    But can you explain this incompetence?

    Let's focus on GM. Consider the Impala:

    It sits on a 20 year old platform employing a V6 engine (which means fuel economy isn't great), whose horse power is less than some 4-cylinders! To make it worse, it will not get updated till 2014! Think about that, and you convince me. That this is not blatant gimmcry. To add insult to injury, you always hear, "American enginners are the best!"...and stuff like, "The best products are made in America!" Ohh Jeeze..!

    Time for a lesson in comprehension, I guess: -

    It has everything to do with the topic because it plays into the whle notion of mediocrity and gimmicry, among the subject car companies. They bamboozle Americans and have been doing so for a while now.

    These companies lack candor. Please convince us that they do in fact have the honesty they protray among the buying public.

    Hyundai borrowed its MO from American auto companies. Hyundai cars, like cars from America's big three, are all designed to fail after a particular mileage.

    To see this, you can hardly find any of those cars that "hold their value" so to speak.

    You visit an auto shop for what seems to be a "small problem" and you're faced with exorbitant costs. In the end, you end up being told to replace the faulty part.

    In many cases this isn't enough as you then are advised that going with a new vehicle is cheaper in the long run. Sad indeed.

    Scientists, through the Army-funded research dubbed Mind's Eye, have created intelligent software that recognizes human activities in video and can predict what might just happen next; sounding an alarm if it detects anomalous behavior.

    To use the words, "might just happen next", is just code for "might not happen next".

    In short, it's just a loophole for scientists to get more funding, while emphasizing that their software does exactly what they said it would do.

    We have better thing to do or worry about, right?

    It's by design. Especially if those devices are marketed for the American market. Wanna know what else is designed to fail after a certain set time?

    Well, Microwave ovens, cars, especially those from one once big American car company, that recieved millions in bailout cash under this president.

    In industry, it's called Planned Obsolescence, and Americans are pioneers.

    are going to be part of the discourse as slashdotters exchange ideas on Apple, despite whatever happened to the phrase when one considers the maps fiacso and the chipping issues that have been part of the latest iphone story.

    And it won't be long, trust me on that...just saying.

    It's just standard boilerplate rhetoric. It's sad, sad indeed. But can one please remind me of what I am losing by intentionally refusing to join Facebook?

    I should add that even without Facebook, I am doing pretty good so far. What am I missing?

    I do not try in any way, to belittle these spin-offs in any way. I guess the better questions to ask would be:

    Are all these inventions really worth all the cash that has been spent on NASA and the shuttles?

    Are proponents saying that these inventions would not be in existence had it not been due to NASA's work? I doubt it.

    While I applaud the engineers' achievements, I am not sure that these space shuttles' cost has been worth it. I know experiments have been done in space...but can someone really tell me what an ordinary street walking John Doe has benefited from these shuttles? I am open minded and waiting to be convinced.

    Heck, our country is in bad shape financially. The funds used to build and maintain these shuttles could have done a lot more. Isn't it?

    This won't fly. "Special software updates" have been around for a very long time. In fact, Apple's rubber-banding patent can still be put in place on non iOS phones as I write this.

    The party that would be sued does not have to do anything. Updates are being done now to enable so many features that would otherwise be problematic out of the box.

    Remember, wer're talking about open source software here.

    This solution will help companies that are being sued.

    Let them just remove the "offending features", then allow users to reinstall them via a "special software update". They do not have to be responsible for the software update or the software itself...heck, they are not Apple. Then let's see who these folks in Microsoft's camp will sue.

    This solution would be very ideal in a case such as Apple's so called 'rubber-band patent' and many others. How about that?

    So you damn the company because you don't agree with the personal opinion of one of its employees?

    Nope! Not at all. What bothers me and most of the iOS users is the subtext. In fact, Apple had to remove those unfortunate claims, (Look at comment 4).

    Heck, Apple maps are still very very disappointing. People bought into the idea that they were to be getting a fully functional device...not some piece of junk.

    The map still does not work in my area of interest! To make matters worse, they were replacing a fully functional product...all in the name of "it just works"...what ever that now means. I had to dump the device and got myself the SG3. I am happy I did.

    Lies, blatant lies, or call them broad day thievery, for lack of a better term. Wanna know why? Here's why:

    Apple's top gun on their "wonderful maps..."

    "Designed by Apple from the ground up, Maps give you turn-by-turn spoken directions, interactive 3D views, and the stunning Flyover feature. All of which may just make this app the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever."

    Want proof? Fella, I didn't make this up:

    Read here for the actual claim, here, for customers who almost revolted (my words), and here to satisfy your mind that Apple was then forced to face the truth.

    What are you talking about? I lived on $10/hr for a few years. This is how I did it:

    1: Shared a house with 4 other folks. Each one of us occupied a room we used as a bedroom.
    2: Used public transit.
    3: Prepared my own meals (in bulk, and froze the excess), took lunch to work and employed the fridge and microwave there.
    4: Did laundry bi-weekly to save on costs.
    5: Never "went out" on the town, or bought luxuries, ever...
    6: Said "NO" to the fairer sex.

    Things have changed now, [for the better], gladly. In fact, you wouldn't recognize me now. But please do not tell me one can't survive on minimum wage.

    To mark this anniversary, it would be useful for members to see statistics about Slashdot members. You see, there are some Slashdoters who are known to only troll, or troll most of the time, or get off-topic faster than one can count to three, or are just annoying.

    Heck, pull those moderation labels and put them in a nice interface to members to see. How about how many comments have been submitted by member? The year he/she joined? There are many metrics that can be useful. What's wrong with that?

    Apple produced a whole mapping app from scratch,...

    Who cares? The thing is almost junk. I say this because no body would expect a company of Apple's stature to spit out alpha quality software like this. Heck, iOS users are [almost] in revolt over this. Maybe you'll say whatever we're seeing is a feature of some sort.

    ...including data that mostly works well, and has a cleaner view on maps...

    Really? Then why do we have discussions like these, on Apple's own site? How much of Aplpe's "koolaid" have you had so far?
