You sir, are an asshat. Around 99% of all programmers do not write proprietary commercial software. Most programmers write in-house software for the needs of particular businesses.
I think the free software people are idiots.
Well screw you too.
Kinda the same if 1/2 the plumbers in the world went around doing the job for nothing-
No, it's not. Free-software authors do not work for free. In fact, just the opposite of what you said is true. If free-software becomes the norm, software developers will be more like plumbers, going around fixing things that are broken, because they will be able to, because the software will be open.
Please don't offer my employer to replace me with something that is free.
Judging by your complete lack of understanding, I think your employer should replace you with a small shell-script.
Ok, now I'm being an asshole:) You posted flaimbait first though, I don't know how the hell it got modded up to +5.
Come to think of it,/. would be a great resource for a lawyer looking for clients. Plus,/. would be providing a lot of legal argumentation for said lawyer, she would just have to filter out the junk that isn't legally valid arguments.
Why yes, yes it is still breaking the law. Besides the fact that he applied for the trademark 2 years after the original registration of the domain, forging a signature is a serious offense. I say throw the bastard in the slammer for a few months.
I wish/. had a full-time lawyer to read over this stuff and offer her opinion, that would be cool.
re: proprietary formats -- Yeah, no kidding... Especially considering that they were planning support for Mac and Linux from the get-go, and bink supposedly has problems on OS X.
I mean, come on, WHAT were they thinking? There are plenty of open and/or free and/or cross-platform video file formats. DivX;-), MPEG 4, Quicktime(yes, you can get proprietary cross-platform dev kits for using qt on Linux, Mac, Windows, even other unixes), even MPEG 2 would be fine.
It just doesn't make sense, unless they were paid to use Bink, which I highly doubt.
I held off on getting NWN because I wanted the Linux client. I'm a Linux user by choice, and a gamer by way of life, so I occasionally cave in and buy a windows-only game. I had planned to pick up NWN, because I'm not into RPGs and wanted to give a good looking one a try, and NWN was supposed to be supported on Linux, so what better one to try?
Well, I guess that has kind of fallen through... Guess I'll be trying out some RPG's on my PS2 instead.
Not to mention, DRM will make life a PITA for many people some of the time, and for some people(probably a lot of/.ers) all the time.
Actually, it's a PITA already. Sometimes I receive "encrypted"(usually by some knucklehead not understanding what he's doing) pdf files that I need to do stuff with... That's just one example. It isn't infrequent that I must violate the DMCA in order to do my job. They're little things, things that noone would think are violations, but by the letter of the law they certainly are.

ranting and raving about the DMCA, DRM, RIAA, MPAA, dirty politicians, U.S. Congress(oops, that's a dupe), etc.

