Great Job Rob, I commend you on all the work you've done. I mean, sure - it's warrented and everything, but I just think that with the amount of people who rely on SlashDot for all their news (just like I do), it's definitley a self-less act.
I'm one of those people who've tried to run the SlashDot Engine on my own and have tried countless times to post stories daily to no avail. It's been pathetic, and I have a story about every week - but hey, at least it's something.
Thanks to the not-so-behind the scenes people at SlashDot (Taco, Hemos, Roblimo, Nate, etc.). I can't speak for everyone else (but I could assume..) but I think it's all good.
Thanks again, Matthew _____________________________________
I hear the lag calling me already.. I might just have to stop by today.
Open Projects has a good website, I like it. That makes about me and a million other people. Lovely.

Whatever you do.. don't go commercial
on
Which BSD?
·
· Score: 2
If I could give any advice, it would not to go with the commercial BSD, BSDi. It's a royal pain in the ass on whatever you want to compile, and even worse to setup with a network - if you don't know what your doing.
However, this can be argued for any distro, but still.. I believe BSDi to be the worst in that category - it's simply nasty.
Stick with FreeBSD, it's stable, nice, and don't forget free.
Peace, Matthew _____________________________________
Well, not only does the fact of owning a glowing Christmas tree scare the hell out of me, it also makes me think about how commercial Christmas is. We have commercials telling us to "the perfect gift" for mom/dad/sister/brother/neice/nephew/cat/dog/bird/f rog/rock and it's a pathetic waste of time. I mean, does a company actually care if your parents, etc. (see above for more examples) are happy with the gift they receive? Hell no, they just care that they make some gigantic product and you turn the wheel of the country's economy, and the latter isn't that common either.
So what can we do to stop this total insult to our intelligence one may ask, well, not buying the product is a solution, but how many people can safely say they will not buy it regardless? Not many, I presume. We're forced as the human species to fit in as best we can, especially the younger generations.
Listen up SlashDot readers, it's getting pathetic how this idea/story is actually commended by the public, it's a pathetic idea, and some things are just too traditional to try and change. This will not catch on, it will just sit there in the stockroom collecting dust for god knows how many years. Now, glowing underwear.. that's a different story.

Well, that's a question that I haven't really asked myself - why do I like Geeks in Space? Hmm, I think it's just because it's people talking who actually know what's going on, and know how to pronounce Linux:)
Personally, my favourite parts have been anything not news related - I get enough of it text-based. Although I am not a stalker, I like to hear about your personal lives.. it's makes it more interesting for me, and I'm sure a few more off-the-wall people like myself. Guests are OK, but I prefer the same people in everytime, therefore I agree with you Taco. I read a post before mine saying "We like good guests". Define good buddy, a word so broad shouldn't be used when giving feedback:)
Anyway, keep up the great work on Geeks in Space, I'm glad to see that particular day's date on the left hand side of my web browser.
By the way, are you guys planning on doing it every Wednesday or just when available?
Thanks again, Matthew _____________________________________
like the movie 'Hackers' then please someone tape it and send it to me -- I just loved that movie so much (like any teksavvy person should).
As I know they'll be embarassed by something that's totally off, maybe MTV should've submitted an article to/. asking for suggestions on what they could cover.. those Jane people should've started a trend with the media!
And another thing about media.. (and totally offtopic) has anyone seen the new Our Lady Peace video for One Man Army -- is that not the same place where that Barenaked Ladies video was shot?? I mean.. I'm not a big fan of OLP or BNL but I made the connection.. don't you think that's a bit edgy?
Ok, I'm done rambling about Music and MTV.. wow.. maybe that wasn't so off-topic after all.:)
With mental breakdown issues, Matthew _____________________________________
Well, I have to admit - I havn't been using Linux for *that* long at the console, so I was totally lost when I first even thought of installing Linux. BUT, I took my time.. and planned my moves over about 2 weeks. I read lots and lots of documents written by various people. Sure they were way over my head, sure they had bad grammer, sure they didn't tell me step by step what to do but they certainley gave me a clue.
I think that these journalists are looking for a high-end OS that has a high-end setup program. It doesn't matter if the guy knows what he's doing, it's if he thinks he knows what he's doing. It's basically a mind over matter situation here - and it's utterley pathetic.
Ok, ok.. so your a bit bitter on anyone giving negative comments to linux. Uhm.. tell me this - why? Sure you like it, and maybe you like the Backstreet Boys too.. I don't give a flying frig about any of it - I have opinions on linux and the Backstreet Boys that I keep to myself because I know people would be offended to hear them - on either side of the spectrum. For example, one of these statements below will offend you:
- Backstreet Boys suck...
- Backstreet Boys rule... - Linux sucks because... - Linux rules because...
It's a primary yelling match that belongs in the sandbox or on the playground, not in office buildings or tech-savvy places.
So these journalists are just looking for things that please them.. whether it be a blue setup screen or a red setup screen, whatever appeals to them is what effects their point of view in their column. But at least try to give them credit.. somebody has to write crappy articles or else we'd never have anything to criticize:-)
Peace, Matthew _____________________________________
I love new versions and yet don't know why. It doesn't matter if there is 1 improvement in the code, I still want it just to say I have the newest version. It's one of my pet peeves. And now for a little topic that's off-topic: I don't like upgrading kernels.. pretty freaking weird eh?

