  1. Compare Linux to the PC architecture on Linux Approaching A Fork In The Road? · · Score: 1

When everyone started to make PC's, there was a lot of concern about people making incompatible PC's. Did it happen? Yes! IBM came out with the PS/2 and people were very concerned, because it used the proprietary MCA bus. How many of us still use the MCA bus? What about VESA Local Bus? What about PCI? What about AGP? The good ideas ended up in everyone's final products.

Linux will follow a simlar pass. Proprietary things will eventually lose out as everything becomes more and more open. I'm sure that someone will start producing versions of Linux that are incompatible with the others, but since they are incompatible, people won't like them. Either that, or they come up with some nifty new idea, and then all of the other Linux's start using that idea.

Everyone can start making their own Linux distros, but keeping them similar is in everyone's best interest. Linux will follow the same path as the PC Architecture. PS/2 style mice and keyboards are becoming the norm, but is everyone gnashing their teeth? NO!

  2. What about MTV on What Does the Audio Home Recording Act Really Allow? · · Score: 3

Ok, if it's legal to copy a TV broadcast onto a VHS tape, then is it not legal to copy a music video off MTV, even for my own personal use? And then what if I had a digital recorder such as TIVO? Would this be different still? Is TIVO legal?

Obviously, the RIAA is mostly concerned about scaring people at this point. If they can make people think that they will actually get in trouble for making MP3's of any type, it will scare people away from the technology. Isn't that essentially FUD?

  3. Protect The Children (TM) on 6 year old hotwires car-heads to highway · · Score: 1

He obviously learned this from something he saw on the Internet. A child could not possibly figure out how to plug a battery wire into a plug connection. We need to do more to protect our children from the Internet.

But seriously, if it was a Power-Wheels, you just plug one end of the wire plug into the recepticle and "vrooom." Most 2 year olds are probably capable of this.

I got ticked off at them because I'm one of those who pays their 5 bucks a month so I don't have to do advertising, and they still put that stupid Geocities watermark on my page. How? By modifying the code of my web page.

I guess I was the only one that got mad because they didn't get rid of the watermark.

As a rural American, the NRA is one of the few organizations protecting the rural way of life. If people in the cities can't control their guns, leave us rural residents out of their legislation.

To stay on topic, I should say that I agree with your analysis of this article. Sounds like FUD.

How long before such devices are placed on streets and in building entrances to randomly search the populace As opposed to security guards? The only reason we don't have security guards all over is because then we'd have to pay them, pay Social Security, Medial, Dental, etc. This would be a great cheap alternative. I don't think the gov't would have a huge database of our wallet contents... (Think of how messed up the IRS is! This would be even worse!) But then, on the other hand, people are always quick to give up their rights, if it means catching more criminals. And unfortunately, each new law creates more criminals. What wasn't illegal yesterday, is illegal today. So then more criminals are caught that weren't criminals the day before and the law looks like it's doing the trick, while normal people go to prison and prisons become more and more overcroweded. My $0.02USD, anyway...

The "Linux is for nerds and geeks and otherwise intelligent people" attitude irritates the heck out of me.

Right now, it's true that you have to be intelligent to install Linux, but I for one hope that in a couple years anyone will be able to install it and run it.

Stop the elitist attitudes. That's what's going to kill Linux, more than anything else. Helping the clueless is by far the best way to go.

On the desktop-side, a whole heck of a lot of things have to happen before it will ever be competitive, besides Gnome and KDE.

People have to write programs for Linux; a lot more people than are currently writing programs for Linux; and they have to make a profit at it; and PHB's need to see this happening; I could go on, but I'll stop for now.

Oh yeah. And Winmodems / Host Modems have to be able to work under Linux. Get 3Com and Rockwell to support it under Linux. Who wants to spend 3 or 4 times as much for a modem, so that they can run a "free" operating system. I've seen 56K win-type modems going for $22 a piece. Ok, that's just my peeve. I had to get it off my chest.

The biggest problem I have with Windows, is that every year or so, I end up wiping it out and starting over. I've only been using Linux for about 18 months, but it certainly seems like you have more control over the OS. But then, I come from a DOS background, not a UNIX background. In DOS, we had quite a bit of control, too.

I play with Linux, and I use The Gimp, but I still do most of my work in Windows. Maybe some day, I'll make the big switch.
