What this means, everyone, is that they knew of the "offending code" for a while without taking any action, and continued in their Linux business, knowingly distributing the offending code themselves.
They have no legal legs to stand on. Hopefully the courts will get this one right, and SCO will become irrelevent.
I really like your book index. I've been thinking of reviewing the books I read, and putting them into a similar index, and now I have to say you've inspired me to "get to it".
Personally, I thought the last Foundation book he wrote, Foundation and Earth, was the best. The ending, which I won't give away, was staggering. Some people say it was lame... I can only guess that they didn't understand it.
He meant to continue where that book left off and conclude the whole story; he knew where he wanted the story to go, but he couldn't figure out exactly how he wanted to do it. I am quite confident that I know what he intended to do, as there is only one logical direction the story could go IMO, but I won't talk about it now as that would spoil the ending of "Foundation and Earth".
Ransom Love is the CEO/owner of SCO/Caldera correct? What is his snail-mail address? I've got a bad of poop I'd like to mail him:)
j/k...
Anyway, to Ransom Love, I have this to say...
Mr. Love, you are a person of very, very poor quality. For years, you ran Caldera, pretending to be a member of the community, the whole time trying to undermine the GPL. Then after acquiring SCO, you immediately got your legal team working on finding a way to force the community to fork over cash. During this time, you promised several times that SCO was not going after Linux. Recently you yourself exposed this lie, now more of your lies have been exposed.
You are a leach, a parasite. You have committed egregious crimes against a community of hundreds of thousands. You are a terribly selfish person.
OK, so Trend issued a ruleset which blocks all mail containing the letter '_' - one and a half hours later, they fixed the _roblem, which is _retty good going IMHO.
I've been using Trend's Deskto_ solution (OfficeScan) at work for just over a year now, with no _roblems at all. Trend have a very good re_utation for u_dating their rulesets very very quickly when a new virus hits the wild - for exam_le in the case of "Love Bug" a cou_le of years back, they had a new _attern file available in less than 45 minutes, where other vendors took 24 to 36 hours.
Since OfficeScan (and AFAIK, all the Trend _roducts) can be configured to automatically u_date their _attern, Engine and Core files whenever a new version becomes available, that effectively means that all deskto_ _C's and Servers can be running with suitable _attern files before you even see any incidence of a new virus.
_eo_le need to get some _ers_ective on this issue - Yes, there was a _roblem, but it's fixed. Trend's _roduct base is very stable, very fast and very effective. One small _roblem like this is just that: small !
Disclaimer: No, I don't work for Trend - I'm just a very ha__y end user
Music is different than videogames. A lot of music, rap especially, is promoting a certain point of view. That point of view is often anti-establishment, anti-cop, pro-womanizing, pro-substance abuse, etc.
They're not playing a game or fantasizing, they're promoting a lifestyle, and telling people what is cool. And many of these rappers do in fact try to live that lifestyle. Some are former drug dealers, game members, etc. Others still are those things...
If you think this doesn't affect kids, you're dreaming... It does, I've seen it.
Never mind that TONS of nuclear materials are missing because we were too busy protecting the oil fields to protect the nuke labs.
It was extremely important to protect the oil fields, to prevent another enviornmental disaster like the first war, far, far worse than the impact of the Exxon Valdez.
It's not as if they knew where nuclear material was being kept, and it would have been impossible to "protect" it, as they hadn't, I mean DUH!, taken over that part of the friggin country yet.
Never mind that our feeble attempts to bring order are just making more enemies in Iraq.
You seem to not understand the volatility of the situation. It's not simple, and will be impossible to please everyone.
Never mind that those nations that supported us are now under attack from Al Queda terrorists.
That's the price you pay. The alternative is to submit to demands of terrorists, which is unacceptable.
Never mind that Saddam got away. Never mind that Bin Laden got away.
Idiot! These countries are big. Baghdad is a huge city, with over 5,000,000 people. You are extremely naive if you think it was even possible to prevent him from getting away. They came close to killing him, even may have, but most likely he got away.
Never mind that this administration has FAILED at every goal they have set for themselves in the war on terror.
Complete, fucking, idioacy. Afghanistan is no longer ruled by the Taliban, the government that al'Queda was a military branch of. Iraq is no longer ruled by Saddam Hussein, a brutal dictator personally responsible for over a million deaths. There has not been a single successful terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.
Al'Queda is not gone, but it has been severely impacted. It's power will continue to crumble, and as more countries support efforts to eliminate them, it will go even quicker. After the ridiculously easy time U.S. forces had removing the Taliban and the Baath party in Iraq, both of which naysayers said would not be possible, beliggerant governments will think twice before opposing the U.S.
Yeah, Mozilla has had a minimum font size option for a long time too. I think it's the best thing since sliced bread, as I am so sick of having to stick my head closer to my monitor just to read some BS "fine print".
Annoyingly, this often throws off the layout of some websites, but that's pretty stupid design if a minor font-size adjustment throws it off... *cough gamespot cough*:)
I disagree with you 100%. They are not forcing this fix upon anyone, it is the existing worm that is going to download and run this uninstaller.
Also, I believe you are overstating the potential for damage by a large degree. Deleting a couple files and registry keys is an extremely simple process, and should pose no danger to any machines. Should the registry get corrupted during the key removal, that would really be the fault of windows, not the program itself, as programs don't directly access the registry.
