New Rule: Any story trumpeting the latest security hole for OS X must include actual measurement data reporting the number of machines being infected out there on the net. Not hypothetical bullshit from some "security expert" with an axe to grind. Back up your "news" with real data. This is just speculation by heise.de.
So how many systems have been compromised as a result of this flawed firewall? My guess is zero. Let us know when the number of compromised OS X macs in the wild reaches.01% of the number of compromised windows boxes corralled by botnet herders.
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.
Pollan points out the corn -> cheap calories -> obesity link in the article. He also criticizes nutritionism, which is in abundant supply in the replies to this post. His book,
The Omnivore's Dilemma, is a good read, and quite relevant to the discussion.
As for the posts below which respond with "yes, warmer in the age of the dinosaurs", well, there's a reason why Greenland was named Greenland. It was green, merely a few centuries ago.
Utter nonsense. Ice core data show the Greenland ice sheet is more than 100,000 years old. Get your facts straight.
Here's one problem with warmer temps you don't mention - pests. Warm-weather pests, including agricultural pests, will increase in number in a warmer climate. It is entirely unclear that warmer weather is a net benefit in previously cooler climes.
There is no discrepancy. Senator Inhofe assembles a list of crackpots with PhD's. It proves nothing. Have any of these scientists published a paper on climate change? One can find denialists of the theory of gravity, or quantum mechanics. Science is not an opinion poll. There is no controversy in the published literature on climate science. Oreskes surveyed the climate change literature here. She found that out of 928 peer-reviewed papers on climate change, not one disagreed with the consensus position.
What standard of proof would convince you? How much evidence do you want? There are mountains of evidence to support the consensus view that the earth is warming, and humans are the cause.
Would you be willing to accept a $1000 wager that GISTEMP will keep increasing? I would gladly wager this sum.
Look at the list of scientific societies on this page. That represents the consensus of tens of thousands of scientists around the globe.
Discovery of oil fields peaked in 1964 (some say 1962) and has been declining since. The last new refinery was built 29 years ago in the US. If all this oil production is going to come online, the oil companies had better ramp up their refining capacity, right? Why aren't they building new refineries?
I'm a scientist. If you want the straight dope on climate science, just visit realclimate.org. It's a site maintained by real climate scientists, expert in the science behind global warming. Global warming denialism is only interesting from a psychological viewpoint to me.
I can't visit the linked article, the telegraph website appears slashdotted. I will point out that NOAA, NASA, the American Institute of Physics, the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society, the Royal Society of the UK, as well as many other scientific societies (http://illconsidered.blogspot.com/2006/02/global- warming-is-just-hoax.html) have all issued statements that a) global warming is real, and b) humans are the cause. Maybe one journalist knows something that has slipped by tens of thousands of scientists, but I seriously doubt it. Slashdot might be able to generate ad revenue by visiting this topic, but it won't advance the state of human knowledge.
The article is published in the Chicago Sun Times. It mentions Joliet. There is no Joliet in NJ AFAICT. There is a Plainfield, Illinois which is contiguous to Joliet, Illinois.
You say it is a "fact" that Mars is warming up. Can you be more specific? What's the heating rate? Can you direct me to the data?
You read that they "simply delete" posts? can you be more specific, please?
What about these other objects in the solar system. Do they have names? What is their rate of heating? Are these data published in the scientific literature?
Denialism is a funny thing. People deny that global warming is occurring. Yet the same people who deny GW probably believe the weather reports from NOAA, put out by some of the same scientists who tell us global warming is real (predicting the weather is not the same as predicting climate change, BTW). But the basic principles, the underlying science is the same. I'm a scientist (PhD, physics), I've examined the evidence, and I believe global warming is real. Spread the word. RealClimate is an excellent source of information. Conflating RC with the Catholic Church is ridiculous in the extreme. They have almost nothing in common. Learn about how science is done. A good reference on this topic is the book "Why People Believe Weird Things." They should have a copy at your local library or bookstore.
We ignore Global Climate Change at our own peril. Perhaps our children and their children will curse our stupidity and arrogance. Perhaps millions upon millions will suffer needlessly. We're perfoming the biggest experiment in history, and we're living in the laboratory. Denialists tell us not to worry, just keep turning the key in that SUV. That's irresponsible and just plain stupid, IMHO. Good luck, Humanity!