I submitted the "why root" question, and while I think Lindows should use some method to separate the normal user from the superuser, I must admit that overall I am impressed by Robertson's tackling of the problems of putting Linux on the "average Joe's" computer.
I think the default account should be a normal user, and users should be encouraged to give normal user accounts to family members and others sharing the PC, so that one member doesn't destroy the whole system. To "su" to root when installing software, changing configuration, etc., the system could simply have the user enter a keyboard combination that is captured by the OS, eg. ctrl+alt+delete.
That would bring complete ease of use, while maintaining tighter security.
OTOH, after posting the original question, a Lindows user informed me that current versions of Lindows ask the user, during installation, if they want to create accounts for normal users...
another myth that poeple need cleared up every fucking time is thus:
THE MEMORY USAGE OF X REPORTED BY `TOP' IS NOT CORRECT
THE MEMORY USAGE OF X REPORTED BY `TOP' IS NOT CORRECT
THE MEMORY USAGE OF X REPORTED BY `TOP' IS NOT CORRECT
Got it? Good! Stop the nonsense regarding X! Stop trying to throw out the baby with the bathwater.
Network transparency is used by a lot of people. Network transparency does not slow down X locally. Network transparency does not add considerable bloat.
The memory usage you see in X is actually the memory of your video card + X, often allocated in different ways causing `top' to display a huge amount of memory incorrectly.
With how cheap these are now, I'll probably have all 3 withing a year. Right now I have a PS2, which I paid $300 for. The drive is starting to make a lot of noise; it started after I moved, someone probably dropped it or something. With the price drops, maybe I'll just buy another console instead of buying more PS2 games, and hopefully finish the ones I have before this thing stops working.
Do I buy a copy of XP, or do I buy an Xbox? I tend to stick to games I can play on Linux or my PS2... Considering I despise Microsoft, on both technical and moral grounds, which way would be the least... "evil" way to go?
I suppose I also have to consider that I hate to reboot...
Perhaps I should wait to see if the game is any good or not:)
Hmmm... The Xbox is actually cheaper than buying XP...
PC hardware sucks a nut, just bite the bullet and buy the way-overpriced Apple hardware that sucks just a little less.
Yeah, I'm being a bit sarcastic. But to be fair, Apple is a hardware company, and a large part of what makes OS X pretty good is that it is tied to the hardware, therefore it's much easier to support. Ie. there's no driver "issues", broken hardware(eg. AGP ports not supplying enough voltage), etc.
OT -- your sig: Why do the peaceniks never ask Hussein to step down and free the country?
That's a good question, and I'm sure there are a number of answers, all pretty lame. I suppose some may secretly like the man. Maybe they're affraid of getting shot? Maybe the ignorant fucks are just being partison -- a logical assumption, as 90% of them didn't complain when Clinton bombed Iraq, less descriminately to boot - really hypocritical considering Bush's campaign was the most targeted military campaign of such a size in history probably, with fewer civs being killed than in a single year by Saddam's regime itself.
Give peace a chance? Friggin bullshit, letting a dictator murder thousands of people for years and years is all they are supporting.
Disclaimer: I'm not a Republican nor did I vote for Bush, but I know an evil dictatorship when I see one... The world is simply a better place with Saddam out of the picture.
End rant. Guess I'm just feeling a bit beliggerent today:)
You have to use Active X -- or whateverthefuck -- to display PNGs with alpha-transparency in IE, and only IE >= 5.5. It also has show-stopping limitations is many situations. I have used this hack on my company's website before, and it is indeed ugly.
I forget what limitations are inherent in this kludge, there's a few pages out there about it that can be found with some googling.
In short, it's definately suitable for everyday usage.
In GTA -- 3 and Vice City -- there is a storyline that unfolds as you complete missions, all of which are completely different, all taking place in a simulation of a city. Throughout the game, many characters are introduced. Some become allies, some eventually become enemies that you have to kill, etc.
Yeah but, people aren't really switching to PNG because IE doesn't support it. The same is true of Ogg, no hardware support.
So, instead of people doing the intelligent thing and switching to something that is unencumbered by patent liability, people stand around with their pants down and get bent over.
Thanks for the info, that's good to know, and I'm glad to hear it as well. Unfortuneately, it seems everyone with moderator points is ignoring your replies...
Then is it just a misconception that Lindows by default runs only as root? Everything I've ever heard about Lindows mentioned that it runs only as root.
The soldiers are NOT a police force, and they are not suited to be used as such. That is why they got former Iraqi police to head up controlling the looting as much as possible.
... you are wrong. It is perfectly possible to run IE on Linux nearly flawlessly using the proper version of wine, I have even done this myself once upon a time.
So, I must say that Linux support IE better than IE supports PNG:)

Yes, a lawyer saying something doesn't make it right, but it does make it an informed legal argument, that's all.
I'm sure someone could make a living out of it.
I wish /. had a full-time lawyer to read over this stuff and offer her opinion, that would be cool.

I agree with you about guns, they don't kill people. But websites don't render frames either, browsers do.

Anyone have any other pros/cons?

It's really quite a complex adventure game.
FWIW, at my company, we are slowly starting to use PNGs for some things, we've been waiting for people to upgrade past IE 4.x to avoid said barfing.
So, instead of people doing the intelligent thing and switching to something that is unencumbered by patent liability, people stand around with their pants down and get bent over.
It sure is painful to watch...
Do you have any more insight into this?
thanks

I prefer having sex with my wife. Please grow up.
