Reuters calls the criminals 'hackers,' further besmirching the once-revered title.
Get over it. Seriously. This romanticism for some obscure meaning of a word being understood by the general public is really getting tiresome. Words can have multiple meanings depending on the context and hacker is no different. We just have to live with it. There's no way to change the meaning of the word in the public consciousness without some type of huge marketing campaign. Saying you are a Perl hacker is going to be interpreted the way you want by the audience you are targeting with that phrase. If someone thinks you are breaking the security of Perl then they probably don't know what Perl is and aren't the audience for your use of that word. Likewise, when I talk about forking and killing children I'm not talking about murdering babies (contrary to what the marketing woman thought, whose office was near my cube, when she reported me and my co-worker to HR 10 years ago).
I find it hard to believe that any email programs would be irresponsible enough to display active content in what is essentially a push medium. If your mail client can display anything beyond basic HTML, be it processing JavaScript or rendering Flash or ActiveX, I would highly recommend you turn those settings off. Better yet, I would recommend finding a safer mail client as executing this content would show they don't care about (or don't know about) security.
Once again NoScript helps out here since it can block Flash. I don't run Flash on any pages that don't absolutely require it, and I find few that do. Flashblock is another option for Firefox users that only want to block Flash and nothing else. Browse safely everyone.
The first woman I see mouth the words "NO!" when some cowardly dork proposes to her in front of thousands of strangers is the woman I'll divorce my wife for.
Don't forget that not everyone has perfect eyesight. Although screens might display at a higher resolution I have to increase my font size so that I can still read everything. My laptop screen's native resolution is 1400x1050 which I have to keep it at so that the picture isn't blurry. Because of my vision problems I set my terminal font to 15 points and that's right on the cusp of being too small. I get 137 columns in my terminal with that setting. Even so, when I am going to spend a lot of time coding I increase the size to 16 or 18 points first.
One of the nice things about the 80 character limit is that when people adhere to that limit I can reduce my font size slightly and display two files side by side for comparison.
Except that isn't alone the definition - as I understand it, this was a term introduced by the OSI, and not one which preexisted. Whether they have a legal right to enforce it depends on trademark law, but I don't think it's right for companies to use false or misleading advertising, by trying to pretend a term applies to their software, when it doesn't.
They have no legal right to enforce it because they currently do not have a trademark on the phrase "open source". That could change if they apply and make their case. I hope they do. But in the mean time it's just two words and what those words mean will continue to evolve as human language is used.
Because anybody with a clue is using VoIP by this point, these terms basically mean their $10 DSL costs $35 (=$10 for DSL + $25 for worthless phone service) PLUS the amortized cost of installation and the effective cost of an illiquid 1-2 year contract.
$35 for net access is pretty cheap. I have a basic land line and it's $17 a month with all the taxes and fees. So it would be $27 for net access where I am. That sounds like a deal. Have you seen how much DSL without a phone connection costs? It's at least $80 from what I was able to find. Who cares about the contract. Are you changing providers every month?
Stop kidnapping our citizens and send them to Guantanamo for no good reason.
Why didn't your country protest your citizen being detained? Why did your country not cut off trade with the US? Are you too addicted to Levi's and American movies and TV shows to stand up and cut the US off?
Stop keeping "secret" prisons in our countries.
Why are you allowing the US to keep prisons in your country? Or military bases for that matter? It's YOUR country. Arrest them or kick them out.
I don't agree with all the US does but don't act like you're helpless. Your countries need to stop tolerating these things you complain about.
My favorite ad was the one for logitech with the peeing baby. It was a two page ad with a baby on the left side in diapers with the caption "Feels good." On the right was a smiling baby, naked and peeing into the air. His caption read, "Feels better."
Who's to say that Apple can't/won't write that killer app?
You might be right but other people might be able to see something that Apple can't. The article brings up the Mac as a point of comparison. MacPaint was neat but Photoshop was one of the apps that made the Mac a must-have platform, and Photoshop didn't come from Apple.
After suffering a total hard drive failure, I tried to obtain a factory-restore CD from IBM (this was before they sold the PC business to Lenovo). They told me I couldn't have one without paying because *Microsoft* forbids them from giving them away.
I guess it depends on who you get on the phone. I bought a Thinkpad T30 about four years ago. I was annoyed when I opened the box and there weren't any restore CDs. When I called IBM support and complained the support guy said they would mail me a restore CD set right away. I got a package with the three CDs a few days later.
It is an excellent solution. Your post leaves me with the impression that you don't know what NoScript is. NoScript is a Firefox extension that allows a user to selectively enable JavaScript for web sites.
If we continue down that line of thought we end up at the point where we just go back to static pages with no scripting.
I already do that. I only have JavaScript enabled for about 20 web sites. I've found out that I'm not missing anything as most web sites function perfectly without JavaScript enabled. If there's a site that just has to have JavaScript to work then I can click a button in the status bar to temporarily allow it for that domain for that browsing session.
Especially when you're developing exploits for a machine. You can time them so they hit the market a day after patch, so you have a guaranteed full month before your exploit gets a fix.
people like Fred Wilson and Donald E. Knuth i think are really just covering for a desire to be less social.
Or maybe more social. I know that I use email less and less, preferring to use the phone or face-to-face communication. I actively encourage people to call me or meet up rather than email me.
Where does the RIAA think the money is going to come from. Its not like web radio is making money hand over fist. Even the best web radio stations are struggling to survive under the current conditions, much less their future ridiculous rates.
It's not about the money, it's about the market. Driving independent radio stations out of business is the entire reason for this mess in the first place. The mainstream music industry is desperately trying to retain control over not only their business model but their methods of marketing and promotion of their musical interests. They pretty much have over-the-air radio marketing only their products; however, online radio provides more choice and allows listeners to explore different genres and artists. Sites like Last.fm and Pandora present even more of a threat because they allow listeners to directly control what they are exposed to and direct their own musical exploration, unlike regular streaming radio which spoon feeds you whatever they have (not that I dislike anything somafm spoonfeeds me). All of this means you're probably going to be listening to music that's not from the major labels, or at least exposed to a lot of independent music. If you buy someone else's product then the big music industry thinks that they've "lost a sale."
The barrier to entry for recording and publishing music is incredibly low right now. This means that the number of competitors to the big music industry is increasing at a very rapid rate. How does a company, or group of companies, compete when the market they have dominated suddenly has thousands and thousands of competitors with the ability to deliver their product just via the same methods as the big companies? Worse, how do you compete against those who are willing to create products and give them away? Smart companies will see the trend and will ask themselves, "how can I make this work for me?" The big music industry isn't sure how to compete and so they are fighting the trend and lashing out any way they can.
In an official statement, Microsoft has said it has no immediate plans to sue [CC] after alleging patent infringements by open-source vendors for the time being.
Great, so there's no reason for Fortune, or any other rag, to publish any stories about Microsoft's patent ramblings until they do sue. Right?
I'm curious. What exactly has been spoiled for you?

So what? Awards are meaningless. It's still a good movie whether it wins one hundred awards or zero.

I've also learned that many times the only reason that JavaScript is enabled is for some useless effect like fading in and out.
Obigitory YouTube clip
