  1. License Codes? on OSI Creates License List · · Score: 1

You mean something like the license codes that Jim Kingdon suggested in a segfault.org feature? Hm, I don't know, while it might simplify understanding what a license allows you to do quickly, it might also be confusing. I think the best solution is to have a few "standard" free licenses -- GPL, LGPL, BSDish etc. Having a lot of incompatible licenses is very evil, and making it easy to create new licenses doesn't make the situation better.

  2. QPL does this I think. on OSI Creates License List · · Score: 1
    From the QPL:
    a. Modifications must not alter or remove any copyright notices in the Software.

    b. When modifications to the Software are released under this license, a non-exclusive royalty-free right is granted to the initial developer of the Software to distribute your modification in future versions of the Software provided such versions remain available under these terms in addition to any other license(s) of the initial developer.

So, if lots of people/companies start using the QPL for their software, can code from several QPL'd projects be mixed? And if someone uses code from several QPL'd projects with different "initial developers", who gets the non-exclusive royalty-free right to the code of that project?

True, these guys have contributed a lot to the community and therefor earnt a lot of respect. But they can never speak for the whole community. They are not are leaders, they are people who we respect and we let them be our spokesmen. They shouldn't claim that their opinions are the same as the opinion of the whole community. If the community agrees with what they're saying, they will get our support, but they shouldn't take it for granted.

  7. Cloning on Bochs Author Launches VMware Clone Project · · Score: 1

Free Software projects are usually aimed at solving a problem -- making it possible to do something you couldn't do or making it easier to do something (read The Cathedral and the Bazaar by esr). Sometimes there are proprietary programs already doing these things -- or almost doing it -- and in that case it's a good idea to borrow ideas from those programs.

  8. You've made some assumptions... on Bochs Author Launches VMware Clone Project · · Score: 1

True, but I don't think many GNU people think it's important to start a project whose goal is to make it possible to run windows (and other proprietary OS's) at the same time as GNU/Linux. (It's not on the GNU TODO list ;)

  9. That GNU and Linux thang on History of Open Source · · Score: 1

Well, as you say this is a never ending discussion (see for instance the comments to the GNU/Linux vs. Linux poll on /.) The reason for calling the OS GNU/Linux is that the OS is more or less a GNU system with Linux (the kernel) instead of Hurd. Also, calling the whole OS Linux makes it difficult to know if you're reffering to the kernel or the whole OS when you say Linux. Anyway, read what RMS has to say and decide for yourself.

Well, RMS doesn't force you to say GNU/Linux, he
just asks you to do so for the reasons that we
all know. And just because you're not required to
do something, does that mean that you shouldn't
do it? You should give credit to RMS and the FSF
for what they've done not because you have to,
but because it's the right thing to do.
