  1. Re:In our lifetimes... on AI Movie Promo · · Score: 2

I know it's completely OT, but I have to say something about "Our Lady Peace's" 'Spiritual Machines' album. It's based on the Ray Kurzweil book and is truly great. Rarely do you see such an ambitious work as an album based on a book that holds together so well and can actually stand on its own, although bettered by the combination of the two.

The album actually has excerpts of Kurzweil reading from the book. Check out "Life", my favourite track of the last year.

I couldn't find the appropriate timing or wording to say what you have just said, but you my friend have hit the nail on the head. We're not really a community, we just all love to shoot the shit about the geeky crap that we like, be it Star Wars, Linux, or any of the other crap that we have in common.

That certainly doesn't mean that everyone posting here, editors included must take all of the words that are said here (over and over) as scripture. If that were the case I'd have a goatse.cx poster (which I don't) hanging over my bed.

Hell, I'm not even a Linux user, although I respect the community and will probably switch as soon as I can use cakewalk or cubase and other audio software which I find indispensible.

This would involve putting into place some kind of controlling body to stop any Joe from saying, "Yeah, I'm Bono, it's ok to put 'All I Want Is You' on Napster." How would they go about confirming that a track that I've written is really being represented by me? It could turn into an interesting registration system, or it could be a free for all.\

  6. I know I'm not the average Napster user. on RIAA Wants Opt-In Filtering For Napster · · Score: 2

I make my music available over Napster. No record companies, just sharing with interested individuals. This is an entirely legal use of Napster that would be quashed by this action. How do I go about "registering" my files as freely available. I'd much rather just make them freely available.

I also use Napster to find the things I can't get in record stores. Live stuff, music out of print, music that was never "officially" released. The majority of it not available for sale through any venue. Where's the stealing there? These songs also would beco0me unavailable to me through Napster.

Back to IRC......just like the old days I suppose, before all the silly kids jumped on the bandwagon.

  13. Ads on /. on Salon Sans Ads, For A Price · · Score: 2

I think that the main thing to consider about trying something like this on /. is the nature of the site. We have a much more community oriented feel on this site and I think people feel in the back of their heads that it's about community (whether it is or not). Offering a subscription is fine for Salon, they are obviously a money-making venture, paying writers, and making some coin.

Whether /. is profitable or not, it doesn't feel like a for-profit venture and I think that offering subscriptions would take away from that. On the other hand, asking nicely for patronage through a paypal system or something similar allows /. to keep the non-corporate feel.

Either way you think the toys are too expensive because it isn't a 2.99 GI Joe or you just think toys toys and that kind of marketing are a waste of time.

ACtually the opposite could be true. The companies like the tobacco and booze companies already have the infrastructure and in some cases the equipment that would be needed to sell Marijuana as a consumer product. If the government threw on a couple hidden taxes and licensed some "dealers" everybody's happy. Even the quality of the marijuana would go up and you'd never have to be afraid of buying weed laced with heroin or speed.......

"Music" is the emotion expressed and conveyed in song. Sound quality only enters into that equation as far as enabling the expression.

Don't get me wrong, I love to hear my music in decent quality, but I don't hold it against the music when the quality isn't there.

Hey Pedro, I like your definition of art. I agree entirely and also agree that code can be art.

Another defining fact about art is that it is subjective, really only art to those who can appreciate it. Just like not everyone can "get" good jazz, not everyone will see the art in code. It's a expression that can sometimes have grace and sometimes be very rough-edged, but it takes someone who can actually read it to appreciate it.