Could they be taken to court? Sure, but you can take anyone to court for anything. Would they win, probably. Should they win, definately.
And if it's personal liability you're concerned with, why complain? They're only jeopardizing themselves, not you.
Morally, I think it's equivalent to giving CPR to someone who was in an accident. We have good samaritan laws to protect such people these days.
What if there are no police available, or none competent enough to handle the situation.
Besides, the situation is partly your fault in the first place for leaving your front door wide open.
Ok, enough with the analogies.
Is it ever ok to modify someone's computer without their permission? I say no. It's my computer stay out.
But they're not modifying your computer in the first place, the virus is initiating it.
If they had written an exploit that installs itself onto peoples' computers and checks for viruses, etc., then it might be different. But that's not what they did.
Am I just being incredibly dense? What are so many here complaining about? How could you possibly consider it to be morally wrong for someone to use a worm's own properties to fight it? People who are "unintentionally downloading and running" this fix were already hacked, and are no longer in control of their machines.
If someone broke into your house, would you mind if a friendly neighbor quietly quietly followed them in and escorted the intruder out? Or perhaps you'd prefer your neighbor to let the intruder rob you, or whatever they intended to do.
They also didn't "hack" geocities like some have suggested...
Windows NT 4 was the most unstable OS I have ever had the misfortune of having to maintain. Every single service pack for NT4 broke SOMETHING of importance. By the time we ditched NT4, there were still gaping security holes and instability problems that we couldn't patch because it broke too much.
How the fuck am I supposed to buy CDs then? I do not buy CDs that I don't know what the artists are singing about. It's already bad enough that I can only hear one or two songs on the disc before buying it, but now I'm not even allowed to find out what the music is about?
Things I don't like in my music include:
1. too much profanity. profanity doesn't bother me at all, but profanity used in such a way as to not be expressive is just annoying. lots of rap, and lots of metal is like this.
2. simple lyrics. i hate music where the writer couldn't even think about something to write and instead talks about her/himself. 90% of all rap...
3. politicking. i hate self-righteous musicians who espouse all kinds of political opinions, especially when they're big-name artists who have never lived in the real world. and why should i listen to someone's politics if i find it morally repugnant. i should be able to decide before i pay money to listen to something.
4. CDs that don't have the friggin lyrics, or have them in a handwritten type that i can't read. wtf? i'm supposed to pay money for something that i don't even know what it's about?
In short, lyrics are important to me in my music purchasing decisions. If I don't get to see the lyrics, I will buy even less CDs than I do now that I have a hard time listening to stuff before buying it...
Possibly, but being that we don't even understand it enough to even know what we're looking for yet, it is probably a safe bet that it will be a LONG time from now, if ever.
Chances are, if we saw it, we wouldn't even know.
JMO, maybe someone will make a brilliant discovery tomorrow...
You are not understanding what I am saying. Your consciousness still may exist during your periods of physical unconsciousness, how can you know whether it does or not, you have no memory of it. Are your dreams not periods of consciousness? Sure, they may be non-real, but during your dreams you are still aware of your existence, however non-real it may be at the time.
What I am talking about is really self-awareness, or sentience, not physical consciousness as humans know it.
Sorry about the Irish chick though.:) Coming from an Irish family, I know how duplicitous those Irish females can be.:)
You do not and can not know that your consciousness does not exist during certain intervals. You have no memory of those intervals, that is all you do or can know. That has no bearing on whether or not your consciousness existed.
1. consciousness is just an abstraction (like that actually means anything)
2. prove you have a soul (irrelevent)
3. you're just a machine, you dolt! (doesn't explain why he's aware of himself, irrelevent)
4. more along the same vein
Now, I'm not discounting those arguments, just pointing out that they are completely uninformed. What I mean by that is, no one knows anything about souls, consciousness, etc. We understand that our brains are extremely complex information processing machines, but that doesn't help to explain why we are aware of ourselves.
Perhaps there is something we haven't found yet that makes sentient beings sentient, and perhaps not. Perhaps it is a result of something so complex that the human brain is incapable of comprehending it. Perhaps it is something we can't ever physically detect. Perhaps consciousness is something that is pervasive throughout our universe, throughout all matter, and our brains are a physical machine that links a bunch of it together.
My point is simply that we haven't even begun to understand consciousness in any way shape or form. People who say it's a result of a soul, or it doesn't really exist, or is the result of a complex thinking machine, are all deluding themselves. At this point, there is simply no way anyone can seriously speculate about it. We don't even completely understand the ways in which physical matter interacts in our universe, nor whether what we know as physical matter is all there is that is here.
It's beyond us right now, and is likely to remain so for a long time.
5. The level of technology required to create a computer capable of simulating our own minds would take billions or trillions of years to reach.
6. It is impossible for a mind to understand itself well enough to create a simulation of itself.
Wow, this is like people getting paid to masturbate, where do I sign up? Oh. I need to go to an expensive school for that?
*rolls eyes*
They have no legal legs to stand on. Hopefully the courts will get this one right, and SCO will become irrelevent.
Thanks for the inspiration :)
Cheers

I have found my new business model!
I'll skip the whole 1. 2. 3. profit thing...
Mr. Love was always a jerk though, several times he stated his comtempt for the GPL. He was one of those guys who wanted his cake and eat it too.
However, even though I always disliked Mr. Love, I am glad to hear he is not connected to this.
