I know it's completely OT, but I have to say something about "Our Lady Peace's" 'Spiritual Machines' album. It's based on the Ray Kurzweil book and is truly great. Rarely do you see such an ambitious work as an album based on a book that holds together so well and can actually stand on its own, although bettered by the combination of the two.
The album actually has excerpts of Kurzweil reading from the book. Check out "Life", my favourite track of the last year.
I couldn't find the appropriate timing or wording to say what you have just said, but you my friend have hit the nail on the head. We're not really a community, we just all love to shoot the shit about the geeky crap that we like, be it Star Wars, Linux, or any of the other crap that we have in common.
That certainly doesn't mean that everyone posting here, editors included must take all of the words that are said here (over and over) as scripture. If that were the case I'd have a goatse.cx poster (which I don't) hanging over my bed.
Hell, I'm not even a Linux user, although I respect the community and will probably switch as soon as I can use cakewalk or cubase and other audio software which I find indispensible.
This would involve putting into place some kind of controlling body to stop any Joe from saying, "Yeah, I'm Bono, it's ok to put 'All I Want Is You' on Napster." How would they go about confirming that a track that I've written is really being represented by me? It could turn into an interesting registration system, or it could be a free for all.\
I make my music available over Napster. No record companies, just sharing with interested individuals. This is an entirely legal use of Napster that would be quashed by this action. How do I go about "registering" my files as freely available. I'd much rather just make them freely available.
I also use Napster to find the things I can't get in record stores. Live stuff, music out of print, music that was never "officially" released. The majority of it not available for sale through any venue. Where's the stealing there? These songs also would beco0me unavailable to me through Napster.
Back to IRC......just like the old days I suppose, before all the silly kids jumped on the bandwagon.
Does anyone have an informed answer on how this phrase should most properly be represented by the written word? I've seen both written on different occasions and it really bugs the nitpicker in me to not know.
It's always seemed to me to be a sure sign of intelligence when someone openly admits to a lack of knowledge or informed opinion. Sometimes it's nice to have someone say, "Wait, start from the beginning, this is important, I want to get it all."
If all of the other alternatives are so wonderful, please take this opportunity to leave. We'll miss you friend, but I suppose this is how it has to be. Go off into the night and blaze for us a new path.
It is my understanding from reading the previous posts that "omnivorous" was meant to be a broad term. I took it as a suggestion that this is one of the many highly adaptable traits that we have as humans. We can eat whatever we feel like and thrive.
So eat your vegetables and enjoy. I'm going to tuck into a nice steak, thanks.
I think that the main thing to consider about trying something like this on/. is the nature of the site. We have a much more community oriented feel on this site and I think people feel in the back of their heads that it's about community (whether it is or not). Offering a subscription is fine for Salon, they are obviously a money-making venture, paying writers, and making some coin.
Whether/. is profitable or not, it doesn't feel like a for-profit venture and I think that offering subscriptions would take away from that. On the other hand, asking nicely for patronage through a paypal system or something similar allows/. to keep the non-corporate feel.
lol, my computer monitor is way bigger than the tv at my house and the position that it's in on my desk takes only a quick swing and it's very convenient for watching from the couch. I had the keyboard over there with the mouse on the coffee table, but I was getting way too lazy.
Apparently you misunderstood the above comment. LDC is not playing Anakin. THat honour has been bestowed upon a Canadian actor by the name of Hayden Christiansen. He's a relatively new actor and has only made one feature if I recall correctly.
I think the whining about the marketing is that our parents bought us the toys back then. Now we have to buy them for ourselves or not have them. Either way you think the toys are too expensive because it isn't a 2.99 GI Joe or you just think toys toys and that kind of marketing are a waste of time.
My understanding is that it's Obi-Wan who fights Jango, in a rain scene. The fight that I haven't heard anything about is the Mace Windu one.......curious that.
ACtually the opposite could be true. The companies like the tobacco and booze companies already have the infrastructure and in some cases the equipment that would be needed to sell Marijuana as a consumer product. If the government threw on a couple hidden taxes and licensed some "dealers" everybody's happy. Even the quality of the marijuana would go up and you'd never have to be afraid of buying weed laced with heroin or speed.......
Actually music history class. Ives was a turn of the century composer who moved into "experimental" music towardthe end of his career. Not my thing at all......but I get what you're saying.
Hey Pedro, I like your definition of art. I agree entirely and also agree that code can be art.
Another defining fact about art is that it is subjective, really only art to those who can appreciate it. Just like not everyone can "get" good jazz, not everyone will see the art in code. It's a expression that can sometimes have grace and sometimes be very rough-edged, but it takes someone who can actually read it to appreciate it.
Get real my friend. Whose fault is it that the popular media and pop culture in general doesn't understand us? I have no responsibility to explain myself and anyone else who feels that if they make something work in a nonconventional manner to the mindless masses. Thank god there still is a digital divide, thank god I'm on this side of it.
I can understand if organized religion leaves a bad taste in you mouth brother.
Perhaps you could just abstain like the rest of us intelligent folk rather than burn the church. It goes along with the fact that you just can't kill dumb people.......you just ahve to smile at them and know that they'll take care of it.
Please note that perhaps you don't understand what you're really saying. There has been a rash of church burnings in the deep south, to my recollection most of them were the churches of blacks. Your.sig is lumping you in with this somewhat.
The name "troll" comes from a poster who is (follow me here) "trolling" for a response. You have just successfully trolled with your post byu garnering these responses. Nice work.
Goatse.cx and AYBABTU posts aren't really trolls, unless they're damn clever ones. They're just annoying.

Again, thank you Ed.
my bad
I know what the different words mean, but thank you for taking the time to look at the dictionary.
Still doesn't really answer the question, particularly because the gentleman in the thread below this linked to a definition of the other word.

You mean the Russians have done something other than starve and develop a kick-ass mafia since the breakup of the USSR? I had no idea.
They're not looking for donations, they're looking for subscriptions. A big difference.

"Music" is the emotion expressed and conveyed in song. Sound quality only enters into that equation as far as enabling the expression.
Don't get me wrong, I love to hear my music in decent quality, but I don't hold it against the music when the quality isn't there.
