The press are the one organisation with enough power to fight the Government. In the second world war the allies and the Nazis both saw this. They used the press to boost morale and trash it. If you start making laws which keep everything "naughty" secret, then the government loses the only foe it truely has inside it's own borders.

You must have freedom of press or you never know the dirty things they get up to behind your back.

Think of the press as that friend who saw your wife cheating on you. If he wasn't allowed to tell you, then she can keep cheating on you and screwing you over. If he tells you then you can leave her and get a new better girlfriend. Do you think there should be laws stopping your friend telling you this?

I'm suffer if you don't understand that you're claiming "this book says we have this, so we must have this". When it's been repeatedly shown Bush can doodle all over the book and the general public hardly even notice.

The consitution only applies untill someone decides to burn it. The government has all the power (the army), has the pen (can make laws) and it holds you all captive (want to try and get out of America is they ban you from public transport of all kinds, including boats and planes?). You only have the powers they wish to allow you untill they decide you're not allowed them all more.

The days when everyone stuck together because it gave them power is long gone. Now too many people are blind, greedy little shits, who will stab you in the back for the tinyest bit of profit. Most people wouldn't care or try to fight back as long as it doesn't directly effect them (which unless it's money based, it won't).

Believe it or not these people weren't special, they weren't some super auto patriotic people. Most of them probably hated America and a lot of them were probably going "screw it, I'm moving to China".

You could say inflation goes up from the 90s till today but console prices are still in the same area (at least in the UK). This is because if figures go over £300-£400 then human nature kicks in and goes "Wow that's expensive!"

Back in the 80s (which most compare this to), people bought 1 console and maybe 5-6 games. They have Pacman, space invaders, Pong and a handful of more basic simple games. It was something to play after dinner for an hour with th ekids. See who could get the highest score in Pacman before the kids went to bed and the parents watched some TV.

In the current era because of the bullshit brand wars you need to buy 2-3 consoles to get all the games you want. If you don't have a PS2 you can't play Devil may cry, if you don't have a DS you can't play Mario kart. This just didn't happen back in the 80s.

The gaming culture has changed massively, it's like going "Oh the motor car era were you wore goggles and used hand signals to turn is exactly like todays traffic. Just yesterday I lost everything below the elbow because I tried to make a right turn on a main road!"

My parents run a local steam festival (or at least part of it) last year a group of gypos went in and stole a little boys pet dog and his pet ferrets (the ferrets were at the animal tent, so there for everyone to enjoy). Then they went around and stole loads of bikes and anything else they could carry.. If it wasn't for a drunken mob at the beer tent hitting them all in the face they would of got away with it.

There are good and bad in all, but I'm sad to say in the gypsy case the bad far outways the good. A lot of them are raised to think they are a minority (much like black women) except they have no stable ground of education to get out of that rut (unlike black women in most cases). So they just because thieves, crooks and general nasty people.

Convicted felons I won't go into.. I don't think that's fair because a convicted Felon could be anything from a single mum who had to steal a loaf of bread to feed her kids to a guy who's raped and mugged old ladies.

To stay on topic. My DNA should be mine and mine alone. If I'm a non-violent criminal who did nothing but hack a server or two then any DNA base just isn't going to help you. Plus if we get a nice evil government who enjoys polices and states.. Well having a complete record on me is rather nasty. I mean if we start with DNA why don't they take a sample of my sweat so they can automatically set tracker dogs on me if they ever suspect I've done something?

Sony only did well with the PS2 because of third party support. If the PS3 is so uber expensive (and ment to be difficult to work with), then they just won't get the support. The Wii on the other hand is a gamecube on crack, the prototype developers kits are add ons for the gamecube, so companies already have exprience with it.

Where as the IT industry just started to come of age. It started to mature in leaps and bounds, this won't stop untill we hit the peak where any more power is just pointless (photorealism all round). It's more or less like the old steam engines. A lot of people saw "improvements" all the time and went "Wow this has got to keep going! It'll never stop and I'll become super rich!" The same is happening now, and will continue to do so forever.

Bringing any such thing into a debate on science is like going into a bar full of football fans and going "Did you see the opera last night? Wasn't the dame just fantastic!?". No one there cares, you're talking crap to them and always will be.

Religion has over the years do a lot of harm to science and so everyone wants to keep it the hell away from it. I personally have no problem with religions, they teach some good things (Everyone is equal, act how you want others to act etc), but they also have some bad parts. These bad parts fill up the grey areas or turn people against each other for no reason at all and all of them say "believe because it's true, we just told you it's true so believe it". Which everyone will tell you is extremely dangerous.

Now I personally don't think we know everything and there is as much room for a God as there is for pink fuzzy dice. But untill I see some real evidence I'm not going to listen to crack pot theories like "Don't play with the cancer, it'll take your soul away" (even though I use the same excuse for avoiding having my picture taken). The post wasn't saying "We don't know what 2+2 is yet, so lets not try fucking with 2 okay?" the post is clearly saying "ZOMG YOU COULD LOSE YOUR SOUL!", but we have no evidence for or against a soul. It's just silly basicly.

One thing you have to remember with Slashdot is also a lot of the people here have never had any major problems. Some have been through hell and back, but there are a lot of college kids who have never had any problem beyond a bigger kid hitting them some times. They've never needed God, which is a major thing for religion. I mean when you're down and basicly fucked (lets say with cancer), you'll try anything to live. If that something is praying to fictional beings then you'll still give it a whirl, one day these people will be in need of some hope and they'll turn to religion just like many others have.

Religion is hope for the hopeless. A set of crutchs for the wounded and a basic survival tactic. There's nothing wrong with it, but you have to take it for what it is and not a cult where every rule must be followed to the letter. Never use it as a basis for anything science wise because it has very little science behind it.
