That actually made Law & Order one night. I guess either the show writers couldn't come up with their own material / couldn't expect viewers to watch unless they saw something topical.

Some small aspect of the plot had to do with a store owner requiring a license to sell video game consoles. Back at the office, the old Texan guy says something like, "Guess they wanna keep Osama Bin Laden from playing Grand Theft Auto."

Yeah, that's what I meant by 60 fps per scan. One odd or even line scan every 1/60th of a second. You get the illusion of about 60 fps because one 29.97 frame contains both information for the current field (odd), and the next field (even) and being able to see it sequentially through interlacing. Regardless, game consoles still need to render at 60 fps, as all frames need to be there to be broken down to two different fields in a single 29.97 frame.

As for upsampling anything, there is nothing to be gained. Upmixing a 128kbps MP3 to 320kbps will not gain you anything, nor will upsampling NTSC video to 35mm film, unless for the purpose of using the wide aspect ratio to your advantage. You might add a little film grain, but that's still disputable as to whether it's a good quality or a form of artifacting. (e.g. the Citizen Kane DVD being possibly too clean after conversion)

I have no problems watching it on a smaller screen, especially after you realize most of the video was upsampled from NTSC video to film print. (Were the parts where Moore was walking around filmed?) Esentially a drop in quality in the sense that you drop from 60fps (per scan) to 24fps.

Also, there's that whole thing about me being stationed overseas. No chance of seeing at the base theater, EVER, for obvious reasons.

I live in rural Japan. People here are almost as dependent on cars as Americans are. Cars on the local market aren't cheap, either (but are cheap as hell if you can buy a used one from a US servicemember, my '96 Toyota in excellent condition cost $2000). Probably half of the cars here are 3-cylinder because the taxes on them aren't nearly as steep as something larger. Only difference in the roads are that they accomodate for bike riders and pedestrians in the form of steep curbs, barriers (like you might see on bridges in the US, only on level roads), and well marked crosswalks.

If you're talking about going long distances though, I believe the toll roads are actually more expensive than a train trip, which is quite expensive itself.

Although I have no firsthand information about it, the comments I usually saw about it showed that it was outperformed by the Geforce4 Ti 4600. It also seems to be the OEM card of choice. Previous cards I usually saw in OEMs included the Geforce2 MX and RIVA TNT2 M64, which were also budget cards.

It's probably true that the performance of the 5200 wasn't neutered as much as it was the case in earlier generation. I don't really think there's anything "wrong" with the 5200, but I very much disliked the TNT2 M64, especially when I saw it get outperformed by my Voodoo 1 (in games that weren't 3dfx biased, like Unreal).

If I turn out to be right about the performance, perhaps the price for a GeForce4 Ti 4600 is less?

It does need to be mentioned that this looks like a quite effort to apply 2D windows to a flat plane rendered in 3D. 3D could possibly look quite nice on the desktop. Hopefully soon, graphical artists will figure out how to make widgets that look good in 3D (while being 3D themselves). If it's 3D, it only makes sense that the things you click on have some dimension to them.

It seems the usual OEM tactic is to put together a really fast-looking PC and then put a Pic N' Save version of a current generation video card in - one that will be outperformed by a previous generation card that costs less and has more features. A lot of the Dells I've seen recently had GeForce FX 5200s in them, for example.

Several years ago, it used to that Celeronswere known for their great overclocking capability, although I doubt that's as much the case anymore. When you could get a 20% speed boost, it was worth it. Now, it seems to be more economical to just buy a higher rated processor than to spend even more money on a water cooling system, since that's the kind of effort it takes.

Just a nitpick, actually. Typical HDTV is 1080i, 1080 lines interlaced, displaying 540 of the even, then odd, every 1/60th of a second. So interlacing is still around, but quite fine and less noticable. Even fine text is still large enough to have important parts of letters rendered on more than one scanline so you don't see flicker much.
