Actually, that tendency seems to be a characteristic of most everyone from that culture - that is, not asking for clarification, but forging ahead despite doubt or a strong possibility of misunderstanding. I am not sure what the source of the tendency is, but I have seen it over and over in my dealings with Indian development firms and individual developers - describe specs or requirements, or how some system should work, and they nod their heads quietly (actually it's more of a head-bob than a nod), go do their work, and come back four weeks later with something that is in no way what we asked for and is based on major misunderstandings about what we actually said in the first place.

Religion is a never-ending (or, if one is religious, an eventually-ending) quest for truth. What does that have to do with ignoring fact? Just because some people cling to a disbelief in God to counter their insecurities by creating a false superiority over others doesn't mean that it's all a hoax.

As much sense as the theory of evolution may make, it really is important to remember that it is still a theory, and a theory in the Oxford Dictionary meaning ("a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something"). It hasn't actually been proven, so it's not entirely fair to expect people to abandon ideas that are very central to their religious beliefs just because other people say they should. Stepping back a moment from any loaded terms like "Christian" or "Conservative" or "Fundamentalist", which many /.ers seem to associate with "stupid", "backward", "obstinate", and looking simply at religious, one would think we could all lend each other at least a modicum of respect for such a thing.

  22. Re:the ultimate design-by-committee on Slashdot CSS Redesign Winner Announced · · Score: 4, Interesting

The first and the second are both excellent studies in slightly different information philosophies. If you imagine a spectrum of importance on which all information must fall, 0 being not at all important, and 10 being extremely important, then typically in a good design the visual accessibility of each piece of information will be proportional to the level of importance it is assigned. 10-items (headlines, etc) should be highly accessible visually.

The winning design simply shows that the designer believes all information on the slashdot page falls between a 6 and a 10. The second design has a much steeper curve - headlines are a 10, but immediately drops off into the 4-7 range. The visual accessibility curve should always be influenced by both form and function (aesthetics and purpose), but ultimately saying the design is "poor" is a purely subjective, personal view. From technical design, color theory and 2-D theory standpoints it is really quite good. Just not necessarily the best match for slashdot's function.
