  1. why not team up with google on Ask Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm just curious to what you think would happen to your comany if you were to merge with Google. I'm guessing with Google's corporate culture, you willl still be able to innovate browser technology like you have been in the past. But the Google tag with your browser will help gain more market share, and promote people coding web pages with W3C compatibility. For the good of all concerened, Opera and Firefox need to be the dominant web browsers in the market. What do you think?

You're right, I just looked at the Appl. Phys. Lett. paper. They measured it to 50 GHz and curve-fitted it to get 604 GHz, assuming a 20 dB/decade drop-off. 50 GHz can be measured with a HP network analyser.

  4. goddaman managers on Truth in Advertising? · · Score: 1

Well its funny because I was having this discussion with my co-worker 10 minutes ago about how many people publish data in scientific journals that is at best massaged to an exten that it can't be reproduced. The problem, sadly isn't just in industries but has perpretaded academia too and probably has been there for many decades. I wouldn't know because I'm still young and naive:). But seriuosly, I think most of the corporate problems exist due to managers who get paid insanely high salaries and need to justify and maintain them by making engineers work like slaves and give them crap about TPS reports and fucking morale and what not. C'mon say it with me... get rid of managers, lawyers, insurance companies. What do you know, insane amounts of coffee while listening to Rage against the machine does make you hate the man. Aaaaaah

  5. Re:New LOW for Slashdot.... on Bhopal Disaster Revisited [updated] · · Score: 1

I agree with you in that the Indian government should shoulder much of the blame but I disagree with you when you say that Union Carbide did its fair share. I would like to draw your attention to this website where the lack of safety regulations at the Bhopal UC plant is highlighted. (http://www.bhopalexpress.com/facts.html). Its obvious that the safety regulations in place were less than adequate and for that it is ONLY UC which is to blame. Why? becuase, there were the majority shareholders (50.9%) and therefore derived the most profit and hence were the most responsible in the safe functioning of the plant. So for that alone, the chairman, needs to serve time in the prison. As for the money and its distribution, I think $470 million was about half the compensation that was needed. In 1984, 1 USD was Rs. 7 as opposed to Rs 45 now. So $470 million at that time was definitely not enough for 3000 families. And it was certainly not enough for site cleanup.

  6. insurance companies and lawyers are evil on Medical Care Gets Outsourced Too · · Score: 1

The US suffers big time because of insurance companies and lawsuits. I'm actually scared to go to the doctor because my health insurance is basic student insurance provided by my university. The doctor is scared to treat me because he's too afraid of getting sued. Who benefits from all this? Lawyers and insurance companies. The US does have the best healthcare equipment and technicians. But the costs are INCREDIBLY high because of insurance and lawyers. I'm originally from India, and I can vouch for the fact that healthcare is awesome there but the equipment is not as good and as up to date as the hospitals in the US. There are also less doctors per patient there but at least you're not scared to go to them and they're not scared that they go bankrupt whenever they make a mistake.

  7. when you're in asia, you gotta innovate on Third World Research, Development & Innovation · · Score: 3, Insightful

When you're surrounded by China and Pakistan, in probably the most hostile region in the world (I'm discounting Israel because Iraq, Iran, etc DO NOT have WMDs), you have to innovate to survive. Just because some sections of the society don't hae adequate food, water and shelter doesn't mean that funding into scientific research is completely stopped before all come up to speed. Most of the time, science is what uplifts the poorer sections of the society.

That's exactly what I was thinking... this is probably the dumbest article ever posted on /. I'm from India, and I don't remember anyone of my friends actually buying a branded PC, pretty much everyone either buys an assembled one or assembles one themself. And THEN they pirate windows.

First it was a move towards the 13 nm EUV lithography crap and now, its death of the world wide web. Intel keeps coming up with propoganda that makes people wanna buy Intel and invest in its technology. Shouldn't they concentrate on their chip making business where currently AMD is kicking their ass both in price and performance?
