Whatever you think, the British public has raised over £100 million so far. And I like to think that the Brits who are out there are helping. Like BT who are helping to get the phone systems working again.

And anyway, the BBC has reported how great the Americans and Australians have been, because I heard the 80 helicopters thing, being doubled to 160 days ago.

And its not a competition, we are just helping out those people who have lost everything.

"What the frick is happening to the prices of video cards?"
My theory on this is simply that there is no diversity in the market. Since Nvidia bought 3DFX I really have noticed that the cost of graphics cards go up.

When I bought my Voodoo3 I paid around £100 for it. It was pretty much the best graphics card at the time. Although I could have had one from ATI or Nvida, or at that time, even Matrox. 3DFX led the market, and still managed to provide fair value for money. My most recent graphics card was an ATI Radeon 9700 pro. Even when I bought it for £130 a year ago, it was far from the best, and now it only just handles modern games.

Now, we are left with two graphics card manufacturers who can really charge what they want.

Of course, the complexity of GPU's makes a huge difference. After all, Doom 3 isn't processor intensive in the way Quake was, becuase the majority of work is done by the graphics card.

I hope my rambling thoughts made some sense, really I just hate Nvidia for what they did to 3DFX :D

Now *THAT* would be cool"
This is the kind of thinking that I like. The whole "windows is evil" argument bores me, but practical useful suggestions I like. Obviously Windows is years behind the useful tools in Linux/Unix where one can grab packages of the net easy as 1.2.3. But why not offer the consumer this choice? MS must surely realise that they can't get away with the old school crap anymore. By opening Windows up a little more people will respect them slightly more, and using Windows will become less of a chore. I'd certainly like to remove IE from Windows, WMP I don't actually mind, its certainly a faster, more useful app than iTunes for windows, which is a hateful piece of software.

Well, as you can see from the link Adams sold H2G2 to the BBC, who now use it as an all singing all dancing community. Along the lines of what Douglas originally wanted for the site, it has become an encyclopedia for everyone to have an entry. In fact, the engine that drives H2G2 is called DNA (after Douglas). And in 2005 DNA will drive all of the BBC message boards. Which is quite a cool development to come out of Adams' work. I never heard about this PDA idea, but its a pretty fun one. And these days could be achieved with almost any PDA and a mobile/wifi device. In short, if you want a program to look at h2g2 go right ahead and write one ;)
