I know how you feel. You DO want JavaScript enabled on most of the sites you visit. The annoying scripts are usually being loaded off a different server. NoScript has a handy little feature (that's not enabled by default) to allow you to automatically allow scripts running from the top level site (with various configurations).
So JavaScript works where you want it, and doesn't where you don't 99% of the time. And it's easy to flick it on once in a while when you need it. Plus, it helps protect you against cross-site scripting attacks. It's worth it just for that, really.
You can licence your code however you want, but if you make it conditional like that you could very easily make it incompatible with the licences they're based on, or open up loop holes, or make it not hold up in court or whatever.
The way they do it for MySQL and others is when you get it, only one licence applies. You choose which one you want to apply, but the choice of the commercial licence means you have to give them money. They're just giving you the ability to sell a product and keep the source closed if you're willing to pay for it.
You must be stuck in the 60's. Right now the Canadian Dollar is much stronger than the US, and it will only get stronger considering the US economy is based on two kinds of jobs, McDonald's and The Iraqi War Machine. The US will became a "second world nation" (if it isn't already) within 10 years. That was the joke the GP was making. If the Canadian dollar is worth more than the American, a small number of CAD would be equal to a greater number of USD. Thus, the joke.
On a side note, I think slashdot may just have been made inaccessible in china due to this thread. Or has it always been that way? I imagine if it were accessible we would occasionally get people from China chiming in with insightful comments on these sorts of stories.
There are also a HUGE number of fan made mods and scripts avaliable on their forums. They add a lot of cool things to the game, like new ships, missions, sectors, commands, etc.
It can have a bit of a learning curve, but it's well worth it. Pretty, too.
Exactly. I mean, you could make a case for some sort of general "addiction" disorder, similar to the substance disorders. This would be related to OCD, and cover things like gambling, work, and yes, maybe even video games. But there's NO reason to single video games or the internet or anything else like that out with their own entry in the DSM. The diagnosis and treatment would likely be the same for all of them, why make separate disorders?
"As any AA member will tell you, tomorrow could be the day they fall off the wagon."
This is a bit off topic, but thats a problem with the AA system. Complete abstinence now and forever, and if you ever have even the tiniest sip, well, you've failed. It's out of your control now, might as well have the rest of the bottle.
A better system focuses on moderating drinking. It's ok to do it once in a while, but maybe you need a schedule or allowance or something similar, so there's no "falling off the wagon".
A method of writing a story such that that the supposed antagonist was really part of the protagonist's immediate family and must be saved in order to defeat the real villian.
It's possible that in order to to build things the way god wanted, it required a period of "evil god" to shape us a certain way, followed by where we are now, a period of "good god".
Or fucking around being "evil" was fun for a while, but now it's time be "good" and get things done.
I should mention that it had to be avaliable in Canada. And since a lot of my friends are moving and don't have phones yet, if I can talk them into getting Vonage I can free months.
I don't know how this lawsuit is hurting them financially, but it can't be all bad. I just moved and was looking for a phone solution a while back. I was considering just ditching a landline and getting a cell. But then I saw these articles on Slashdot and actually saw how cheap Vonage was. $20/mo for everything, how can you beat that? There's no contract, only a $40 installation fee.
Even if they crash at the end of the summer, I'll have only paid $30/mo for a good phone system. I call that a good deal.
ADD is not a disease. What you're thinking of is ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a developmental disorder. ADD was rolled up into ADHD in the DSM-IV, and no longer exists on it's own.
Absent mindedness is something separate, and is likley caused by someone thinking about too much stuff at once, filling up their working memory (ie, the absent minded proffessor, always thinking about new research, not what he's doing now).
That being said, drugs are often overperscribed, because it's easier to take a pill every day than do anything active. Forms of therapy can be very effective in helping people with psychological disorders. Cognitive behavioural therapy and depression/anxiety, for example. Not the Freudian psycho-analytical crap.
And this is why Microsoft is getting in bed with the *AA on this one. They don't give a fuck about DRM or the movie industry, this is just a convenient excuse to make it more difficult for users to switch to Linux.
The map is wrong, you can detect the five tastes all over your tongue, not just in certain regions. You can see for yourself if you're particularly interested, just drop some grains of salt or sugar in different places on your tongue.
Mod parent up, this is some classic psychology right here.
Pairing a neutral sound with something you like, such as the parent's example of a friend logging into IM, is a great way to make you like the sound. You begin to associate it with the thing you like, and it can become a secondary reinforcer.
Yay for psychology!
To be fair, there are other costs to be factored in. Even if they are making a per-unit profit, they have to sell X units in order to recoup the amount invested in R&D and marketing.

I'm agnostic, but I'll just throw this in here:

Because it is lawyers, nobody will stand up and argue.
I'm pretty sure someone will stand up and argue. The lawyers themselves. And I hear they can be rather good.
Because that would make WAY too much sense. Who wants that?

Wait..
Nice.
I bet they're trying to preempt AMD doing the same with an integrated ATI chip.
Well played, Intel. Well played.
Since when did it pass for games? Starforce anyone?
