I like Linux, Windows and Mac but thats just me. Linux fits the server market very well but we have to remember that its controlled and operated by technically competent people. On the desktop its a different matter we are now dealing with a market where the bulk are quite computer illiterate but are generally comfortable using Windows even with all its flaws. With Vista just about to be released the battle for the desktop market share will be Vista vs XP and in a around 2 years Vista will win just like XP did against 98 & 2K. People will like the visual eye candy that comes with Vista as this stuff sells, and they wont care that Apple had it years ago just like when Apple introduced it on the Mac years ago no one in the Windows market was interested. Linux cant even pass Apple for desktop market share and it been trying so hard for years to get market share with Gnome and KDE but it just isnt working, there is a long way for Linux to catch up here and unfortunately Windows is a moving target also. Mac OS X is having a moment in the sun but its kind of mid afternoon and with Vista around the corner a lot of people will still prefer to stay with the Windows product family. Mac will hang around but I don't expect the market share to change much over the next 5 years.
Microsoft's alliance with Novell may have something to do with Novells control over Mono (.NET Framework) as this is a very large part of Microsoft's future and Microsoft will like to control the direction it takes. With control of media content via DRM locking out open source solutions in the end control will swing back to the commercial solutions. Its possible for people to still run 98 and 2K or even pirated versions of XP but most just dont and instead pay for a new computer with the operating system on it. People were concerned about Media Player and IE in windows forcing out competition and microsoft was forced to release a version of windows without them (in Europe) and no one bought it (and it was very cheap). Just because there is a functional alternative does not mean people will choose it just look at VHS vs BETA. BETA was a better format but VHS won.
Linux has its merit and that is definately in the server market as for the desktop I dont think it really stands a chance.
Why leave america? consider moving to the other america... Austmerica! We are just south of the equator and kinda upside down. We have some new states for you to add to your national map, New South York, Queensfornia, Western Alabama, Northern Arkansas, Texmania, South Alabama, Vicgina. While your here you are welcome to eat all the fine unique foods we have here, things like KFC, McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, still not feeling at home then how about the some Pepsi, Coke, Mountain Dew. You can play baseball, ice hockey, and even grid iron (but you will have to look hard for that one). Also feel right at home as you get processed by virtually the same legal system as the USA we try to make you feel right at home by allowing the MPAA and RIAA virtually do what they like....
When mobile phones get more than 640 Kilobytes of memory no one will want anything else... They have been saying crap like pcs are obsolete for years. Just because habits change doesnt mean one device necessarily replaces another but rather complements it and both will find a place and existance if truely usefull. Just look at linux for the most recent example.
Yeah they will get a million monkeys typing away on word and a million monkeys typing away on open office and the monkey that actually figures out that it is doing something pointless will be the one who decides which word processor is best. Then microsoft will spank that monkey... forgive me Im tired and I have to go to bed now.
When I was in my senior year in high school back in 86 and Apple IIe's were the flavour of the day (wonder if linux will run on it?) the math department had a password protected program for tracking and scoring all the students of the school for that year and guess what.. they forgot the password. I was asked what could I do so I ran the program through a hex dump and looked for unusual words appearing in the hex and found a word "ferret" tried it and got in. So its not all bad to be a computer enthusiast (nerd) at high school. I got no community service for that. I had the chance to up my grades but I of course I didnt.
I have a Dell Insipiron 5000e and installed different versions of linux. I configured Xfree86 wrong and buggered the display altogether. Tried every avenue to fix it but last solution was to replace the screen. I will never install linux directly on expensive hardware again. Only ever use it in a VM. Once biten twice shy...
I recently tried OO2 and found the inability to insert/create and edit a simple drawing inside a document as a hinderance. Back to MS Office for me until I am informed of a suitable solution. I am almost ready to go Open Source (on Windows) however the lack of a good PIM is also a setback. Cheers.
rotflmao... another hilarious comment from a linux only advocate. As you should well know for anyone setting up a server they should definately know how to tune daemons and services whether its linux, unix or windows. Just turn of the ones you dont want on it is really easy to do. Once again thanks for a good laugh.
I have to laugh at how angry Linux users get at Windows in general. Its sooo funny, many posts on here are hilarious (yeah yeah like this one) and I am amazed that something as simple as an operating system can inspire such hatred in many Linux users.

They love pirates of the carribean so much that they are making another. Somewhat of a double standard!!!
God Bless home printing! A digital camera, photo printer, rover and a jar of peanut butter....
That chick with a penis already was corrupted...
Gee maybe I shouldnt download the next episodes of CSI Milwaukee or Gregs Anatomy....
I wonder if they can corrupt "battlefield earth" in such a way that it would be actually watchable....

Its life Jim but not as we know it....
Would porting IE to Linux be considered an infection?

will it determine if the woman I am about to marry will turn into a mad cow down the track.... now that would truely be a useful test.
Why the did God make the big bang closed source? Is God afraid someone will make a new universe and everything in it cheaper and faster?
