Mark Hurd's success is directly tied to the amount of people he can. He's absolutely known as a hatchetman, and will do so at the drop of a hat. The problem is, it works...he doesn't care about the employees, just the board, and doing what he does best makes them very happy.
Hurd used to be the CEO for NCR when I worked for him, and he did the same thing there....from there he moved to HP, and whacked something in the ball park of 7-9k jobs right away. Nothing will make a company look profitable faster than cutting payroll.
That being said, and my overall feeling for the guy is that he is a complete douche...HP screwed up in letting him go, plain and simple. As someone mentioned, you can't have it both ways, HP.
Secondly....I've followed this story a little bit, due to my knowledge of the man, and doesn't it seem to anyone else that the whole breakup w/ arguably their most successful CEO in a very long time, went really fast and really quietly?? (relatively speaking)
I believe there was more to the story as to why he left HP...what that it is,the world may never know.
I think this is a great idea...you could really market this. If you were to create a PDA/Cel phone with blue tooth functionality, give it a decent amount of space for holding music, data, etc...then accesorize.
Have a selection of sunglasses of varying colors, styles, etc. that can connect via blue tooth to the PDA, which i am sure would make the glasses sleeker and not as bulky. (I am specualting on that one)
Have headphones for when the glasses aren't needed / wanted. Evidently quality is an issue in the market, from other posts here, so make them comfortable and of a decent design.
Someone else in this thread mention a watch that would be attached as well, scrolling the time, music titles, whatever you wanted. Once again have assorted styles, etc to choose from.
You could then allow the customer to mix and match the different items to their taste and sell them the entire kit. While maybe a small market would go for this at first, I think that once people realized the possibilities (and if you don't make the designs look like something out a bad 80's sci-fi flick) you could do pretty well....the all in 1 package that was modular.
Alright...lets get nitpicky...Saddam, while he was dictator of Iraq, acted out of line, not the entire country. My apologies for not narrowing the scope.
Sure, I will give it a shot... (and you use your real name on slashdot?? Wish I would have thought of doing that...)
So what do you call sponsoring many dictatorial regimes all over the world, in favour of democratic governments?
Not sure what the argument here is, but if you're saying that the US is in the wrong for supporting dictators in order to bring about democracy in a country which isn't...Whether its right or wrong, I do believe that people should be free. I don't know exatly what situations you're refering to, but I do think that people do have a God/Allah/whatever given right to be able to live a life that allows them to live something more than an impoverished or oppressed / or threatened lifestyle. Whether you agree with the approach taken. I don't think it has, as much as people like to claim anyway, as much to do with resources as it genuinely does about getting who are in power that shouldn't be....out. In the example of Iraw, Saddam had more than enough opportunities to open to the UN and allow the Mr. Blix in show the world what he supposedly didn't have. I _STILL_ don't believe he didn't have WMD's, I think that the intell was incorrect, but that he was able to get all of the hardware out to Syria, or some other sympathetic country. If so, why do he baulk so hard? The US, while heavy handed, is genuinely attempting to make peoples lives better.
While torturing people at will and not giving the reigns back just because you want the resources of the country? And you send your own troops out to commit attacks on the local population and then later blame the resistance and a guy who's long dead.
Unfortunately, I think these are all parts of war, except the resources thing, which I have already covered. War is ugly. War is painful. War is a disgusting thing. But if its the only way to make a better situation for this country, I think we're in the right in doing what we're doing. No one wants innocent people to die, and if you really think the US does, you're so far gone that it won't make a difference what I say.
You really think that its ok to let a man like Osama and Al-Zawahiri run around and be able to do whatever they like, and not try to fight it on any front?? To me, thats an even worse crime than anything you've mentioned.
You really don't think that the US is the only one that engages in the backing of other countries do you?
If so, please feel free to go rinse your head repeatedly. The US does it, the UK does it, Canada does it. China does it. Every country in the Middle East does it. Its how the world works, and whether you admit it or not, your country does it too.
Does the US make the right choices...not always, but we're able to deal with them as they come. Stop assuming that your countries shot smells like roses..I promise, you've probably got just as many skeletons in your closet, if not more.
We're not smug, we're telling the truth. The United States and Canada have many parallels in the way each country is run...lot of differences too, but the similarities outweigh them. If Canada were to goain control, I really doubt anything would change since the US and CAN are so intertwined that the US would just tell you "Look....we've already been doing this forever, do you really want to re-invent the wheel here, or just let us do what we've been doing"
You're sick of American's thinking we're the best thing since sliced bread, eh? We are a proud country, for right or wrong, but I don't think SMUG is what we are. We may bring our game face to issues that require it, but don't make the assinine assumption that every American is a smug prick. That just goes right up there with Canadians being as rude as the french but not as smart. Aren't stereotypes fun??
I think we have the best system going, which allows me to be able to call the President a fucking asshole and not have to worry about the suits banging down my door.
Enough with ragging Germany? I didn't see anyone ragging Germany because of the Nazi's. I saw people talking about the reasons that they aren't able to discuss the Nazi's or be Pro-Nazi. I guess having a few World Wars will do that to a country, those silly bastards.
We may not make the right choices all the time, but I think the USA has got more "right" than any other country.
How about you actually log in so that we have a better idea who the dipshits are...its tough to tell by your writing style, you all write very similar.

