It's funny, but they actually DO do a reasonable job of making sure old games work. They just have to be actually old. Like, DOOM and X-Com.

When you grab those games, it comes with DosBox preconfigured for you, ready to play. Not that setting it up is the worst thing in the world, but it's terribly convenient to be able to just download them and play and not have to worry about it.

    Also, nice and cheap.

If you find it on your computer, you deserve it. You probably had or were in danger of becoming infected by the worm that exploited the vulnerability this was trying to fix. And I don't care if it's your computer or not, if you can't be trusted to keep it from polluting the Internet at large then someone will have to do it for you.

A well designed "white hat worm" could just sit and listen for a while until it got hit with a computer probing for the vulnerability and then infect and fix the computer that did the probing. Once it has fixed a certain number of computers, or a certain amount of time has elapsed, it removes itself.

A few other games where you don't need the DVD in the drive:

Stardock's Galactic Civilization II, and their new Sins of a Solar Empire. In fact, there's no copy protection on the disk at all. And once you buy it you can download it from them whenever you want, even if you completely lose your DVD and serial number. As long as you still know your Stardock Account.

World In Conflict also lets you play without the DVD when you play in multiplayer only, which is quite nice.

In fact I found the $50 to be quite reasonable. Getting HL2 and episodes one and two along with TF2 for free was a nice bonus. But portal was worth the price of admission alone.

A game doesn't have to be long to be fun. It was tight with no wasted moments. A lot of games could be a lot better if they just cut out a lot of the crap that's just designed to make it take longer to finish.

It's a mistake Sandvine encourages, actually.

I was at a talk one of the founders of Sandvine was giving at a conference a few weeks ago. I was sick at the time, and I couldn't really remember why the name sounded familiar until the very last question asked was about the RST packet forging. Up until then the guy was basically saying "We have really awesome QoS hardware, we throttle bandwidth so everyone is happy!"

I also noticed he was confusing the definition of Network Neutrality, whether intentionally or not. The very first question was about network neutrality, and he went on talking about how QoS is good for the internet in the long run.

They even had some crazy newspeak-sounding name for the division that came up with their internet-sabotaging hardware, too. Pretty shady company, honestly. I wish I had been feeling better/remembered who they were faster.
