I wish the astronauts a safe return however, once they are on the ground, these questions must be asked and answers obtained from the NASA bureaucracy:
1: How can the USA spend close to 2 billion dollars and have so little to show for it? The shuttle underwent so many upgrades but all in the industry were surprised that stuff was falling of the shuttle.
2: Would it be a better idea to let those who can do much with so little (read Russians), do our space work since they can do precisely that? After all, a good number of our industrial base is being out-sourced.

I wonder whether I am smelling a Law suite brewing here. There is no way the huge telcos are going to leave this challenge unanswered somehow. They will argue dumping among others. Here in Canada, a basic [old-fashioned] land-line would cost you about US$ 30 per month with unlimited local calls. This excludes about 15% tax. If this arrangement is to come to Canada, these huge telephone companies would do everything possible to thwart competition. In the USA, I can see the FCC coming in to support these conglomerates with all kinds of bye-laws. Of course this would be illegal, but by the time things are sorted out, it would be too late or technology will have changed.
On the other hand this is a question: For those that have used Skype, is it really worth a try? What about those lag issues and clarity of the sound to the talking parties involved?

Huh. I've been using Debian as my full-time desktop system and on various servers and other desktops for eight years, and that's only happened once, when I upgraded an old system directly to Sid and X got horked.
Learn to read. I said "...might leave you with an unusable system". Keyword: might. Failed upgrades are not always the case. It does happen sometimes. Do you understand now? Besides, it also depends on the system itself and what is installed. Now go drink some coffee.
There are many things to love about Linux based Operating Systems especially on the virus/malware/addware side, but what I have come to like about Linspire is that it just works as advertised. It just works! SuSE does not (remember multimedia)? Second, it's beautiful. I love its fonts. For other distros, I have had to tweak X11 and download this script http://vigna.dsi.unimi.it/webFonts4Linux/webFonts. sh in order to see fonts as I like them. What troubles me most is that even for Debian based ones, the invoking of this command "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" might leave you with an unusable system.
Now, if Linspire could adapt autopackage http://autopackage.org/, the better since Linspire packages would be able to install on any distro.
Those who normally say this usually do not have the dexterity to accomplish a given task. I hope you do not belong to this camp.
You should also realize that what you articulate is your opinion. I hope you come from a country that is democratic and as such, values and cherishes different opinions on a given subject.
Let me tell you something. I know what I am talking about. I am sure that if you have used Firefox on both Windows and Linux, you will find the Firefox version uglier than the windows one. I have tried all themes and tweaked all configurations possible. Nothing came close to what I wanted. This reminds me...Firefox even refused to pick my newly installed fonts and my dots-per-inch settings in X11. Heck, why don't you post or tell us where to find a snapshot of what you consider a beautiful window of Firefox on Linux? Then I can handle it from there.
...The new Microsoft browser, Internet Explorer 7 will only be available for users of Windows XP.
But how long will it be before M$ discontinues IE7 updates for users of XP given that that OS is almost 5 years old? I am still not so happy with Firefox on Linux mainly because it looks a bit ugly as compared to its windows counterpart. I am sure work is being done in this department.
...and that is the ogg theora format for all their broadcasts. Guys, we need to build critical mass fast. The BBC is a good place to start. Only God knows what M$ has in plans for Longhorn *cough*,*cough*, sorry, Vista.
"...now wait a minute, how the heck do we respond to this? Before we even thin of an appropriate response, they (Google) will be out with another innovation". S**t!"
Couldn't agree more. This shows how geeky Linux programmers think and it does not help. One wonders why we do not adapt autopackage <URL:http://autopackage.org> or improve it. It would surely solve lots of problems. But why is it so popular? If all these discrepancies were removed, Apache's usage could soar to 99.99%.
I must admit I am an angry American. Why don't we first fix our health-care, education and economic systems before we tackle the moon and Mars? As our infrastructure crumbles, and our schools decline, and we continue to export [manufacturing] jobs, not forgetting senseless wars we are fighting abroad with mounting casualties, it saddens me to see that our president and his administration do not see what needs to be fixed first. Do not forget that he once mentioned "...bring them on...they will soon hear from us...our only option is victory...we want him dead or alive...mission accomplished...! Mind you, this was more than 18 months ago! Some think we are bogged into a senseless war with no end! But we are spending US$ 1 billion per week on war while we have tax paying citizens without health-care coverage, and China is financing our spending by buying out bonds and T-bills.
I suggest the following: Let's explore the oceans looking for new life. Maybe that way, we might find sources for new drugs. I know my call is falling on deaf ears, but I am glad I said it.
It saddens me that our companies like Kodak, Ford, GMC and Boeing are becoming more irrelevant by the day, while Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and others are eating our cake. Our companies are already not as relevant in the electronics field. Where will our grandsons be?
> I don't understand why you try to make a connection to spreading java by including it in a distro and spreading windows by pirating it. It's not the same thing. I have java on my linux system and I got legally from Sun's webpage.
The concept was about "spreading" a piece of software...not the concept of pirating vs legally obtaining a software.
But I understand your point and totally agree with it.
Can someone inform you why SUN will not allow Linux distros distribute java? I know it about licensing but what is the logic behind this? If I were SUN, the distribution of java could only be good news as this would enable java spread...and this can only be good news...because it definitely helps popularize java and increases the potential for sales of other services based on java.
That is how MS-word became popular since M$ allowed Word to be pirated. The same applied to Windows.

If some folks still contest the lunar landing, how relevant can Google Moon be? These folks point to the following: -
1: The moon's surface dust which was now blown away when the craft was landing.
2: Both sides of the American flag were bright! This is impossible since we all know that in an environment lit on one side, the other most have a shadow.
3: The orientation of the astronaut's shadow suggested a different light source other than the sun!
4: The American flag was shown to be being blown by some wind...yet we know that the moon has NO wind!
5: There were no stars in the moon's sky! Where did they go? Americans must have forgotten this one.
Where do you stand on this?
>"Apple's iTunes Music Store can now say half a billion served.
No they can't. In the technology business, one has to be very careful and think twice. With half a billion served, their (Apple's) pockets are deep enough to attract the wrath of McDonalds should they "mess" around with "their" slogan.
I have seen another "scam" this time in Canada. Ads are placed in news papers inviting people to work at home assembling products and stuffing envelopes to earn at least CAD$529.00 (about US$430) weekly. I never believed this at first. They ask you to send a self-addressed envelope to some address. Later on, you are asked to send CAD$29.00 for "materials and more information".
I have heard that once you go for the bait, you are typically asked to send more and more small sums of money for information. But they actually do mail you some documents which can be typically reproduced free at the many government run social centers. The thing is, they never do actually send any useful information till you give up. Remember, you always send a self addressed envelope so they do not lose. As I write this, a colleague tells me a similar ad exists in todays' free Metro news paper! These Canadians - What are they good at?
You do not get it! All governments have what are called "bureaux of standards". These bodies define what is allowed into the respective governments' jurisdictions. That's why, on many electronic devices, it's written: "this device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules..." This makes the buyer expect a reasonable standard. Heck, it's a matter of legislating as thus: "All PC operating systems must meet such and such criteria..." With necessary clauses in place , M$ nonsense would be eliminated.

The terrorists could also use the same technology to continue their work after a [US] strike takes out power.
But the question is whether this is the same science in glow sticks or one Catholic rosary I have seen that glows in the dark.