It has nothing to do with the fact that _I_ haven't done any of these things (which isn't true, but nice assumption).
I am not the one with the Golden Ticket. I am not the one holding the key to MILLIONS of peoples lives in the palm of my hands. This guy does, and is possibly capable of helping people on a level that no one has probably ever known. If I held what he had...I would do it in a heartbeat.
I understand that it could possibly disrupt his life for the entirety of it. I understand that things will never be the same for this guy, and to a degree it could be a bad thing, but if he were to approach this from the right angle, and make the right choices, his life, while busy...would be completely set.
He would never want for another thing in his entire life. The people that say that they wouldn't release their blood/whatever to the world unless they were guaranteed X% of profits make me sick as well. The right thing to do would be to make sure that you made it very publicly known that you were releasing your blood for analysis and that you don't want any one company to be able to take this and prosper, possibly strangling a market or making it in any shape, form, or fashion, difficult for people who need this, to obtain it. The companies would still make their normal money, they just wouldn't be able to charge a massive premium since they held the cure.
The other things that this guy would be wise to do, would be to make sure that all of the decisions he makes are "without evil". I think that there can definitely be a happy medium between him making himself available for testing, and then being able to take time out for himself. This could become his job from now on.
He holds the ticket, so he could call the shots...its just a matter of how he decides to play the game. As a human, or an asshole...
More appropriate to this conversation would be that you had designed a car that could possibly save the millions of people that die every year due to accidents, but refused to send it out to the masses because it would cause a major disruption in your life, for an indeterminable amount of time.
If someone has HIV / AIDS, they just can't get rid of it...
The fact that you would hold yourself above millions of lives tells more about you than I care to ever know.
First off... I am not a *unix fanboi...I am using WinXP right now, but I just have to say that you're crazy if you think MS hasn't tried every trick in the book to be able to glean information from your PC, you're outta your mind.
With this new entry into the field, I must admit that I am very disappointed in Sony. I have my issues with the **AA's (that I am evidently more passionate about than I thought, according to my friends who are tired of hearing me prattle on about it) and I can't stand to Sony moving in this direction as well.
I think (and will probably make anohter post about it, but will mention it here) that the article makes a good point in that these types of measures aren't going to stop anyone that really wants to get their hands on the music.
I was reading somewhere the other day...Hasn't a work around for the new DRM already been done...for the rootkit as well? All they're doing is making life more difficult for those they supposedly want to sell to, while the people that are in the business of pirating en masse are going to figure out a way in (probably less than) days after any new technoolgy comes out.
I was watching the Bravo channel last night, and they were running down the list of 100 best scary movie etc....there were some real gems in there that I need to go back and check out.
Back to the point of your post is that I normally don't get "freaked out" by movies...I'll occasionally get the jump kinda reaction , but never really the scared feeling until I was about 25 or so....now I can freak myself out if I just think about a certain fear for too long...
My biggest fear ever, and this is clearly from too much tv, but is to be in a room with lots of windows and no blinds. (I can't sleep in a room without something covering the windows).
I have this fear that (in true horror movie fashion) that I will look over at the window (dark outside of course) and there will be nothing there, look away and then look back to someone (thing) pressed against the glass.
Think about this for longer than 5 minutes and I suddenly have a need to go find a bar thats open late...
Now thats absolute crap...I know several people who aren't religious but still believe that there is residual energy left from a person. Whether you want to call that energy a persons soul is another matter entirely, but a blanket statement like that leaves no wonder that you post AC.
I guess it would depend on your definiton of the fact that Ghosts exists...I don't think that they've been scientifically proven to exist, as well I am pretty sure more than a grand has gone into trying to do so....a haunted stapler....a copier possessed by the devil himself.....thats just business as usual around here, pal.
I think he got some hummus on his lens.

And the UN does...you're so absolutely right. Because the UN is so free of corruption (oil for food) and would never mess this up at all.
Because the UN knows how to take a stand and has the balls to actually do something when a country acts out of line??
You're right....I don't know why I didn't see any of this before.
omg...you people amaze me.

Yes it is...I have no further excuse except that I am at work and ready to leave.
And still hefty...well, more husky than hefty...
