  5. Its lawful because they can go to the parliament to get the power to do it. It can be discreet and efficient because they can set themselves up to do it properly. Follow all the people who live in the house. Employ lock experts. Buy vehicles and brand themselves as electricians, whatever. Just walk in and do the job.

    Its partly because of our close relationship with the US. We have to keep track of terrorists living in Australia, and possibly migrating here.

    Most likely they will instrument your operating system or hardware in your absence so look at ways to keep it secure while you are away, or keep it with you at all times. Remember that they could log keystrokes with a simple device inserted into your machine.

    Along the lines of Siri but self contained. It would understand stuff like controlling the TV and the home security system. My mother could really use something like that and it doesn't have to be dumb either. You should be able to give it complex instructions in English and yeah it would be helpful if it could read lips.

    So what is a handset? How about a tablet running android? What if you attach a keyboard to it? Or a laptop running android? Seems a bit dumb to rule that out.

    The smartcard and gates cannot come soon enough.

    The smartcard tickets in Melbourne are difficult to get without a credit card. Police have an interface to track movement of individuals through the public transport system using identity information from the credit card purchases. Personally I paid for my ticket with cash but most people won't.

    K5 had a pretty good moderation system as well. Part of the problem may be that K5 had a notoriously high signal to noise ratio, compared to slashdot. Posting was slow and the site aimed for the high end of the market so to speak. As a result it had few members and when people started to leave it changed quickly.
