Theres more than just the road lines. You have reflectors at the road side, you also have the visual differences between road and shoulder and ditch to detect. In winter the demarcation of road vs. snow in the ditch is visually detectable. Now, drift detection will be harder, I would probably agree with a system that kicked to manual mode if snowdrifts are detected in the roadway. Heavy rain could be a problem with visual AND radar systems, possibly necessitating a fallback to manual as well.

What frustrates me most of all is that the biggest hurdle stopping self driving cars is the damn lawyers who are salivating at suing the first self driving car manufacture who has a problem, even though technology like this would virtually eliminate distracted driving completely.
I think theres a very good chance that the one of the four that gets completely cut could easily end up getting bought out by one of the others in order to get access to some of the developed technology.
Specifically, I'd look for Boeing to buy the odd company out in this situation. Yes, that means I think there's no chance Boeing would be the odd company out.

Just to point to a counter example. Greece would prefer to stick with its liberal policies and continue spending government money it doesn't have. In this case, and I am not claiming that this is true in all cases, reality has a decidedly conservative bias. Greece needs to make heavily conservative moves with respect to their government spending or they are doomed. And no, the liberal "raise taxes" move isn't going to work, either.

Due diligence isn't just a cool sounding term. If you're an investor you've got to assume they're painting a rosy picture to try an convince people to invest. It's your responsibility to figure out if the story is too good to be true.
As trivial as it was to figure out that the Facebook IPO was a ruse, these plaintiffs deserve to have their case thrown out of court.
