And neither is anything coded. Isn't it true that most people arent trying to create problems for Mac/Linux, while most people target Microsoft? No system is TOTALLY safe - its not how programs/OS'es are built. There is never a way to totaly protect a system - but there are, of course, ways to make it next to impossible. I'm sure somewhere inside the MAC OS, there's something waiting to be exploited. Maybe its a good challenge? If there's a will, there's a way... Besides, i thought that there was a proof-of-concept cirus for macs not too long ago? I could be wrong... -Red

    It depends on the question:

"How much is it worth to you?"

if the answer is the same or close to whatever is listed, then they buy it. If they want it NOW, its worth more, if they want LOTS, its worth more. See the pattern people?

Supply and demand... and people demand that someone supplies them with gold, so someone does it. If somebody walked up to you and wanted to buy your mouse for five times what it was worth, and you could buy another easily, why wouldnt you sell it?

"Hey, can i buy your mouse?"

    "of course not"

"Ill give you 100$ for it right now"

  8. Hangs head in shame... on Massively Multiplayer Sweat Shops · · Score: 4, Interesting
Well, coming from Lineage 2, i certainly understand the popularity of the market for its currency. The creators of a game determine how easy it is to accumulate money. In lineage 2, it is a bitch and a half to make money at all - your lowest items (D Grade) cost around 1 million a pop, which, while not entirely outlandish, is certainly a high mark to reach. Also, since the game has teired equipment, you tend to get people buying only the best of that grade, be it no grade, d grade, etc. Also a very important fact is that customization of your character is nearly impossible, aside from your equipment. You have skills, but they are completely linear in their development, and it is easy to learn all available skills at a certain level.

So, the combination of all that makes for the stratification of equipment - buying anything less than the best available is a tremendous waste of time, money, and energy. Which are also all very valuable things in Lineage - leveling is stupid slow, soloing is next to impossible for 90% of the classes, and nothing has a high resell value.

This is where the Bind on Pickup/Equip system in WoW really shines - it really helps to control the market from shaking itself apart, which has happened a couple times in my old server for Lineage.

But for Lineage, sieges are fun as all hell. But its reserved for only the hardcore - playing less than 5 hours a day is impossible - youll never level, and youll never be able to do anything on your own, lest you be an archer.

The gold market offers value to people with short attention spans, who are greedy, or who are lazy. I, personally, happen to be lazy with a short attention span. In Lineage, i did not have the time to farm mobs that i got no XP for just for cash -especially since my class was strictly support and could not solo worth a damn. (56 Elven Sword Singer when i left). Same goes for WoW - some people dont want to farm, and since there is demand, there is a company supplying what i wanted. Its really a fantastic idea.

Also, it is important to note that if you gave the people in these other countries the US's minimum wage, it would make the employees ungodly rich, and would screw everything up in the 3rd world country. If they are paid to scale with the rest of the country, then the country will develop, because now people have JOBS instead of being unemployed.

To assume that Nintendo is targeting those two markets is silly. And the argument "oh but they have kiddy graphics" is irrelevant. There are many many examples of excellent games which have cel shaded or other type graphics, but where still fantastic examples of video games. There are also just as many example of excellent games which had the more real look to it. The graphics dont matter, the numbers dont matter... Its how good the games are.

  14. Re:Diversity of Gamers on Games Are Supposed To Be Fun, Right? · · Score: 1

At the risk of sparking the console wars, I solidly disagree with your statement.

I spend lots of time with my Gamecube, and i happen to be dating a solid PS2 gamer. Despite many friendly arguments about the two systems, we have managed to reach an agreement on the difference between the three big ones.

The GCN is the old guy who talks about honour and class. The GCN's games are solid, fun, and entertaining, if you have the maturity to get past its few shortcomings, such as little online play (which i am unbeliveably dissapointed with, even though PSO 1 and 2 are fantastic). Its games are long, "easy to learn, difficult to master" as someone said (Paper Mario is a fantastic example of this) look fantastic, and dont have any OMGLOOKATMYBOOBSDONTTHEYBOUNCESOREALISITICALLY!? type games. Which, arguably, have their own position in the video gaming world (BMX XXX anyone?) but hardly should earn any amount of respect from gamers.

As for "engrossing story lines and lots of unique gameplay" all three systems off plenty of examples of all. However i choose to make a point here:

When I think of the Gamecube, i think of Metroid, Zelda, Mario, Eternal Darkness, Super Smash Brothers, Resident Evil as the "Killer Apps". Those games are fantastic, and ive never played a better one. There are plenty of other "good Games" for the GCN as well, of course. As for the Xbox, it lacks somewhat in the variety of its games, but the few it has are fantastic games. It has the most OMGLOOKATMYBOOBSBOUNCE games, but those examples have occasional moments of solid gaming. I want to play a video game, not look at softcore porn. They are two entirely seperate things. hehe.

The PS2, on the other hand, has such a massive number of games for it, that its hard to find the good games. But there are many many great games for it, including holding the RPG crown (Right?).

    An interesting analogy:

The XBox is the preppy guy in the school. Mr Popular, cause hes the strongest, got the shiniest car, etc.

The PS2 is the Freak kid who wants to be popular. Hes got lots of freak friends, but only a few of them are really good friends.

And the Gamecube is the guy who does it all his own way, and is sometimes wrong and screws up big time. The guy you root for in movies. The Hero-gone-underdog.

I hope Nintendo pulls their head of their asses this season. They started slipping with the N64, and its gotten worse (a couple fatal mistakes on Nintendo's part, saved only by Shigeru's ability to make omgwtfawesome video games.) The hopefully is what its codename implies - a revolution over at Nintendo. Because they cant help the fact that these silly preppy people like things like the Xbox - there is no style, no finesse for them. Nintendo is style, its finesse. Its Wing Chun versus Karate. A truck versus a car. Diesel Vs. Gasoline.

I dare not comment anymore, for fear of being lynched!

    Enjoy my rant, fellow Slashdotters...
