One thing that someone in the biomedical industry told me is that the path that drug research usually takes is that a Phd candidate will do basic research at the university, carry this research with them to a small startup company, which is then acquired by a big pharmaceutical if one of their drugs looks promising, who then goes thought the FDA testing process and gets the drug to market.
According to her these marketing/research numbers that get thrown around don't include the costs of acquiring start-ups. Since it is pretty much impossible for a small company to afford to get a drug through the FDA approval process, their entire business model is to sell-up to the big phamaceuticals, either the entire company or individual drug patents. Therefore, this aquisition / patent license money funds an awful lot of research that doesn't get counted in the numbers.
So big drug companies are the RIAAs of the drug world: They don't actually create anything useful, they just exploit it for huge profit. Awesome.
Something as simple as where a product is on the shelf (eye level versus toward the ground, for example), or where your displays are in the store (in the back? at the entrance? How big are they?) is marketing, and it all costs money to do.
And never mind shinanigans related to updating the game (or virtual lack of ability in Nintendo's case).
I'm glad that's the case. Games need to be bug-free when the come out of the gate, not patched later. I can't remember a PS2 title that had any significant bugs out of the zillions I played.
"However, that does not solve the problem," Hellier said, because the planet's lifetime should still be very short and it would be very unlikely for his team to find it where it did.
Hey, very unlikely things happen. Not impossible by any stretch, and since we're such short-lived beings, we just see a snapshot. Maybe 10K years from now it'll get swallowed.
Yep, my parents were a Nielson family for about 2 years (about a year ago). What Parent described is exactly correct. They physically take apart ALL of your TVs/cable boxes to tap into them. Just crazy.
My HTC Magic runs just as snappily as my friend's iPhone. And that's with Google Maps, SIPdroid, GOogle Voice, and a ton of other shit running in the background. The G1 was a test concept.
I really, really like my HTC Magic through T-Mobile. Have VoIP, tethering, google voice, etc installed. Works great, nice interface, beautiful screen, etc. No complaints whatsoever.
Bottom line, MS really HAS given us a relatively free ride the last 7 years with XP, while Apple has released several paid upgrades in that time frame. No point in trying to dispute it.
You're comparing a "free ride" around the parking lot to a "free ride" to somewhere useful.
What new features has XP implemented since it came out? NEW features, not fixed ones that used to be broken. NEW. Because there are NEW features with every 10.x release on Macs.
OK, I'll bite. That sounds pretty damn interesting. Questions:
1) The game is 6 years old. Is it still very active? Do we need to worry about the game being "canceled"? 2) Are the only players left the hard-core players? Or are new people still joining in? 3) Looks like they're consolidating everyone to one server this month. Will this be a good or bad thing, in your opinion? 4) Is one of the empires way more popular than the others? Is there good balance? 5) What are the players like in each empires? Is one dominated by younger players, one older (ala WoW)?
Thanks for the info, I might have to check it out, especially if the "reserves" product is available for free.
I agree, it was not bad by any stretch of the imagination. Just not as amazing as I thought it would be. And yes, it is nice to a a major non-American movie. Shaun of the Dead anyone?
Autotranslation of the parent's sentence: "yes , i did to tell the truth of district 6 heard , and i did it also saw"
I saw it (with HUGE expectations) on Friday and I wasn't that impressed either. Don't get me wrong, I'd still give it a B+, but comparing it to the Matrix it's not even close. I remember leaving the theater after The Matrix and was completely gob-smacked. Not so with this movie.
You can really tell a lot of the dialogue was ad-libbed, and not in a good way.

People still go to stores? /i kid
No way, anything could be built into those laptops. Custom hardware, custom BIOS that would withstand a drive being erased, etc.

Double Double probably means 4 meat patties on the burger. Which is frightening. /american, but don't live within 1000 miles of an in-and-out
Good thing Slashdot is a European site...oh wait.
Well, I can say I was in a meeting the other day with a black guy and an asian woman. And I'm white.
Trifecta complete!

I have a TMobile MyTouch (HTC Magic). It has Exchange support. I use it on a daily basis.

reading ursula le guin, c. j. cherryh, octavia butler, dorris lessing, joanna rush, emma bull, oh and heck, anne mccaffrey.
Can you say "Young Adult Section"? I knew you could.
So are we now judging a book by its cover? Thanks but no thanks
It's much more like judging a book by a reading a select few passages.
They're showing content in the trailer. Not the same as a book cover, not by a long shot.
Angel is an excellent show, eh?
*vomits all over his keyboard*
Each of those Mac OSes has a new feature set. XP is the same as it was in 2002 + a ton of bugfixes.

What this guy said. Implants are the way to go if you have terrible teeth that are falling apart. Good luck getting insurance to cover it, though.

Mmmmm, hand-pulled beer. Beeeeeeeer.
My only exposure to Afrikaans was from "The Gods Must Be Crazy". :)

Oh come *on*. They named the movie "District 9" for christsakes. Ever heard of District 6?
Yeah, I'm sure it's not about apartheid. lol
