  1. Re:Less keystrokes on The Next Leap for Linux · · Score: 1

to install debian than to type in the windoze license key.
I was curious about this statement so I decided to test it. The MS license key on my laptop is 25 characters in length. Here are the keypresses I made to install Debian Etch:
    1. Enter at the boot menu
    2. Enter for the language
    3. Enter for the country
    4. Enter for the keymap
    5. Enter to accept the default hostname
    6. Enter to accept the default domain name
    7. Enter to use guided partitioning
    8. Enter to select the hard drive to partition
    9. Enter to accept "All files in one partition"
    10. Enter to accept "Finish partitioning"
    11. Left arrow to select "yes" for "Write changes to disk"
    12. Enter to accept "write changes to disk"
    13. Enter to select the default (Eastern) time zone.
    14. Enter one character for the root password
    15. Enter to submit the root password
    16. Enter one character to verify the root password
    17. Enter to submit the verification for the root password
    18. Enter to skip full name for new user
    19. Enter one character for new account username
    20. Enter to submit new account username
    21. Enter one character for the user's password
    22. Enter to submit the user's password
    23. Enter one character to verify the user's password
    24. Enter to submit the verification for the user's password
    25. Right arrow to select "no" for "use a network mirror"
    26. Enter to submit "no" for "use a network mirror"
    27. Enter to submit "no" for "Participate in the package usage survey"
    28. Tab to select "continue" on the software selection screen
    29. Enter to submit "continue" on the software selection screen
    30. Tab to select "continue" on the video selection screen
    31. Enter to submit "continue" on the video selection screen
    32. Enter to install grub to the master boot record
    33. Enter to complete install and reboot the machine
As you can see your statement is not correct. It takes more keystrokes to install Debian than it does to enter the MS license key. In fact, a user is likely to use even more keystrokes since they'll probably want to set the appropriate timezone and keymap, use more than a one character root password, user name, and user password, use a network mirror, etc.

That's somewhat true. You have to form a hypothesis and see where it leads if you are going to solve a problem. I doubt that anyone is going to come out of the woodwork and say "I have the solution" and be correct. We have to try many different things to see what works and what doesn't. You can't even be bothered to create your post's content, opting instead to use a form. What exactly are you contributing to this discussion? It's ridiculous to think that even people who spend a *LOT* of time behind their computer would be familiar with some obscure video on YouTube. So we have a video of someone mindlessly yapping away at their camera. Big deal. Youtube is a vast sea of millions of people mindlessly yapping away at cameras. Yet, somehow, the AC thinks you must be living under a rock if you haven't seen this one yapping face out of millions of yapping faces. If you surf the net *so* much that you know what this video is and can recognize it then you are either in the AC's circle of friends or you really need to get away from the computer for the benefit of your health.

Here's hoping. Frequent restarts of things on my computer make me furious. I can't imagine why anyone would tolerate such things.
Nobody forces you to use Firefox. You can use Opera, Konqueror, links or IE, or any other browser out there...
While that is true, those other browsers either don't have the extensibility of Firefox or don't have the same variety of add-ons. For some people Firefox has become the new operating system (this is how I look at Firefox) and what OS it runs on is largely now irrelevant. Switching to another browser isn't feasible as the add-ons that they need might not be there. I realized this when, as a long-time desktop Windows user, I have recently started making the switch to Ubuntu Linux. I realized that I spent at least 99% of my time using my web browser so it doesn't matter which OS I used. Firefox has become my OS in a way.

For people who think like me the following is true:
    • Firefox = operating system
    • Add-ons = applications
Given that, would you be happy if you had to restart your OS once a day because of poor memory management?

You've never been able to download a new version of IIS for any version of Windows, what's more IIS7 relies heavily on Longhorn features that just aren't present in earlier versions.

Of course you knew this already, I'm sure... and you just wanted to be disingenuous.
I didn't know that and I'm not being disingenuous. Please assume good faith. I'm not very experienced with MS's web technologies and had not even heard of IIS7 until this article was posted. Most of my experience is using Linux in a server capacity and writing PHP, Perl, and Java code. I'm seeing a shift in the demand for web services at work, particularly now that my company is rolling out SharePoint 2007. I'm struggling to gain focus on the MS web technologies and how they all fit together. Up until this point I've used Apache on my linux server and Resin on my windows machines. I'd like to work with whatever tools MS has just to make my life easy. I can download IE7 for Windows XP. Is it so unusual that I might expect that the web server of the same version might also be available for XP?

If IIS7 is only available on Vista then this seems like MS is shooting themselves in the foot. I have a Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro development environment. I'm unwilling to upgrade my operating system just to run a service that listens on port 80. For the standpoint of a potential customer, there a huge cost in planning and executing the upgrade, including the reinstallation and reconfiguration of all of the software that's currently installed on those systems. There is also a cost in retraining support staff to learn the differences and quirks of administrating a new OS. That's a heavy price to pay if one needs or wants the features that IIS7 offers.