Zombie networks of windows machines are a huge problem, often being used to DOS and blackmail prominent websites. What steps are being taken by Microsoft to prevent windows machines from becoming zombies?
Amazing. I've just read four or five comments on launchd from people diminishing how boot time has been decreased (by roughly an order of magnitude, it seems) by Apple. How would you like a car that took two minutes to "boot?" Resistance to change seems to be human nature to some. The arrogance is so palpable one could cut it with a knife.
My debian linux firewall/gateway box has been booting with runit as process 1 for years. Most of the "services" on the box are controlled by runit/daemontools. It has worked flawlessly for me. launchd seems to extend this paradigm very elegantly. I welcome launchd with open arms, and I hope a debian package is available at some point. BTW, 10.4 server is using lanchd, too. This is not just for desktops.
Think about all the customers who will boot their new mac and be amazed by the quick startup. Seems like Apple has their priorities straight. It's hard for me to see a downside to faster boot. Perhaps the more anxiety-prone will wonder if something is wrong?
2,500 people is not enough to be an adequate sample of Americans
Written by someone who apparently has no concept of sampling. An unbiased sample size of 2,500 is more than large enough to derive meaningful information from a much larger population. We heard similar nonsense from the right wing when they were opposed to the use of sampling in the 2000 US census (the true motive was political; an accurate census would have an adverse affect on their gerrymandering). The randomness of the sampling is what matters. Given an unbiased sampling, the size of the sample determines the uncertainty of the result. The errors do not depend on the population size!
There are some nice jave applets which demonstracte sampling, google if you are curious. Or find a copy of "The Cartoon Guide To Statistics" and read ch. 6.
Nice ad hominem. Do you disagree with anything specific in the UCS report? Please quote the items you disagree with. Kurt Gottfried is no slouch, and I don't think he's for sale. This report carries some weight. It's about time that scientists spoke out about this issue. Your post is typical right-wing BS, demonize and marginalize, but don't speak to the facts. Debate is a lost art in this day and age.
Speaking as a scientist (PhD, physics), I think that the Bush administration has an agenda, that they politicize science, and that they pick and choose the results that agree with their agenda. Marburger is just a mouthpiece, he probably gets his talking points straight from Karl Rove (pure conjecture on my part). This is really nothing new. I hope the American Physical Society gets behind this. The truth will eventually come out, but it might take years.
Yes, and a Ferrari is faster than a Ford Focus, but you can use either one to go to store and pick up groceries or drive around town. Benchmarks are boring. Who care which chip is "faster?" Benchmarks are most useful for misleading the gullible, and they make for a great pissing contest, if you're into pissing contests.
I ran linux on a 300 MHz PII with an 8 MB ATI video card, and it was more than adequate for coding, reading email, chatting, etc. I'd love to have a G5 or any of those other systems tested, but I could never justify the expenditure for what I'm doing with a puter nowadays.
This is susceptible to fraud. All it takes is "hand in your votes for John Q. Senator and I'll give you $20." So I'm not sure allowing the voter to keep a record of his vote is a good idea.
It seems as if the company can do no wrong in your eyes. Is the onus of moral behavior always on the employee? How bad does the company's behavior have to become before the employees are justified in walking out? When does the word get out that the company was screwing the employees? Workers have the right to organize in the US, and in many situations it behooves them to organize.
... most people ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS: If you made me listen through your bloody inane message,...
Most (all?) answering machines allow the announcement to be stopped and go straight to record mode when you press the # key. Most voicemail systems do, also.
It seems to me that most of the participants in this discussion are ignoring the elephant in the room. Does a software EULA have any import? It's my understanding that no EULA has ever been held up in court. They're just a scare tactic, as this page seems to indicate. So I can mod my XBox out the wazoo and M$oft can do nothing about it.

scientists have decoded the genome of the bubonic plague bacterium. This will now (hopefully soon) lead to vaccinations and treatments for the disease it causes.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this one of the big fallacies of genetic research, oft propagated by gullible journalists, i.e. the implicit assumption that now that we have "decoded" the genetic makeup of some disease organism we are able to effect a cure? Isn't it also true that knowing which gene in the human body is responsible for a particular illness/condition does not necessarily mean we can cure the condition? As an example, we've known the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis for 20 some years, yet there is no cure.
