Indeed. Publishing a fucking demo would cut a significant portion of the pirates.
Why?
Those who pirate to demo the game, have little incentive to buy it should they decide they like it. Only those ones who actually have morals and say "Hey, they deserve money for this."
These days - I only tend to pirate to test something out. Almost nobody releases demos these days, so I have no other way of finding out without tossing $40-$60 on a gamble. Of course, dropping the whole "whaaa you can't return opened software" blanket policy would help with this, but demos would be the best fix.
You see, I believe in fair and proportional punishment. I also believe in not crippling someone's involement in society when they are released back into it. If he hasn't paid his dues, then why the fuck is he out of jail?
Put him in jail, put him in a mental facility, put him on parole... whatever you need to do THAT FITS THE SYSTEM (and doesn't go into the "crime + computer = OMG WTF KILL HIM" pattern)
I especially love the pattern of: crime + computer = DOUBLE PLUS UN-GOOD CRIME
I mean, come on. Use the laws, precedents, and sentencing guidelines we already have. I just don't get why (aside from financial crimes) computers make judges and lawyers froth at the mouth.
(financial crimes - yea - you can effect a VERY LARGE amount of people. but still, even in these cases... a bit extreme)
Our records indicate you spend an unacceptably disproportionate amount of time thinking of the children. You have automatically been flagged as a sex offender, and as such are subject to permanent imprisonment or execution.
Now, before you panic, we realize you didn't harm anyone. Execution is unlikely. See? Nothing to be afraid of. Now, please be a dear and follow these nice guards out to the van. I'll see to it your family is notified.
Oh all right. But it was still sprite based, and had some wierd pseudo perspective. Quake 2 was true polygonal 3D for just about everything (excepting a couple sprites). Not sure what to call the particle system.
I call shenanigans. Humans don't have the gear for that. Other species do, but it's no simple mutation - the whole system is adapted to work with the extra sensitivity.
Er, my point is that radar is used (in general aviation) for two things:
Doppler - so you can 'see' rain before you see it.
ATC - vectoring planes around so they have little to no chance of collision.
The aircraft themselves don't have radar beyond weather (on larger planes at that). They use radio based navigation systems such as the ones I already listed. The GPS is nice to have but is by far not the only option.
We have shelves full of marine-style batteries with rather large cables hooking them up, then cables coming of the bus rails going to the UPS modules that I swear are thicker than my arm. If a battery swells it's right there and in the open.
Horrid setup. But it works. Sorta. One of these nights I'll take some photos for all your viewing 'pleasure'

So, fuzzing basically. Then you have the enemy responding by spending more money and weight shielding the electronics.
Maybe not the most dramatic effect, but anything to give them a harder time.
... who finds it funny that this portable HIV detection device uses a lance?
"Sir, first the good news: you were not HIV positive. Now, the bad: you are now."
I'm sure the lances would be disposable and all, but still.
Yes.

Sir, please come with me.

YOU'RE NOT THINKING OF THE CHILDREN!
Guards! Arrest this swine! Send him to "reeducation!"

Er, it's for chromium. Learn to read, please.
Keep in mind Duke3D wasn't actually 3D. It was based off the doom ID engines (heretic and such). Quake II was, you know, actual 3D.
Indeed. I have a non-nerd friend who likes guns because they go BANG and make him feel powerful.
I, however, like guns because of the ballistics and other mechanics behind it all.
Unfortunately it seems it will take an outbreak of Gonorrhea 2.0 to get the lesson to stick.
Thankfully, it will be a hell of a lot easier to prevent than the bugs roaming the hospitals now.
As another poster put it: 'It's called a condom and not screwing nasty hoes!'
I call shenanigans. Humans don't have the gear for that. Other species do, but it's no simple mutation - the whole system is adapted to work with the extra sensitivity.
Where is this Microsoft Vist and where can I find it? :P
Generally there are lots of other little things you do wrong on the road to that firing.
Too bad for you. Do your job right and you tend to not get axed at the next convenient excuse.
I know people who work in the Florida DC. They do, and they are smart people. Don't assume incompetence.
He can see it in the pixels.
Er, NBDs and VOR/VORTAC do not have 'high degrees' of error.

So is Oracle just gone and shot off a foot, here?
I'm pretty sure we would still have VFR, VOR/VORTAC, NBD/DME, etc.
Sure, it might be a bit more 'interesting' not running into anyone, but you hardly NEED gps (or radar) to get from A to B.
Links below, because having [wikipedia.org] fifteen times in the middle of the text is irritating.

The cat is redundant anyways. Assuming you can read the file, you can point strings at it directly. Faster that way.
Go away. Go away, and never come back.
I should mention our system is pretty ghetto.

I think he means recording data daily and watching for trends.
The UPS systems we have give us all sorts of data I don't understand. Frequencies, wave crests, etc.
