes it harder to change the WAY in which you do things on your machine. Take the boot system for example, every linux distro has a slightly different way to set up the runlevels. SuSE, RedHat, Debian all differ slightly in the way they start the daemons on boot right? Why, because Unix is set up to be changeable in the way that is non-standard. You can set up any way for starting these programs, even your own Runlevel system if you so please. Thus a Sysadmin ( especially one who doesn't know anything) can come in and change it all around to fit her view of the system. Not document anything and then leave the company, leaving the next Sysadmin with a pile of usless scripts that must be decoded or destroyed.

Windows on the other hand, makes it very HARD to change the way things of that nature work. You can't (easily) start defining your own boot system. If you learn how to change the services on one box, then you can for ALL windows boxes in the world. Thus if a sys admin leaves, it's much easier to replace them since all the windows machines are the same no matter where you go.

His point isn't that NT/XP is full of holes (linux and NT have the same number of security holes if your admin is bad) , it's that people assume it is because you pay for it!

It's the same with speaker wire. People assume that monster wire for speakers / Svideo /whatever is better because it is more expensive. However, most of the time, you can go to the local hardware store and get 12 gauge wire that is the same or better and solder your own connections. The difference is that the latter is harder and most people want a guarantee ( even if it is worthless).

As a web developer, I get to push people to the 'low bandwith/faster/easier' direction, but if a customer wants that 500k background picture, then there is nothing I can do to stop them. Same goes for any 'feature' of a website, be it flash, applet, javascript, or movies.

Why haven't there been more research into interlaced style images, so that you could say... download half the image if you wanted to. Get an IDEA of what the image looked like, then download the rest if you really wanted. What happened to all those fractal image comression techniques that were supposed to make downloading images a joy instead of a pain. Considering that the Geforce 2 Pro has the same claimed memory bandwidth (6.4 Ghz) (http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/01q4/011001/ titanium-02.html)

The MAX performance that this chip will have will be somewhere around the level of a Geforce 2 Pro that is overclocked. However, one major counter to this is the fact that the GF2 has it's own memory and own buses to memory. It has to contend with the main processor for memory bandwidth. This will cause a huge loss in performance. How much? Who knows, but it can only get worse if they reduced the size of the caches on the XBox Pentium CPU.

DirectX is a monster, it does more then just 3 things. According the newest SDK from MS, here are the features of 8.1

Microsoft® DirectX® 8.1 is made up of the following components.

DirectX Graphics combines the Microsoft® DirectDraw® and Microsoft® Direct3D® components of previous DirectX versions into a single application programming interface (API) that you can use for all graphics programming. The component includes the Direct3DX utility library that simplifies many graphics programming tasks.
DirectX Audio combines the Microsoft® DirectSound® and Microsoft® DirectMusic® components of previous DirectX versions into a single API that you can use for all audio programming.
Microsoft® DirectInput® provides support for a variety of input devices, including full support for force-feedback technology.
Microsoft® DirectPlay® provides support for multiplayer networked games.
Microsoft® DirectShow® provides for high-quality capture and playback of multimedia streams.
Microsoft DirectSetup is a simple API that provides one-call installation of the DirectX components.

Anyway, DX will win because in the end, programmers (in the general sense) are like everyone else, they are lazy. The API that provides the most bang for the buck will win.