should automatically be labelled Dr. Linux Torvalds as the most powerful doctor:-)
Well, I think he does deserve it.. after all, he did start the key element for SlashDot.. could you imagine Rob coding in ASP? Hahaha.. too funny. Heard of Slash-PHP, try Slash-ASP..
I'm still not quite sure about an Honorary vs. a "Normal" doctorn (I think that's how you spell it) but either way he does deserve it.. that and every other member who's every contributed to Linux, but we all know that's not going to happen soon.
Peace and Pancakes, Matthew _____________________________________
Glad to see everyone associates the Queen with RedHat now thanks to someone at the 700+ command of power making the decision:-)
But the queen does need a stable website like she needed that hip replacement. After all, if another one of the royals die, she can totally ignore their death on a stable server.
Fumbling towards royalty, Matthew _____________________________________
It appears that the ISP didn't like the amount of traffic to that particular website and pulled the plug.. but that's a big guess considering most ISP's don't know how to edit apache without a geek around.
Anyway, if it was up, I would visit it.. I find these highly amusing not only because it is so true, but also because it gives another reason to initiate those 3 new TLD's sooner.. but maybe under a different name, I personally would not buy mrplabs.web or something along those lines - it's just not sane.
But definitley the fight for domain names is becoming more and more heard of, as I have mentioned previously, due to the extreme lack of domain names that are actually available to the general public. Of course, if you have an extra couple thousand laying between your mattress you can surely get a good domain name on eBay or something equivelent.
Anyway, something definitley has to be done about the lack of domain names and especially the Slashdot Effect:)
This little article really started to make me think about the possiblility of companies and their control over almost anything that they want to sell. I've seen the many articles on SlashDot about this topic, but this never really hit home until I saw some concrete evidence (at least in my opinion). Very interesting..
It's a shame that the docs of the hardware don't cover this or at least give some insight into why those particular ports are open, etc.. I think users that actually spend hard earned money (or not so hard earned) to buy the product deserve to know.
Somewhat cool idea.. but when people are in the grieving process, I think this might tramatize them even more. Then again, it could be a better way of releasing a lot of stress by getting to say your 'final goodbye'.
However, maybe the legal system will be against this.. after all, you *could* record their voice saying they'll give you all this crap when they die after they have actually passed on.. this might sound far fetched but I'm sure you know someone who would love to do this.
Cheers to anyone who can be like Bette Midler and keep coming back when no-one wants them,
Well, considering 56k is high speed internet access to most bigger companies.. I have my doubts.
Although this is a cool idea overall. Maybe if they didn't use Windows CE it might be a little bit more appealing to me.. just a personal thing though (and don't flame me cause I use Windows 98 and Slackware so i'm basically neutral)
Hah! I read about that in the paper a while back.. talk about stupid. But at least it would be pretty cool for the kids telling their friends where they go to school.
Well, I didn't hear anyone sueing Barney for their child's name, or everyone calling him a big purple blob that *tries* to sing and dance.. why the hell should they care if it's a son's name Kenny? I'm sure anyone who's watched a movie has come across their name (and something bad happened to them) but hell, don't let it get to ya.
I think that mother might have more psychological problems than her son Kenny..
I think this might be great until you want to stand up.. then you might have a slight problem on your hands (or floor).
Believe me, staying in one position for a long, long, long time (representing anyone who reads slashdot and stays at the computer for many hours) is really hard to re-cover from, and get the blood flowing again.
Cheers to anything that makes your foot fall asleep.
I have to say that this is a damn good idea. Although you might run into Malda or someone else getting in major crap because of Copyright infringement or something along those lines, but I guess it's worth a try.
I'm sure if SlashDot contacted the company / individual before they posted the story and got permission to mirror it, I think all would be ok. How about mirroring the site for.. let's say a week and then just pointing it to the normal URL.
I think Linux is great and all, but it's not perfect (yet), we need to be fair in advocating it.
Unfortunally there's a problem with this statement.
Windows isn't perfect yet, and they're advertising like mad. Seriously too.. when has Windows ever run error-free for one 'segment' of work for me? None, I always end up rebooting.
Maybe you should consider posting this reply to anything NT related as well, except replace the words 'Linux' with 'NT', and 'downtime' with 'uptime'.
I just wanted to say Good Job to the officer personally.. Good Job Officer Stebbins.
When posting comments it really should say the above article then you write your comment below it just for people who's memory is totally shot at a young age (a.k.a me).
Now here's a police officer that uses his training to choose the better path: Linux. As he proved, it served it's purpose when it was most needed, when someone needed desperate help.
Now if I was the one on the phone getting directions on how to revive or possibly save the family member/friends life I would not want directions on the dispatchers screen to suddenly be replaced by a blue screen. I don't think a GPF would do me any good then.
Just think of the many people relying on Windows to aid many citizens in everyday tasks. For example, I found this picture quite amusing until I actually thought about it. How would I feel if I had to scramble around the airport at the last minute figuring out if my flight was delayed or not because of an error in the messaging system. Not that funny anymore.
Overall I think that Officer should be awarded something.. I don't know what, but maybe a gold penguin or something at the 1st Annual Linux Awards when they eventually are sponsored:)
Congrats to Officer Linux and the Sgt., Matthew ______________________________________
