should Journalists identify hemselves to the chef before eating at a restaurant under review?
Usually, they do. Why? They get a free, or reduced cost, meal and the best food in the house. That, and restaurant usually begs the local food critic to come through and review because it would draw people in.
This case is different, though. As another poster in this thread stated, they are trying to get people to confess to crimes they may or may not have committed. In a situation like DefCon, you're bound to get a few people talking about real hacks, but you will also get some people who make outrageous claims in order to boost their standing and/or self-esteem.
You're right. One book won't overcome decades of social pressure. But you have to start somewhere, and putting basic math in the terms that the "Clueless" and "Bring It On" type crowds is one way to show that "math isn't...like...so totally hard and pointless."
Your troll-fu is weak, Young Sycraft. You're arguing something we already know, and something that most people will acknowledge - Sun isn't for the hobbyist or the home/small business market.
But saying they don't get press is a misnomer. They do get press - in the publications that matter to their market. You'll find ads and articles for Sun in places like CIO magazine, Infoworld, and Information Week. Tom's Hardware, in the big scheme of things, is great for commodity hardware review, but when you're building a 24/7 datacenter, they are probably the last place to look for information.
And finally, with there being a greater focus on virtualization and data center consolidation, a server that can handle 64 simultaneous threads will go a long way to conserving datacenter floor space, lowering cooling costs, and using less electricity. So it may have a greater upfront cost, but if you factor it out over 10 years, it will pay for itself in lower energy bills for the datacenter.
Well....that's your choice, and you can't let other people intimidate you into changing your position. You have to discuss that with your partners. Some will be comfortable with that...others won't. The problem comes when you have to define "someone who matters." What does that mean? Is that how you would say it to any girls who you were interested in?
I've held the same belief - the wait until you found the right person. I've debated it with a lot of (drunk) people - they aren't impressed with the moral high ground, and each side has some equally stupid arguments. The only good thing that came out of those discussions was a willingness to discuss sexual activity with my girlfriend so we could decide this together.
That's something that you need to talk about with her. You both need to make a decision on whether you want sexual activity in your relationship, with or without intercourse. Maybe she does, and you need to figure that out with her, not try to take a moral high-ground position on slashdot.
While I agree that high IQ teens stop and think about the risks associated with sex, I don't think that is the only thing stopping them from having sex. A lot of it comes down to interpersonal skills, common sense, the crowd you hang out with, the social stigma attached to that particular group, and your attitude towards girls/dating/sex.

Blue Blu-ray
·
· Score: 4, Insightful
Um...in case you haven't been to a consumer electronics store in the last six months, there are more 3rd party Blu-Ray players than there are HD-DVD players total. Unlike Betamax, this isn't a Sony-only product.
I don't know about that. It seems like Blu-Ray is gaining the advantage right now. According to the wikipedia article, Blockbuster has decided to offer blu-ray in most of its stores. Target is giving Blu-ray prominence over HD-DVD. Three of the five major movie studios release on Blu-ray exclusively, with a fourth that releases on both. I think the format war has been settled.
The bigger war is still coming - Blu-ray vs. DVD. Most people won't need, or want, Blu-Ray for a couple of years, especially since the price of a good upconvert DVD player is at least 1/4th of the price of a blu-ray player.
There are other reasons why businesses ignore firefox - application compatibility. There are some things that only work well, or work at all, in Internet Explorer. Heck, there are some things that won't work in IE7 that work fine in IE6.
I'm sure there are a lot of IT people in business that would like to move away from IE to Firefox, but it would just be too damn expensive to redevelop critical software to remove the IE-only components.
Honestly, is Office 2007 that much different from Open Office than Office 20007 is from Office XP?
Having used all three, I would say yes. The differences between Open Office and Office XP aren't that great, but the difference between Office 2007, previous versions of Office, and Open Office are wide. It still does the same things, but the interface is so different that it will require retraining for many users.
If the school plans on upgrading, why not tell the parents they should get the latest? Yeah, it sucks that they are going to a non-free option where the cheapest version is about $150 USD, but guess what - that is what the kids will see in the corporate world by the time they graduate from college.
By the way, Batavia, IL isn't exactly a poor area. I bet most of the families in that Chicago suburb could afford the $150 expense.
1. Character consistency. Neville goes from almost a squib to holding his own against death eaters, where does this come from?
Well...actually, she is consistent. Going back as far as book 5, you can see Neville becoming a capable wizard in his own right. Harry even comments on this after the fight in the Ministry of Magic.
5. Voldemort's incompetence isn't believable. Okay so she wanted Voldemort's flaw to be his arrogance, but he isn't a moron. He knows Harry will come back to Godric's Hollow and yet lays a pathetic trap. He should have at least made it unapparatable. He doesn't exploit the mind link like he previously did to kill Sirius. He also continues to be outsmarted by a 17 year old with no plan. It is like watching a movie where the superweapon has a giant self-destruct button that the hero pushes and the villian doesn't see it coming!
For a pathetic trap, it almost succeeded brilliantly.
So, why allow Slythies?
Because the books also make the point that while some Slythies go bad, not all will. It emphasizes that several Slythies have gone on to become great wizards or do great things.
The Deathly Hallows weren't a McGuffin. To be a McGuffin, they would have had to have no significance on the plot, and yet, on many layers, they were very significant to the plot. We learn that Harry's Cloak relates to his lineage, the Resurrection Stone plays a key role in allowing Harry to defeat Voldemort, and the Wand was instrumental in exploring Dumbledore's backstory and the final defeat of Voldemort.
Understanding Poetry, by Dr. J. Evans Pritchard, Ph.D.
To fully understand poetry, we must first be fluent with its meter, rhyme, and figures of speech. Then ask two questions: One, how artfully has the objective of the poem been rendered, and two, how important is that objective. Question one rates the poem's perfection, question two rates its importance. And once these questions have been answered, determining a poem's greatest becomes a relatively simple matter.
If the poem's score for perfection is plotted along the horizontal of a graph, and its importance is plotted on the vertical, then calculating the total area of the poem yields the measure of its greatness.
/Not serious //Love this movie ///Keating would love Harry Potter if he weren't a movie character
Plot device it may have been, but it was explained rather well in the end. And it added to the mystique that Harry was not only special, but destined to face down Voldemort.
Why thank you, good sir. Thanks to your constant name-dropping of this Ubuntu and it's online forums, I will become a member and download the software. If it wasn't for you, I would have never thought of it.
Are you sure its his exhaustion that makes it difficult for him to summon the lightsaber, and not his lack of training in how to use the force or his inability to concentrate due to his wounds and the cold?

There are other things he can do, thought, that would keep the passion going in their relationship that aren't intercourse.
Hmm...big butts aren't so bad. And missing teeth have their advantages too.
Pregnancy/STD isn't a reason to decline sex - but it is a good reason to talk to your partner before having sex.
Batshit-crazy girls is a reason to decline sex.

As I said above, the reason why they will see it in the corporate world is Excel.
No. One of the main reasons why they will see it in the corporate world is Excel, which there is no alternative too.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think it is a DBZ reference.
Eh...it must be mods-on-crack day for this thread. Someone marked an almost obligatory quote from Armageddon as redundant.
