    You have obviously never heard hi end sound. The difference is not at all subtle. A clue, although you cannot hear above 20,000 Hz the harmonics all the way to 100,000Hz _do_ impact what you hear.

    In general *nix filesytems don't fragment to any great extent. The advantage of a pro level server filesystem is large compared to M$'s standard whore friendly effort. Why fragmentation had to be imported to NTFS is still a mystery, they may not know any better.

    This is largly true but firewire is a stateless hardware connection and USB is client-server. Essential sustained high bandwith apps should prolly try for firewire.

    Umm the Ruskkis have, well are rumored to have, mach 1 rocket propelled topedoes. The Iranians demonstrated some of this tech quite recently. There is work being done for very high speed submarines too.

    Here is the deal with cops they are all the same. They deal with the public all day and are shit on by 90% of the people they deal with.

      Be nice to the cops. Make em' laugh. If you can do this it is very hard for them to do anything nasty to you. It is basic human nature. I have gotten away with amazing stuff just by following this rule.

    Who pissed in your cornflakes? I build my machines for a way better than normal user experience. Nice hardware, careful assembly and configuration make for a "forget the hardware" attitude.

    In the options section of the fstab, add the option 'user' to the mount
    point, e.g.: /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,user,exec,ro 0 0

    Yeah my kid has a HP branded Sony 21, nice monitor but still pretty small compared to this 1920x1080 30" wide beasty. My 60th birthday present to myself ;).

    interesting. My Sony 34XS955 CRT does an amazing job of scaling up SD. A clean cartoon looks to be HD. A reasonable show like The Daily Show look very good. Even my ancient low res music vids look pretty good.

    Hmmm I sure like my new Sony 34" HDTV. Sure plays a mean Quake4 game online, very hard to go back to an itty bitty 19" monitor. Oh and actual HDTV files ... um wow eh'.

    These are almost all gone anyway, The Super Fine Pitch tube only went in a few of Sony's HD CRTs, the XS955s and XBR910 and XBR960. No the XBR970 is unfortunetly not one of these.

      As I said almost all gone could not find one in Canada. I did not pay nearly $600 for shipping because I wanted to ;(.

    Never met an LCD I didn't hate. After looking hard and long I just set up my brand new Sony 34XS955 CRT which took nearly a month to get from NY:NY to BC Canada. An epic battle with at least 3 shipping companies involved and a screw up every few days. About $2000 can total.

      It's just wonderful and no motion crap that all the LCDs do. Plays games ... well 34" of widesreen at 720p is a pretty cool Doom3 and Quake4 experience ;). Yup it'll do 1080i but the 720p seems to work well for games.

    So "make xconfig" in the linux source dir (you will need to be running X) does not give you a GUI to configure your kernel? I guess it's kinda onerous to type "make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install" but if you made it that far it's kinda a badge of accomplishment.

      There is very little bloat. All the kernel modules don't amount to, just a sec, more than 43M. Only the relevent modules are inserted into the kernel so you just have what you need to run your hardware.

    Copying a bunch of config files from one / filesystem to another is hardly grunt work. I was commiserating with the Red Hat user as that dosen't work well in a system that changes it's config locations.

      I can just upgrade my entire slackware system if I want but usually I just do a new install, install everything on modern massive hard drives, and move my configs. Really very simple. I've even copied over my current kernel as I kinda like to roll my own.

    Just give em' a nice linux install, I recomend Slackware, set up KDE or whatever, a couple of user accounts and show em' how to log on.

      That's just the set up. Now you can leave the machines on forever and your poor parents logged in forever. All problems solved.
