And then no oil company will work without having full insurance cover, and insurance companies will charge a gargantuan fortune to run that kind of risk, and the cost of fuel rises to compensate, and the price of your dinner goes up 4x or 5x every year. Congratulations, you've just destroyed society.

Society cannot run on oil forever. *Anything* that makes oil more expensive is a good thing, as it's pretty clear there are no more "easy" ways to get at oil (diminishing returns and all that) and we need to invest in alternative energy NOW while we still have the oil powering society to do so.

The sooner we're weaned off the near-dry teat of oil, the better.

    http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn14094-bacteria-make-major-evolutionary-shift-in-the-lab.html

And that's only in 20 years. Now multiply 20 years by 190,000,000 for how long life has been around on our planet. Add in constantly changing fitness conditions, vast amounts of energy input (solar), temperature gradients up the wazoo, and some of the most reactive molecules in the universe (O2, liquid H2O) being present in MASSIVE quantities (well, O2 later on) all at a temperature that makes such molecules possible (i.e. not 2000C), and you get life/evolution.

How could you NOT get life/evolution in those set of circumstances?

"A major evolutionary innovation has unfurled right in front of researchers' eyes. It's the first time evolution has been caught in the act of making such a rare and complex new trait.

And because the species in question is a bacterium, scientists have been able to replay history to show how this evolutionary novelty grew from the accumulation of unpredictable, chance events."

    Right, but which is larger?:

    a) Value of money "taken out of the system" as profits by traders
    b) Value gained by people who wanted to buy and sell stocks and were able to do so (instead of not being able to)

Essentially: How much value is liquidity worth?

I'd guess a > b, which means people would (on average) be better off not being able to buy or sell when they want to instead of being able to.
