I think we all have become too comfortable in our collective knowledge of the solar system. The only problem is we don't really know that much at all. A lot of Astronomy 101 textbooks are going to be re-written in the next couple of decades.

I don't think the logos aren't similar enough to prove an infringement of trademark, especially international. This is going to be a big waste of money and time for Apple. Why attack Aussie businesses with fruity logos anyway? Don't they have anything better to do? Like, maybe fix the iMac "Big Yellow Line" display problems.

I think this poster was trying to point out that in some cases smoking kills people. Where's the logic in paying high taxes on a product that has no lasting benefit to your health, family, etc.? A cigarette gives a few moments of weak pleasure. Is it really worth your money and health? (BTW, I just started again, so I'm not some high-and-mighty jerk who's above taking a drag off a smoke now and then. I just think this poster was trying to help people understand that death from smoking is real and it does suck)

    4. The stupid people squander the millions on cars, planes, boats, houses, fine dining, whores, and cocaine.
    5. The smart people get laid off or fired and are left to go suck up to the next group of dumb people with money in order to support their families.
    6. The stupid people repeat the cycle using their friend's money because they now have a track record of "generating millions/billions in income".

So who's really dumb and who's really smart? Is it the prostitute or the patron?

  8. Productivity. on The Duct Tape Programmer · · Score: 1

From 20+ years experience I can confirm that my personal productivity is greater when developing in "Anarchy" mode. When I work on a team that employs rigid methodologies I find that development output slows down significantly and that the resulting software is of no greater quality for the extra time spent building it. I also find that creativity is greatly reduced, and in many cases, devalued completely when using cookie-cutter techniques. This observation doesn't mean I don't see the value of discipline or patterns, but do I think programmers need to balance creativity and organization. It is the balance between power and control that allows something to navigate at high velocities. I suppose the same could be said for programming.

Good coders get canned all the time. Often it's because they have and exercise integrity which equates to shitting on the kitchen floor in today's corporate environments. The advice in the article is entertaining but probably not practical. If you're on the chopping block there is little you can do to mitigate the outcome. It really depends on your *perceived* value to the organization. People are too smart and narcissistic to change their perception of you based on your bragging. Bragging used to work back when most people with power in an organization had absolutely no idea about technology. If I walk into work and start bragging about my work and skills today, my peers and superiors are just going to be annoyed and think I'm a jerk. Bragging about the team's successes, and how the current team is a cohesive unit, is better advice that may save not only your butt, but your entire team's as well.

  13. "You don't need million dollars to do nothing." on Who Wants To Be a Billionaire Coder? · · Score: 1

If I had a huge fortune I would continue to develop software, but I'd probably pay younger folks to code. After you've written a few zillion lines of code the practice becomes trivial and modern tools are just boring to use. It's the design and the creative aspects that really light me up these days. I think it is also wise for people to share their wealth with open source developers. A lot of these cats get very little reward for their work. I make it a point to click the PayPal donate button whenever I download something useful. If I had a billion quid I would donate a whole lot more to the open source community.

  14. Social Networks & Social Engineering on Security / Privacy Advice? · · Score: 1

Social networks are dangerous to secure organizations because they facilitate the very old and effective practice of social engineering. For example, one could use social networking sites to identify a person who works for a target organization, and then case or befriend that person to manipulate them, steal their identity, access rights, or even their entire computer. The most effective security is when people can't ascertain your employee's professional and personal associations. A skilled social engineer can do significant damage with basic information found on twitter, facebook, etc. Also, in my experience, low-tech threats like physical access, dumpster diving, bugging, and social engineering are far more effective and damaging than purely software and network-related security problems. Imagine how much trouble a disgruntled employee could cause with a bug in the boardroom.

Because their political ideals are closer than one would expect. Go read up on nazism, and fascism. You'll see the similarities these ways of thinking have with Obama's "progressive" initiatives. There is a form of governing called the "Third way" that Bill Clinton made famous, but is actually a well-known facet of fascism and Obama is practicing it everyday. Americans are too high, stupid, and brainwashed through academia, to realize that their nation is falling into really dark territory. I don't think Obama is a evil person like Hitler obviously was, but they share startling political traits. Look it up. I really noticed the similarities after I saw an video Obama ran in classrooms asking children to pledge themselves to Obama. Not to the President, or to the U.S., but to Obama. The video has his logo in it but no presidential seal. It reminded me of Nazi Germany when Hitler ran the exact same campaign to indoctrinate Nazi youth - except the symbol was a swastika.
