Plus, imagine having 15 guys sitting around a few tables all wearing headset displays, that would just be so cool. It would look like something from out of Star Trek(or pick your favorite sci-fi).

With prototypes already made, and so many companies planning on using this stuff, it looks like we may finally get to see these in action. Hopefully the cost will be as cheap as they imply.

  3. only truly insightful comment yet on Judge OKs FBI Hack Of Russian Computers · · Score: 3

Seriously, people, grow up. Life is not a big huge conspiracy, what the FBI did was reasonable. They had good reason to suspect these guys, they then set them up and caught them.

Do you really think that they could do this any other way? Of course not, the evidence would most likely disappear before they could get their hands on it, just as the parent poster pointed out.

With that said, there is PLENTY of other things to complain about concerning the FBI. Personally, I would like to see the FBI, NSA, and CIA dissolved and create new organizations for the security of this nation, with input from the public and complete disclosure of how things will work. But please, complain about the things that are worth complaining about, in this case, the FBI was trying to do the right thing.

  6. apparently... on The Superior Motif? · · Score: 2

Motif sucks a fat one. I wouldn't really know, as I've never ever been unfortunate to do any programming with Motif, and have only toyed around with GTK and QT.

As far as ease of use, I didn't find GTK or QT to be too difficult, and I NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER __EVER__ do any GUI programming... ever... Well, except for like 4 or 5 years ago in Java 1.something. They both seemed pretty straight forward to me.

Anyway, what I *DO* know about Motif from experience is that it is the ugliest fucking GUI toolkit I have *EVER* seen. Windows, Mac, GTK/QT blow it away it terms of both look AND feel. Even if you're a hardcore "looks don't matter" geek, the feel is still important, and God Motif is just so awfully disgusting! Then there's the matter of stability...

I have only seen _ONE_ Motif app that is really stable, which would be Nedit BTW(the absolute greatest text editor in the world). Can anyone else think of another stable Motif app?

Why is anyone still using Motif, why is anyone defending it? For the sake of all that is good and pure, throw that wretched thing away! = )

No one can force you to use GPL code, so the virus analogy doesn't really stand up anyway. I guess you could say that the GPL is like a non-communicable virus.

Anyway, that's a pretty ridiculous argument from MS anyway, while you CAN use GPL code (with the limitations the GPL provides), you _CAN'T_ get access to Microsoft code at all. Well, you can if you pay out the ass for it I guess, but you can pay a GPL developer to license their code to you under a different license too.

Anyway, I'm noticing a lot of KDE trolling going on here... It may just be me, I'm not sure, but it really seems to me that a lot of KDE users like to cut on Gnome really badly. I don't see the same thing coming from Gnome users, I wonder why this is, I'm not inferring anything, I'm honestly curious.

In any case, since there seem to be so many people trolling for KDE, I figure I'll just become the first Gnome troll, so, here it goes...

    I like Gnome because...

    1. It's pretty
    2. It's pretty
    3. It's pretty
    4. It works pretty well
    5. Corner panels ROCK!

Things I would really like for Gnome

    1. An icon box type thing exactly like in Enlightenment.
    2. Nautilus, completed... bugs fixed, performance enhanced, theming features complete. Hopefully someone will continue developing it.

Things I absolutely *HATE* about KDE

    1. It's ugly
    2. It's ugly
    3. It's ugly
    4. Let me explain ugly, when I say ugly, I mean that it just doesn't feel right... at all. To me, it just looks/feels like it's trying to be an exact ripoff of windows while at the same time adding eye candy. Now, that's not entirely bad, but it just falls way short. The look and feel is just slightly off which is extremely irritating. The eye candy just doesn't work either. Take a look at Konqueror, it has the UGLIEST interface I've seen since I stopped using motif apps. Look at the buttons, they're hideous! And they way they are dithered when they are inactive, it's God awfully hideous looking!
    5. I *HATE* panels that stretch across the whole bottom/top/side of the screen. I don't need that many buttons, please, corner panels just save so much screen real estate.

To be fair... things I like about KDE.
    1. It works
    2. There are some great apps
    3. Everything is integrated a little better than in Gnome, especially the WM.

Anyway, back on topic... Nautilus was a great step up for Gnome, I really hope development is continued, it really completes the Gnome desktop.
