I do some work with VLC running video to IPTV settop boxes(amino). It can do IGMP UDP Broadcasts, Multicasts, etc. It can do on the fly transcoding of files as well. It can also do VOD and schedule based playing. You could do just about anything with it. I have a feeling my IPTV provider uses some form of VLC. They have issues with VOD on our boxes.. so does VLC:)
You can't really say they're adding fishing to the game purely because of the new control scheme. Previous Zelda titles included fishing. It seems like it would just make it more fun. Damn them!

Just because sales raise does not mean that a Windows/PC user has 'switched'. Even if a PC user did buy a Mac, it doesn't mean he's abandoned his PC for OSX land. I, myself, am considering purchasing a Mac just to work with the otherside. That in no way means I will never use my Windows/Linux boxen again.
Actually, there's that button on the (some)keyboard for context menus that simulate a right click. because of this I hardly use a mouse in Windows anymore
My point is that I see magazines like 2600 or Phrack, not necessarily having to be all about how-to's, but more geared towards that type of reader. There's a place for different types of articles including general interest, news, etc in addition to the how-to articles. Hell, anything to get rid of 8 pages of letters in 2600!
Totally agree with the last statement, it's sad that most people use it as a stepping stone into a security career. Unforfunately(or fortunately?) these magazines don't usually mix well in anything other than possible pentest type jobs. I know I've been rejected for several jobs due to the fact that I've written in 2600. Alot of places see you as a liability.
My articles could even be blamed in part of the decline, as they aren't totally exploit/hacking driven as they are generally informative. For example, my last article was about Bit Torrent(Old news by the time it was published). It wasn't about how to download l33t war3z or how to make it work when behind your corporate firewall. It was merely a small intro to how the protocol worked and what it was all about.
Due to the nature of my profession, I can't write articles about how to crack the new snazzy CD/DVD protection, or hack a Linux box in 12 easy clicks.
Even though, I think there's room for informative articles about how things work, even if you don't explain how to break it. Something like that not in Wired or PC Magazine where every other page is littered with HP/Dell and MS ads, written by the average joe is refreshing.
Give someone a push in the right direction, give them a little explanation about how it works and let their ingenuity do the rest. Regardless, you may not want to put it on your resume.
I've written a few articles for 2600, which seems to have a brotherly attitude towards Phrack. Though, some people consider 2600 to be Phrack-lite, which I can totally imagine. The quality of articles in both magazines have decreased slightly over the years. More so in 2600 imo. Could that be blamed on authors or just on subject matter? I think with the mass amounts of people that have access to both publications, mixed with the 'leet' people growing up into the professional world where this type of magazine may be frowned upon, leads to stale articles and "How to use Kazaa behind a firewall" articles.
Either way, there's always a few good informative articles in either magazine, so it's sad to see one go. You could always read one of them, then go to the other for "the other stuff" without getting duplicate info.
Now we just have to check out even more independent magazines, like Binrev (http://www.binrev.com/ and radioshows like RFA (http://www.oldskoolphreak.com/).
My main reason for getting fansubs over released US DVDs is the quality of the actual subs. The dubbing is horrible, that goes without saying, but not many people mention what an awesome job these subbing groups really do. The best go into so much detail, in many cases explaining what certain things mean(culture clash) and also translating text seen in the background. This can make keeping up with the story hectic, but well worth it in my opinion. I'm surprised these licensed DVDs aren't using stolen subs from these groups.
Until the actual licensed stuff is better (not just as good) than the fansubs will I switch totally to licensed DVDs. They just aren't as polished.

For the home user, perhaps there should be more default account types setup, beyond "User" and "Administrator", etc. Or perhaps there should be some documentation during the install that notifies you that you'll need your administrator password for certain tasks, then when the task you have no access to is needed, it will simply prompt you for the administrator password(not 'YOu do not have permission, please type in $localcomputer/user and password). Anything else will probably confuse the average user.
If not that perhaps there should be an easy install setting that gives you choices of things that can be changed with your current user and things that cannot... That thought is where my topic came from. That's what you get for posting before thinking!
I work for a major company in the test engineer group. We have to install/uninstall/modify software on a regular basis, and because of this we each have our normal domain login(which is locked down) but we're also assigned an admin account to do these tasks under. This is completely understandable because of the type of work we do. But on a machine(not on a domain), at home, with one primary user, there's little incentive for the average user to have two accounts. I doubt most windows users even know about the RunAs feature.
I guess the question is will the average user trade convienence for security? The majority of those I've met haven't and I doubt they ever will.
But seriously, the sexy chicken virus is just one of those that may need to be caught on a linux machine... Actually it's mostly spread on MSN so possibly not.
I was aware of the need for anti-virus on Linux/Unix, but my <fanboy> tags actually worked!
Some of them say "Lower is better" some of them say "FPS" some of them just don't say anything. It makes it hard to gauge if higher is better or lower is better. I mean, some things are obvious like 3dmark 2005 results, but then it says "4D rendering" what the heck is that? Is it measuring FPS?
How would YOU like to make $.05 per every computer desktop purchase from vendors such as Best Buy, Circuit City and Comp USA?
