I wouldn't count on the N. Koreans somehow dropping their weapons from low morale. NK is much more anal about internal brainwashing than Saddam ever was, and they have been at it far longer. So not only are their soldiers indoctrinated, their father's were similarly indoctrinated, and also their grandfathers. Also, a large part of Iraq's army was Shi'ite, and they were never going to fight for Saddam.

And you have to figure that NK will also do to their soldiers as Stalin did to his, i.e., put an army behind them to encourage them not to run.

Oracle cannot dismiss the damned plugin altogether, they have too much that relies on it, Oracle Forms for one. I'm unsure how that relates to their databases. Yep, it turns out that a lot of military spending mirrors the rest of government spending, it gets sucked up in mandatory spending like pensions for service members, health care, etc. They cannot arbitrarily rewrite contracts either. So the amount they can actually cut gets concentrated on things they can control immediately like training, salaries, etc. That's why the cuts appear out of proportion to the total percentage cuts.

  20. Re:Total BS on How the U.S. Sequester Will Hurt Science and Tech · · Score: 1

That's only because you are looking at the budget as one giant gooey mess. It isn't. They hit discretionary spending, something that isn't driving the debt. They already took a chunk out of DoD last year for 10 years. Now that isn't enough for them. And it is a stupid way to cut spending. Cutting money for things like research and Head Start and NiH is just plain dumb.

And this was never about budget reduction. It was always about Republicans objecting to EPA, NiH, OSHA, Head Start, etc. They simply believe government shouldn't be doing those things. Democrats are just as much to blame since they refuse to touch the real drivers of the debt, entitlements.
