Managers do set the tone of a company but good managers listen to their employees and are willing to discuss how things are done. I've been working for a large state agency in the US for the past nine years and for four of those years, we had a CIO who only wanted "Yes" men around him.. I bucked enough from it to not be included in that group and gained the rep of a rebel. Then we got a new CIO in who had a completely different approach and I get along great with him. He sees the value of listening to new ideas, incorporating the ones that are viable and the IT Department has been more productive because of that.
Sometimes dedication to a job means sticking with it even when you don't like what is going on. Sometimes it even turns out for the beter.
I personally side with the statement That Blizzard has made in that this subject matter does not belong in the game world. If others are using statements you find offensive, then either report them to Blizzard or (if you feel generous) explain to them why you consider the statement offensive and ask them to stop.
When you enter this virtual world, you are a guest of Blizzard and as such you need to follow the rules they have asked you to abide by. It's then up to Blizzard to equally enforce these rules when the infractions are brought to their attention. If you then find that this is not happening, then Blizzard is being discriminitory (at least in my mind).
You say that you do not have a choice in who you are and I agree with that, but, you do chose to enter their Virtual world and agree to follow their rules. If you cannot agree with that any longer and you have to advertise your sexual orientation, then I suggest that you don't go back. This will at least let them know that you have more character than the other biggots.
Problem with this theory is that the oxide on magnetic tape will degrade withing 3-5 years also. We have tried reloading data from tapes that old and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I always have to clean the drive afterwords though..:-)
How about this. They are trying to make sure that the money they collected from you is actually spent on they thing they collected it for instead of paying for over-priced software package. It also saves you money since you won't have to but this over-priced software package also to read/work with the state documentation.
I would suggest you try downloading Linux again.
I have found it to be about the same amount of effort to load Linux on a machine as I would do for Windows and I have every tool I would need in one shot. I don't have to load Office and a Firewall software, ect.. They are just there and the main stuff works from the start.
If you want to do more than cruise the internet or work on your documents you'll need to tweak it a bit but that is no different than Windows.
I guess it would also be applicable to ask these recruits if they ever played "Make Believe" as a child.
I have enjoyed many a good game of D&D in my life and do not consider myself apt to detach myself from reality or looking to "game" the system to my advantage. I do think that it taught me to think "Out of the Box" and how to Run through scenerios before committing to an action.
By the way, I was in the service for 10 years with a very high Top Secret Security Clearance and received several awards for my "Problem Resolution" skills.

With BlackBerries and e-mail on cell phones, it's not too far fetched that this might be faster than trying to call someone at home.
