I'm going to to pick on his design goals.
    1. Create a world in which the players had genuine effect on the worldspace.
In all games, players have some sort of effect on the world. How far they can influence/affect the world and/or other players, is up to the designers. A player always wants to be able to affect the world substancially, though I don't think it's a good idea. It can have many unwanted sideffects, and could even turn away new unskilled players. Balance is more appropriate.
    2. Create a world large enough that it would never feel small.
Heh, good luck with that! Why do i feel that the design goals are not design goals but what a player wants to hear? This is impossible. The world will eventually feel small to seasoned players, no matter how big the world is. Even our real world feels small to people who travel alot.
Also games that try to be everything to everyone are bound to fail. This is where game design comes in, so your game does *not* try to do that.
    3. Enable game world interaction beyond the 3-d game client.
Hmm, sure you could provide access through a browser or even through WAP. Many games have done that, and it didn't really make a difference for the game.
It's a nice plus for a game, but rarelly the sole reason to sign up on one.
    4. Encourage a sense of ownership in the player.
A tried, tested and proven concept. Works for almost all games.
    5. Develop a crafting system that would allow seeming limitless invention and creation of items.
This is what every player will ask for before they play the game, and what every player will dislike when they play it. Sometimes players think they know what want, but they are mistaken. They will ask for unlimited options, because they forget the unlimited complexity that comes with it. Case proven with Masters of Orion 3. The game was so complicated, noone could play it.
Plus, if your game needs unlimited options/items to be good, there is something wrong with your game design.
    6. Develop a real money transaction system that would allow players to make money but never cause players to feel that they had to spend money to play.
Is that ingame money or real world money? If it's ingame money, it's almost impossible to make players feel they don't really need it, since it will be a part of your game and one that improves gameplay. Unlikely that any player wouldn't want the resources he's playing for in the first place.
If it's real world money, mixing gameplay with real world money(eg. pay £100 for your new sword +5) is a major game design failure. And one that will turn players away from the game.
    7. Create a story arc that would lead naturally to expansion.
Nothing new there. Some games work this way, some don't.

To sum up, I didn't see any real game design there, no concept art, no technology preview, no indication of what has been accomplished so far. All I saw was yet another "game idea". I don't doubt his desire to make one, however, game/dev boards are full of similar "I want to make an MMOG, I have a great idea, would you like to for me?" posts. Game ideas worth nothing until you actually have something.

  4. Linux as a gaming platform? I hope so! on PlayStation 3 HDD to Ship With Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

If PS3 adopts Linux, it's an opportunity for linux to get noticed by the games industry. They might realise that there is a market left unexploited.

They might also realise that if their games use OpenGL instead of DirectX they can run on any platform, whether it's windows or linux. So there is *no* extra cost in supporting linux.

If all games were published on linux as well as on windows, and linux was an equavalent gaming platform, gamers would sure go with linux, instead of windows, cause you don't have to spend something like £80 for an OS. Instead you can spend the extra money you saved on your favorite games. And that's even more sales for game publishers.

I wish they could see that. Could this be the beginning of linux as a gaming platform?

Wait. If it's a helicopter, why does it need a runway? I thought, you know, they land on helipads.

Yes, they land on helipads. But I'd imagine takeoff would be a problem there, due to high altitude/low pressure, so they might need a runway to hover, pick up speed and make sure they don't get a rejected takeoff. I'm not so sure about helicopters but planes would definitelly need longer runways there.

Would planes really be flying here because of the mountains are everywhere, and going nearly 700 mi/h makes flying a plane suicide. Please help clarify this one.

You must be thinking fighter jets. GA aircraft don't fly that fast. You're looking around 100-350 mph ground speed. If you're thinking commercial airliners, they top at around 350kias(knots indicated airspeed) which at the altitude of everest would be around 400-450mph gs.(at 30000ft, 350kias would be around 700mph gs).

Does Gimp and Gaim work on Solaris, or the BSDs? Linux does not own these apps or Gtk+. You're missing my point. A win32 app that you can run on wine under linux, is still a windows app. So linux apps are linux apps, no matter how many platforms they've been ported to. However, windows zealots don't even want to mention the word linux and prefer them called open-source. So by doing windows users a favor, linux is damaged in the long run.I think we should stop this.

    Linux is a kernel.

Duh. Wherever you see Linux on my previous post, replace it with Linux distro or Linux OS. There. Happy now?

And you, nor anybody else, is in a position to say "must be dropped".

I can say what I like and you're in no position to dictate what I can and cannot say.

Windows support must be dropped from FOSS. Next time I'm writing an app, I won't port it to windows. It won't make a big difference but if many people stopped supporting windows then yes, we could make a difference. And that is exactly what you're afraid of, isn't it?

  20. MS Windows support must be dropped on Porting Open Source to Minor Platforms is Harmful · · Score: 1

Why? Because it's hurting FOSS and Linux. Sure some projects are also successful in windows, like Firefox. But how many users switched to Linux because of Firefox? Very few, if any.

Porting to windows hurts linux, and not just because of the development delays. The value of an OS is how many and what kind of apps run on it. Now if almost all FOSS apps run on windows, windows has an advantage over linux. It runs FOSS apps plus many exclusive apps for windows which cannot run on Linux.

So you talk to someone about 'x' FOSS app and you get "So what if you run 'x'? I run 'x' too on windows. Can you run my proprietary 'y' on linux?".

In a previous /. article, several people didn't even want to reckognize Gimp and Gaim as Linux applications. Hell, not even GTK! They preferred them called "open-source", and not Linux applications or in the case of GTK, Linux API. Their argument? It works on windows! Now, how is this helping Linux?

I'm not suggesting FOSS projects to stop supporting other platforms. But maybe they should stop supporting proprietary platforms, like MS Windows. I think overall, by supporting windows, they are damaging FOSS and Linux and eventually their own projects without realising this is happening. I wish people stop thinking about short term gains(like quick adoption of their app) and sit down and think what's the big picture.

Obviously windows fans won't like this post and it might get modded down. Oh well...
