I had NO IDEA they were all written by the same guy! Amazing! Here it is 15 years later and The House of Stairs still makes me feel weird...man, talk about a trip down memory lane!

I actually made an Interstellar Pig game based on the one in the book...and actually played it with some of my friends! Good times, good times.

I know this is an insensitive thing to ask, but did your conversion to Christianity closely follow some kind of traumatic event/time in your life? Almost every Christian I've met who did not have strong faith (or had no faith) as a child and converted after they reached adulthood were ex-drug addicts, or survived a horrific accident/disease, ended up in jail and found God, etc.

It seems to me that the only time Christianity (or religion in general) is ever considered a logical, palletable option after reaching adulthood is when you're psyche is so out of whack that up is down and left is right (not trying to be insulting). Is that the case with you, or did you come to Christianity without being "baptized by fire", so to speak?

You're saying that Canada has been collecting the DNA of every newborn in the country, sequencing it, and then putting it in some giant database for later searches? Or that they collect a DNA sample and then store the physical sample (sans the sequencing/database part)? Just looking for details, because that sounds crazy!

  15. Re:Motivated Youth on Teen Hacks $84 Million Porn Filter in 30 Minutes · · Score: 2, Interesting

Personally I quit teh pr0n because I eventually ended up having incredibly screwed up thoughts run through my head, the kind of stuffs rapists are made out of. =P So don't tell me there's nothing wrong with it, I know first hand what can happen to kids if you put strange/sexually violent thoughts in to their heads. On the other hand, I had parents who entirelly supressed all that kind of stuff, and I ended up associating sex with sin and darkness and bad and such, so it's no suprise that when I couldn't help but obey my nature that it all came out skewed. So for a solid three months, as an eighteen year old male teenager, I willingly supressed every sexual thought I had, until I decided I had the will to maintain I healthy balance. Now I'm fine, for the most part. So you're blaming porn for your fucked up thoughts, instead of your parents doing a piss-poor job of teaching you about sex? The (probable) reason "teh pr0n" made you have dark/rape sex fantasies is because your parents totally fucked up your understanding of sex.

Non-fucked up understanding of sex + porn = normal person, masturbation, quick physical release
Repressed, fucked up understanding of sex + porn = probably fucked up person in terms of sexuality, hangups, fear, etc

Only one variable has been changed on the left side of the equation. Hint: it's not porn. Call your parents and thank them for putting you through that hellish period when you were 18. It's their fault.

BTW, I speak from experience; my wife had a similar Christian upbringing (if you tell me your parents aren't Born Again, I'll be very surprised), and it took her quite a while to work out most of her sex hangups. It still makes her feel weird/dirty sometimes, all because of her parents' inability/lack of maturity when it came to an uncomfortable topic: talking to your kids about sex.

The smaller audience size for the channels I want might mean I end up paying more per month than I do now. Got it? That's exactly what I meant, except I'm being more pessimistic. I was saying that there may not even be enough people who would order a channel under the ala carte system to keep it afloat. I wouldn't mind paying more for SciFi (or another much-less-popular-than-ESPN channel), I just hope it still exists after ala carte goes mainstream.
  17. Careful what you wish for... on FCC Head Supports Ala Carte Cable · · Score: 1

Why do I need to pay for others to have 50 sport channels? The SciFi (et al) channel works just fine for me, I don't want to have ESPN; which by talking to the cable companies is one of the most expenive "free" channels out there. As much as I wish it weren't true, there are waaaay more cable customers who want ESPN than want SciFi.

I always think ala carte is a great idea until I think about which channels will fail because of losing subsidization. I want more SciFi/History/Documentaries, not more reality TV and crap for "the masses" (or as my wife affectionately calls them, "yellow mustard" folk). Yes, I am an elitist bastard.

Us kids were invited one by one to touch the other side of the tile with our hand, which was room-temperature (or maybe *slightly* warm) to the touch. I do remember they guy saying not to *push* on the tile at all, just feel it, so maybe they do break really easily. Or maybe this was an older type of tile than the ones they use now? Just thought I'd mention it.
