People always try to put down the Russians. Why? Yet the world knows that these folks can achieve a lot more with far fewer resources. To make matters worse, they (the Russians) do not go arround bragging about their achievements.
The Russians did their Buran thing with no fan fare yet and it was more modern and stayed technologically superior to anything we Americans produced for 17 years. Heck we even do not know what they have in store for us.
For sure...if they can control their spaceships from earth, I do not see why landing a shuttle remotely is that tough. Please do not diminish the Russian achievements.
I have read about the beauty of Ruby and how it's better than Python or Perl. I'd not like to start flames but I wonder why Ruby does not have an IDE like that of SmallTalk. Yes, SmallTalk is old time stuff, but this absence does not help Ruby's popularity.
Many times, I have tried learning it on my own and have been frustrated by missing or conflicting versions of components. I'm waiting for some folks to develop a one install package that will take care of all packages needed to develop serious apps on Ruby. An IDE like Access on the JET database engine would be very welcome.
There is some effort to this end. These folks http://www.railslivecd.org/ have started some work in this direction.
This Blue-ray/HD-DVD talk has been raging for a while now. What suprises me is why we've not heard of any "standards" zealots. I do not spare the Open Source Software zealots either. They've been silent too. Should we think that their silence means something is cooking and should be out soon? The OGG folks showed us something instead of just keeping silent.
While speaking of the [football] world cup, here in Canada, hockey is the killer game. Being an immigrant nation, Canada's diverse people return to their roots to support their national footbal teams. For this season, these folks "forget" their Canadian identity. Some are even citizens of Canada!
For those like myself who thought that Canada is made up of "white" folks and "Indians", you will be suprised that these people are now the minority in cities like Toronto.
Since http://www.slashdot.org/ is read through out the world, I'd modify this story's title to read...
Medical Privacy Laws [in the USA] Highly Ineffectual
Slashdotters all over the world are smart enough to know that the problem with those medical records is largely a local problem. That is to say, it is a US problem and not a problem for the whole world. Here in Sweden, we have no such trouble.
For a release that was deleyed to make everything smooth and working as expected, I find that there are so many bugs! Not that I do not epect any bugs at all, but their number is so great.
Just have a lookat those assigned to the Kubuntu team...
> There are other MTAs that are faster, more secure, and miles easier to work with, that offer an equivalent or better featureset, and are just as Free.
Please provide examples, and if possible, tell us how easy or difficult it is to set them up. That way, your comment will be more useful to a n00b like me. Thanx.
With open southern and northern borders, the US government still thinks that al-Qaida and the like will use an airline to get into the US? I laugh at them.
On the otherhand, it's good to see that the EU is flexing some muscle. Bush I believe will say..."they have some backbone..."
I have a 6 year old nephew who is in the US public education system. This individual does not know what eleven looks like. When asked to add 6 to 5, he'll count six balls and another 5 balls, combine the two and then count the combination up to eleven. Because he does not know what 11 looks like, he'll use a counting board, (counting from 1 to 11) in order to figure out what eleven looks like!
He's not alone. So many students are being let down by the system they find themselves in. In this system, you cannot fire a teacher for incompetence! So these teachers do not care. No wonder we lag so far behind the even poor students from 3rd world countries. This is fact. All these students pass the US "equivalence" exams with flying colors. What betrays them is the accent, for most of us find it hard to uderstand them at first.
My problem with this Ruby on Rails paradigm is that I have faled to find a single package that will install on either windows or Linux. On both systems I have encountered dependencies and errors that I have failed to solve.
Could it be that case that I have not found it yet but it exixts? Point me to the URL.
I wonder how those guys pay for the bandwidth. How are they handling this? When I visited their site, I saw no advertising - none!
My request though, is to have full video controls on thier player. The same applies to Google Video by the way. Many a times, the videos simply need some light.
In the `great' USA these days, nothing seems to get done right.
From IRAQ, guys, we're being whipped over there;
to the non functioning healthcare system,
the broken education system,
the massive deficit, (no wonder the dollar is at an all-time low),
corruption in government, though we preach ccontability of governments overseas;
Katrina: The response fell nothing short of a third-world type response,
Our mothers fair badly on the world stage during child birth,
Why should I be suprised? My own niece (6 years old), who is in a public school does not know what 11 looks like. After adding 6 to 5, she has to count on a number board to see what the answer looks like! And she is not alone. At my place of work, my own supervisor cannot write an essay describing what happened in a situation. She has to rely on others to do it!
We are going down guys. Sooner or later, we'll be at the bottom of the pack.
The Emule network is bigger. Why spare it? I have just checked it out and find that the available files now are 677.5 million with about 11 million users. Heck, this beast is huge!
Those at Microsoft just dont't get it. One wonders: Did Google necessarily out-spend Microsoft in the beginning? Nope! They simply did what the masses liked. That was fast, unbiased results in a search result. To-date, Microsoft's search results on Linux are way biased toward switching to them.
May be some of that money be spent on licenses. This is because departments at Microsoft are treated and still treat each other as mini coporations. They bill each other for services.
We should expect the following from Microsoft. Microsoft are going to prepare a patch that will eventually disrupt the working of this plugin in all Office versions.
Or even better, they could change the license to every new shipment of office to specifically prohibit installation of plugins that are not Microsoft approved. This plugin will fall in this category of course.
"The U.S. government wants to develop a ground-based weapon to shoot down enemy satellites in orbit..."
As the USA concetrates on the development of these so called lasers, al-Qaida and its affiliates will enter the USA through the porous southern and norther borders and do greater harm.
Folks, do not be suprised to hear in future that this project has corruption and greed behind it. Remember that the USA spent US$5.99 billion on the shuttle which was never value for money!
This vote will certainly give folks like me more amunition to take on companies like Microsoft at home. With this development, I can push for the following line:
..."The software must be able to read and write the OpenDocument format approved by ISO/IEC"...
The parties involved I believe will be in the knowledge that this standard ie free for all to implement. Kudos to ODF.
Google should auto-magically have a script that makes it the default search engine when an Internet Explorer user visits http://www.google.com/ to make a search.
To put it better, who innovated first? Was is SUN or NoMachine? You can test Linux out via a slow DSL line at http://www.nomachine.com/. A faster one would be better though.
While I appreciate the reviewer's piece, I wonder what it would take to have a review done entirely in flash. These movies would require no software install on most PCs and would be very very effective in passing the message across. The whole business of posting pure HTML with graphics for reviews is becoming very ancient in my opinion.
One draw back though, would be for those still using dialup. They would cry foul! Heck, such a movie could be uploaded to Google Video for free. With this route, the problem is that the video would have to go through some form of editorial process. The advantage in the end would be very much worth the effort.

Seeking or preferring seclusion or isolation.
Does this describe Linus?
But when you listen to their commercials, you might get the impression that VOIP and Vonage were the next best thing after sliced bread!
In America, one is entitled to these freedoms. Who did not see illegal aliens demonstrate for more the right to a path to citizenship?
Think about it for a second: Some people here illegally, demonstrating for the right to become citizens. Absurd!
Key words: "Here illegally."
I'd like to see this paradigm expanded to include the entire line of Microsoft Office. What will it take to see this?
